Probably started by one idiot making unsafe lane changes and perpetuated by gawkers who feel the need to slow down to 5 MPH to look at what's going onComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
EwartCoveyAug 23, 2010
Or, I mean, it could be the construction the article talks about.
shadicAug 23, 2010
Okay fine, the construction combined with idiot gawkers who stop to look at people digging up asphalt.
grumpyrainAug 24, 2010
To be fair, it is pretty interesting

That's what they get for leaving the factory.
(Probably was one moron trying to push the person in front of them down the freeway to gain a 1-car distance advantage while texting.)
dudestuffAug 23, 2010
but wait... none of the factory workers in china can legally drive!

remeloxAug 24, 2010
The cake is a lie.
ju66l3rAug 23, 2010
From 60 miles away, you'd think there'd be an alternate route you could try instead of getting into line with everyone else.
testiculeseAug 23, 2010
It's China. That's their M.O.
ontainAug 23, 2010
the alternate route would be dirt roads or by river.
mdellingAug 23, 2010
Maybe they could find it if they had google maps.
angelbunnyAug 23, 2010
If you look at maps.google.com it is yellow with rare spots of red. In other words, even if the jam is going 24/7 it is still moving at a nice pace. LA traffic can be worse..
wanderonAug 24, 2010
there is another route but it requires them to pay tolls so people said f**k it we'll ride this road out
dustin00Aug 23, 2010
No end in sight??? The article points out construction will be completed Sept 13.

breakspiritAug 23, 2010
Dude whining about the price gouging on the noodles needs to realize that he's paying for the convenience. Sounds like those vendors are very smart.
warcinAug 23, 2010
This is China. They don't believe in capitalism...
jackopforAug 23, 2010
I doubt having a roadside concert as suggested by one of the drivers will help relieve any congestion on the highways.
korvan504521Aug 23, 2010
to be accurate, he was interested in relieving homesickness rather than congestion.
Closed AccountAug 23, 2010
Surething, just make it a Nickeback concert.
People would be gone in a second.
jackopforAug 23, 2010
@korvan good point. I do see a market for RV's and motorhomes in China considering the cramped living conditions and horrible congestion.
pyroglassAug 23, 2010
one piece of information i would like to know is what is the average speed of the drivers in this stretch? Hell, it sounds like it takes 9 days to drive 60 miles.
russ3Aug 23, 2010
they did say they play chess games, i got the impression everyone was prety much parked there
pyroglassAug 23, 2010
yeah, but you have to think people must be driving too/from work. why bother? call up and say 'Hey, I'm going to be about 9 days late, that cool?'
ontainAug 23, 2010
ppl don't take this road for daily work. most ppl bike for that.
this is an interstate so it's mostly commercial and ppl traveling.
fraggalAug 23, 2010
.27777778 miles per hour

flashingcurserAug 23, 2010

factsahoyAug 23, 2010
With all the supposedly illegal flights going on now, that shouldn't matter.

never place complex technology into the hands of societies and cultures ill-equipped to utilize or maintain them.
aiinokkieAug 23, 2010
rofl how is a road and cars "complex technology"? We're talking about a thousands of year old culture that built the great wall.
cpmccarronAug 23, 2010
Hopefully not as many die in this road construction as in that contruction.
obsidian743Aug 23, 2010
When I first read this I read it as literally a 9 day traffic jam where they're sitting in their cars for 9 days thinking that's impossible. After reading the article it's still not clear if that's what it means or not!
Reminds me of a Dr.Who episode where they're stuck in an infinite traffic loop underground and everyone above is dead!
potherAug 23, 2010
Exactly what it reminded me of too.
That was "Gridlock", 3rd ep. of the 3rd new season with the 10th Doctor and Martha Jones.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gridlock_%28Doctor_Who%29
baloobbearAug 23, 2010
I did a little digging through other news articles on this story and found that the average commute for these drivers during those 9 days was 3 days. Some articles are saying that the traffic is getting back to normal levels now. Still, 3 days to travel 62 miles... that's about 1 mile per hour. Yikes! I'm thinking walking might be a serious consideration.
angelbunnyAug 23, 2010
checking maps.google.com right now it is yellow in most spots. In other words, even if it is jammed 24/7 right now, it is still moving.
vaelkarAug 23, 2010
Should see the traffic during rush hour in Arlington, VA. 60+ mile congestion on Fridays..
atdiwAug 23, 2010
Never spent nine days in a traffic jam? THEN YOU DON'T KNOW s**t ABOUT VIDEO GAMES!
ryanwbAug 23, 2010
Quick, they need to send a film crew out there, this is great stock footage for a zombie or biological attack movie.... the mass exodus out of the city scene
ultraseamusAug 23, 2010
Nothing says apocalypse like roadside vendors selling instant noodles, and drivers playing cards.
hurricanedcAug 24, 2010
That's because in China all they were told was "a threat to the nation's well-being has been discovered." The Chinese government, in an attempt to quell panic, actually helped start the Great Zombie War. People who thought it may have been a tsunami threat or similar were taken by surprise, off their guards when the undead began to meander through the congested parking lot that was the Beijing Expressway.
let's finish this novel!

There is a single picture on this site, http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2010-08/23/c_13457295.htm
Not really sure why the traffic is single-lane though close to the photographer.
lantzaAug 23, 2010
Makes me feel a little better about the 7 hours it took me to get from southern Vermont to Brooklyn after a wedding this weekend.
stonerrobotAug 23, 2010
Evacuation from Houston during Rita caused some serious traffic jams.. 100-mile long traffic jam from Houston to Austin.. what would normally take 2.5-3hrs for 180 miles was now a 32hr trip. I cant imagine 9 days in the car, moving at a snails pace.
frequeniquityAug 23, 2010
I was so there. I had a 24 hr ride to Dallas for a hurricane that didn't really affect us. On the plus side I had an exam on that Thursday and it was cancelled with no need for a make up.
jshhmrAug 23, 2010
We love having hurricane evacuees here in DFW. I was hanging out at Flying Saucer during Rita and a couple of carloads of people showed up from Houston. Everybody at the bar bought them pints the entire night.
jwong8Aug 23, 2010
it makes me feel alot better about the 9 hour trip (normally it would take only 5 hours) from vegas to LA that i made last night
factsahoyAug 23, 2010
It hasn't taken five hours in 10 years, thanks to the assh**ES BLOCKING THE LEFT LANE on the 15.
WTF is up with a two-lane highway through a DESERT? And why is there no high-speed train between L.A. and Vegas?
maddprofAug 24, 2010
Flights to-from Vegas from most of the surrounding major cities are incredibly cheap, that's why there is no train (yet).
invictus125Aug 23, 2010
Just reading about this makes me want to yell and flip people off...
mdellingAug 23, 2010

rrifeAug 23, 2010
What dumb ass would pull on to the road knowing that traffic is backed up that bad.....like the last guy in the line of cars need to be slapped up side the head.
smackydoodleAug 23, 2010
That's ridiculous. What a waste of life time.
theskunkmonkeyAug 23, 2010
60 miles of gridlock? That's nothing, the Washington Beltway is 69 miles of gridlock every day!
In my years driving the roads of Washington DC as a courier, I've narrowed down the 4 worst drivers on the road.
#4 Old People. Come on pops, I know you like your independence and all, but stay out of the fast lane!
#3 Asians. Sorry, I'm not a racist but it's true. I don't know why, but that's just the way it is.
#2 Women. I see so many women doing stupid s**t while driving. Putting on makeup, texting, or just yapping away with a passenger.
#1. Old Asian Women. Seriously, WTF?! I can't even begin to count how many times I have fought through traffic to get past that one car that seems to be holding everyone up and it's always an elderly Asian woman.
oninboninAug 23, 2010
lol I just moved from DC and you are correct.
kevin11atvtAug 23, 2010
an old Asian women totaled my car a week after I moved to Northern VA. 72 years old....
hurricanedcAug 24, 2010
Yep, nearly got run over by an Asian lady in the parking lot of the Gaithersburg MVA.
My favorite part about the Beltway is how you can have a traffic jam at any random time on any random day. 4PM on a Saturday? Hmm how about a traffic jam between College Park and Silver Spring? 2AM on a Sunday? Woop, jam between Oxon Hill and Alexandria.
lousirAug 23, 2010
This was anticipated in 1979 in a short story in Omni Magazine called the Great Moveway Jam. It last years and there was no way to clear it out so the government paved over the people and the cars. http://krewedukat.com/GreatMoveWayJam/great_moveway_jam.htm

igotalottastuffAug 24, 2010
Those guys in traffic should call Domino's ASAP to get the over 30min free pizza.
fresswolfAug 24, 2010
That's why cars suck. They just don't fit for daily transportation of an individual.
Besides, how comes that traffic managers always talk about the insufficient traffic capacity of roads instead of realizing that there are way too many cars and trucks in general
