Some people really like making charts.
icegoddess13Jul 24, 2010
I honestly thought this was going to be about McDonald's.
killerahJul 24, 2010
And on second glance I realized that it was about McDonald's!

The Euro isn't overvalued, McDonald's is just really f**king expensive in Europe. Plenty of cheaper alternatives available though.
8ballismJul 24, 2010
Kebabs.
bdbrJul 24, 2010
I agree that McDonald's is overpriced in Europe, but from what I've experienced, groceries and restaurants are generally more expensive than the US as well.

I think brand equity needs to be factored in since that varies by region too.

And oddly enough, happier countries tend to charge more for your Big Mac.
Hm...bear with me.
1. Happy countries are healthy.
2. Big Macs are unhealthy.
3. Subsidized Big Macs lower the price of Big Macs.
4. More people buy Big Macs.
5. More people unhealthy.
Ergo, Subsidized Big Macs make countries unhappy.
(I know, this is kind of full of s**t...Big Macs aren't that bad for you).
rudegarJul 24, 2010
no it's the fries and the soda that really kill you
lagstarJul 24, 2010
I could go for a Big Mac right about now!
idontevenJul 24, 2010
The actual cost of a Big Mac in Europe is $1.25, the additional $3.08 is taxes.
cyberdorkJul 24, 2010
Forgot the /s
It's more like $3.63 plus 19% VAT
Just like in many US states you pay $3.73 + 9% VAT

Compare to Europe, Us dole out a lot more in subsidies to beef and US farmer are allowed to use growth hormone but not in Europe.
tsk05Jul 24, 2010
I am pretty sure McDonalds uses the same beef patties everywhere, or mostly everywhere. But if you have evidence to support your claims, go ahead and list them.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rudegarJul 24, 2010
no here they make a big deal about claiming to use local beef and not imported (here being Europe)
of cause they also claim it's lean minced meat though tests showed it was 30% fat where normal lean minced meat here is 8% fat
tsk05Jul 24, 2010
Oh, that's interesting, thanks for the info.
How about the "no growth hormone in Europe but growth hormone in the US," any truth to that?
cyberdorkJul 24, 2010
The internet says:
"On January 1, 1989 the European Economic Community (EEC) placed a ban on hormone-treated U. S. meat, preventing U. S. meat products from being sold in any European nations [wrong, only EEC member countries]. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has challenged the ban and accused the EEC of unfair trade practices"
tsk05Jul 24, 2010
Looks like I was wholly wrong. Thanks for the info
wonderchemistJul 24, 2010
What about a Royale with cheese?
gsm54321Jul 24, 2010
Big mac index is cute, but if you want to understand PPP you need to use a basket of goods.
Thus I recommend adding fries and a drink.

An NPR show recently talked about malnutrition in kids amongst the US poor, and pointed out how milk costs almost three times more than soda... That's messed up. This poor mother had to go easy on the vegetables because they'd take a much bigger chunk out of the food budget than meat — and here we are, subsidizing meat, and not veggies. That's messed up.
And here we're telling the poor it's their own damn fault for not pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and picking the gold up off the streets. That's messed up. America is the only country in the world where the poor hate themselves. Like Kurt Vonnegut Jr. said, it's not a crime to be poor — but it might as well be.
(A+ for Norway. They also subsidize milk, those damn ungodly heathen socialist commie bastards! /s)
