I call bulls**t. I want some sources on this.
To say that low level rioting continues unabated in NI is one thing, to say that its done in meetups organized via cell phone is another.
Somehow I doubt that this woman http://www.globalpost.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/user_thumb/Carrie_Porter.png actually bothered to talk to anyone other than the dude behind the 8 foot wall.
elnickoJul 26, 2010
Some happened up the road from me, I asked some of them (none over 18.. all around 16-15) why they were doing it in their own area, one said for the fun of it and another said to try and lure the tigers bay ones down here so they could fight..

god that beats recreational digg trolling.

CptBuck, it's a well known fact in NI that the riots are organised. It doesn't just happen out of thin air.
For example, the riots in Broadway (in West Belfast) were organised by dissident republicans in order to test out police response times. Yeah, it's just kids doing the rioting, but 99/100 there's someone on the ground overseeing things.
http://oconallstreet.com/2010/05/24/schools-community-relations-budget-slashed-by-minister-for-education-assembly-debate-today/
You know what helps prevent some kids getting involved in the rioting? Cross community projects or just youth schemes that provide something to DO. It's boredom as much as it's sectarianism. I've worked with a few projects and it's amazing to see the transformation. However, you know damn well that it's the bad bits that will be reported internationally and not the success stories. So much so that the education Minister slashed the community relations budget, and hundreds of projects in these interface areas will have to shut down or scale down.

I think they need grain alcohol for some riot punch!
urbanguerillaJul 26, 2010
The situation in Ireland was always destined to end up back at square one. All the paramilitary groups splintered off into regional and local units, basically just gangs, controlling the drugs, sex and protection rackets. The UK and Irish Government had a real chance to sever a new generation from their violent past, but as usual the settled for the quick fix, pushed for the cease-fire and did f**k all with it once they got it.
rossbywavesJul 26, 2010
"The situation in Ireland was always destined to end up back at square one."
We're not BACK at square one or anywhere near it. That's absolute rubbish. Things have come so far in the past 15 years and things will never return to the situation we had during the Troubles.
You want to sever a new generation from their violent past? You address the causes of that violent past. Cross community projects help to reduce sectarianism and investment in local areas provides jobs, facilities etc. It's a slow process, but it's working and it will continue to work despite the massive school community relations cuts. I know from first hand experience and from anecdotal evidence that the idiots who used to be throwing bricks at the police are the ones stopping the kids from doing the same.
stavrosianJul 26, 2010
Seriously dugg. If anybody thinks the situation in NI is even *close* to being what it was back in those times, they need their head examined.
urbanguerillaJul 26, 2010
I hope your right mate, I really do. But the young men who are out now throwing bricks and petrol bombs and hijacking trains have been sitting around listening to their elders talking about how they did this and that in the bad old days when the troops were out in force and it's almost as if they feel they're missing out by not doing it. It's not exactly back at square one yet but what happens once the police get heavy handed and some boys end up dead, or if the troops are called in and end up pulling another Bloody Sunday.
rossbywavesJul 26, 2010
"It's not exactly back at square one yet.."
it is nowhere near "square one" and it never will be anywhere near "square one", and to say anything along those lines is just scaremongering of Daily Mail proportions. Dissident republicans are a minority of a minority of a minority. I'm not going to go through the last 50 years of Irish history with you but there were plenty of reasons why rioting and hijackings and all that rubbish was attractive to people in both communities, and all but two of those reasons have disappeared.
"what happens once the police get heavy handed.."
The PSNI will not get heavy handed. I'm a member of the nationalist community and I would give the vast majority of them medals for the way they acted during the Ardoyne (where there are a number of community flashpoints) riots. They were even-handed and took a lot of flak, with gunshots being fired at them and breeze blocks being dropped from buildings. Their vans were attacked with golf clubs and certain rioters were intent on murder, and the police dealt with the matter without using deadly force. The police have learned from the past and will not get heavy handed. They're well aware of how the martyrs are created.
As to the suggestion of getting the troops in? The British troops? Not a chance. One, they're overstretched as it is due to the whole fighting two major wars thing. Second, there's absolutely no need for them and troops on the ground would antagonise community relations.
johnfluxJul 26, 2010
Yeah we're back to having busses being routinely blown up.. on wait. Shut the f**k up.
roy5000x2Jul 26, 2010
So what are you up to this weekend mate?
Eh not much. Just kicking it around. You?
Well Bill and I thought it'd be kinda fun if we went out and threw a few molotov c**ktails around. You in?

Perhaps us pacified americans can learn a thing or two from this.
gunforhireukJul 26, 2010
No. No.
"Recreational" or not, these idiots are destorying their own communities, costing millions of pounds in damages and police costs and injuring themselves and police officers.
Seriously, get a grip.
RobMc1991Jul 26, 2010
Recreational rioting? Am I reading that wrong?
gunforhireukJul 26, 2010
Sadly not, no.
