I live in a state where assisted suicide is legal. If I was terminally ill and had a limited amount of time I would like to pick that time.

I saw the movie about jack kevorkian,he said it best where he talked about doctors pulling the plug and the patients lays in bed for days starving to death.

I saw a documentary once about a guy who did assisted suicide. I mean he was sick, and he killed himself. He was a very smart person and made a lot of good points.
People say it's wrong to help people die even if they are sick, because God is supposed to choose when they die. But they don't have a problem having heart surgery or putting their premature baby through surgery to save it's life. This was one of his points.

I remember that big story about terrorist in Scotland who had only 3 MONTHS to live, so he was released... to still be alive now after couple of YEARS...
If this is allowed and if (as in example above) in very serious legal case doctors have clearly shown that they can and will lie on the issue, so many potential abuses arise that any possible benefit is squashed.
As for "poor people who suffer and want to die" - suicide is neither illegal nor prosecutable. Murder is and should always be.

Not being allowed to die when we want tells us that we have no control over our own bodies. Ridiculous.

I dont know about "assisted" suicide as the term is so bland. Eg, a person who has 9 months to live says "I want to die before my problem kills me" and it is taken literally by a relative who kills that person. Is that assisted suicide or assisted murder?
I read a sci-fi book by Heinlein where all patients in a hospital had a "kill switch" beside them. All they had to do was grab it and turn it on to die. That assumes they arent quadriplegics I suppose. In any case, he had the better idea. You dont have to give the guilt of your death to someone who loves you or risk being capped early by someone wanting you not to change your will.
What greatly disgusts me is so-called "religious ethics". They say it is not on to take your life but they are quite happy to have you drag out a life in despair and misery, pain and financial loss just so THEY can feel good about themselves. What deity would demand you die miserably according to these people? I had a much loved dog who had stomach cancer that was inoperable and she was so sick she stopped eating. I held her while the vet put her down, telling her I loved her the whole time. Many people have similar stories. Why is it that when it comes to euthanasia, we think more kindly of our pets than our fathers, mothers, sons or daughters?
We should be ashamed that we let a vocal minority of religious zealots control the rights of the majority.
I wonder how many clerics of any particular religious creed call out to their deity asking that being to take them now rather than let them suffer as they are dying of some sickness that robs them of even their dignity after taking their houses and financial well being of the survivors? I wonder if, at those times they find that there ARE no terminally ill against euthanasia the same as their are no atheists in trenches in war? Personally, I think there is a hot little circle of Hell for those who wish the majority to suffer so they can pride themselves on sticking their noses where it had no right to be.

less than a year to live...like the way the lockerbie bomber had only a few months to live when they let him go? and you'd think they would have put a lot of thought into it since they knew a lot of people were paying attention to that.

If a person is at the point where they're willing to kill themselves to end their suffering, I'm sure they'll find a way.
Just let them choose a humane way to end their lives instead of whining about how "God should decide." That argument (much like the argument against contraception blocking God's plan or whatever) makes people sound as though they doubt the power of their own god. If he's all powerful and wants something, why are you telling me I can somehow mess that up?
I don't wish that anybody should have a miserable, life ending disease, but it happens and I don't see nobility in telling them to suck it up and suffer any longer than is necessary. What is great about making a person sit through the process of rotting? Not only that, but knowing how it affects your family as they watch you wither, how they're paying emotionally, financially and likely physically (though hospice may do much of the work) for you to be here when you don't want to be.
No matter, I'm proud that our state (Washington) allows people some control of their deaths. Definitely one of the things I'll always remember voting for specifically. <3

If I was terminally ill with less than a year, I'd throw a big party with family and friends for no reason, then disappear 1-3 days later. Sorta like the family pet that runs away to die. Just start walking west til I drop and return to the earth.

Who's to say for sure these people would die naturally within a year? There have been cases of people who were supposed to die within 6 months who then survived for 20 or more years to lead relatively normal lives.

So who says when a person has less than a year to live? ?? I'm guessing God will file that report, because otherwise, there's no way to know someone has only a year to live!! And I'm a doctor! lolComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
