Oh please, as if one can ever be "prepared" for a disaster. The recent volcano in Iceland, earthquake in Haiti, current floods all over Europe and some other countries including Pakistan... Katarina hurricane. The oil spill in Mexico gulf, after all. As if they were all well-prepared for the misfortune.

You can have building codes to radically reduce the damage during an earthquake or hurricane. City planning can ensure homes aren't built on floodplains to reduce property damage and fatalities. Proper evacuation plans would have saved lives in Katrina. There were few deaths from earthquake in Chile.
So yes, you can be prepared for disaster, it just doesn't make the news when you do.

Unfortunately it's going to take prolonged rain and/or snow. An article I saw a few days ago said that in places the fire is burning deep underground in areas rich with peat. It's virtually impossible to track them down and put them out without a sustained soaking that gets the top few feet of ground soaked. And unless they get every last smoldering ember then when they leave an area it won't take long for a fire to kick up again... So about the only thing they can do is contain it as best as they can until winter when the cold weather will slow it down and the eventual snow will smother it.

Wildfires are a good thing ecologically, they clear away the undergrowth and weaker plants to make room and resources more readily available for the stronger plants.

They also lessen the future fire risks as well as reduce the volume of fuel available. That may not seem very comforting right now but living near some fire zones in the LA area I've learned that you take whatever breaks you can get from nature. Like, it beats being in a hurricane zone where each year the storms can easily be as bad or worse than the previous one.

As one who now lives in a Hurricane zone I have learned that one must make preparations to deal with what can happen. Food stores, water, generators etc.
To deal with forest fires one must control burn near critical locations and keep other critical areas clear such as power line ROW's so the lines don't get cooked...

I bet the articles doesnt mention how in Soviet Russia all villages had firemen, forest rangers, ponds and lakes (that have been manually dried out) And fires did happen before in those very same villages and they have been put out because forest rangers were there to warn people, firemen were there to do their job and local people had lakes and ponds to help to put the fire out before it would spread and wipe out the whole villages. In Soviet Russia everyone had a job, now the country is rotting despite what you see or hear on TV, Digg or whatever. And the government is to blame. All these mother f**kers who robbed the country should be lined up like in revolution and shot.
