Iowa in the news - too bad it ain't good :(
martalliAug 12, 2010
Maybe the good news is that there is so little loss of life and the authorities are dealing with it in a competent fashion. Other parts of the country could learn from the upper Midwest.
treehugger87Aug 12, 2010
I wonder why god is so pissed at Iowa?

visionviperAug 12, 2010
CLEARLY this is retribution for Iowa allowing gays to marry!
darkreddragonAug 12, 2010
I wounder what John McCain would do if he was president right now...
treehugger87Aug 12, 2010
If HE were here, he'd consume the Iowans with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse.
matzahmanAug 12, 2010
WTF is with all of the disasters this year. Wildfires in Russia. Oil Spills in the Gulf. Flooding in Pakistan, China, and Iowa.
jerryd71Aug 12, 2010
It must be her time of the decade.
matzahmanAug 12, 2010
I thought her time is in 2 years?
stubearAug 12, 2010
It's this little thing called Global Climate Change. maybe you've heard of it? Unless we can figure out how to reverse our impact on the planet these disasters will only get worse.
matzahmanAug 12, 2010
Climate Change doesn't cause earthquakes and oil spills.
bluto36Aug 12, 2010
how many times did you watch al gore say this?
treehugger87Aug 12, 2010
Google "isostatic rebound" to see how global climate change can lead to an increase in earthquakes and volcanic activity.
And the oil spill would not have happened if we were focused on creating a country dependent on renewable energy instead of oil and had long ago given up on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
martalliAug 16, 2010
Hey, I am all for believing in climate change, but anyone who points to one or twenty freak storm events in the Midwest as proof of climate change or maybe God's wrath hasn't lived here very much. The weather in the Midwest is positively unpredictable hour by hour, day by day, and season by season. Its constantly changing, and the storms can be incredible. So, maybe there is climate change, but it is far too gradual to overwhelm the positively capricous Midwestern weather.

It happens here all the time.
tkeajaxAug 12, 2010
Didn't Iowa already lose a lake to flooding this spring.?
professorriffsAug 12, 2010
Yeah plus we had massive flooding a couple years ago.
Closed AccountAug 12, 2010
Iowa has been getting f**ked this year. Every time we have even a moderate storm in Minneapolis, look at the radar and there's a f**king derecho (which are the worst type of storm outside of hurricanes) plowing through Iowa. They've lost dams, probably have overwatered crops, and are constantly on the verge of massive widespread floods.
This is the most water the midwest has gotten in decades, and we're not prepared for it. Uptown Minneapolis got flooded waist high the other night, Roseville (immediately north of St. Paul) was belly button high from the same storm. Cars were floating away.
Any person who pays more than the least amount of attention to weather patterns knows this is freaky s**t. This isn't even typical of a freak year, this is something big...

"Every time we have even a moderate storm in Minneapolis, look at the radar and there's a f**king derecho (which are the worst type of storm outside of hurricanes) plowing through Iowa."
I'm on the border. We had a derecho about a year ago and it was a nasty mess. Some people had power out for weeks. Some stores had to close for a week or more.
Still, this seems similar to the weather I remember from my childhood here in the 70's...it seems like we had more tornadoes in the 70's though.
kopo27Aug 12, 2010
you are obviously not from mn. i live near the u of m and in uptown. we had zero flooding that was waist high. roseville was not flooded either. you're overly dramatic rants are annoying and false. if anyone cares to know what the weather is like in mn check kare11.com. no flooding waist high here, sorry ftc08 is a liar. dugg down for sure. Yeah. My icon, comment history with insights into Minnesota Politics, and close attention to the climate.
The floods didn't last for days. We have a top notch sewer system because of the melting in spring, but the water was at one point waist high in low spots and on roads. 35 and 36 in Roseville flood a lot, and parts of uptown close to Calhoun are frequent flooders. It's not going to be the top story on the news because it happens at least twice a year.
Thanks for calling me a liar, assh**e.

show me an article that says there was waist high floods in minneapolis or roseville.
Closed AccountAug 12, 2010
Dude, it happens literally all the time. When you get close to Calhoun the water table is literally inches below your feet. There's a spot on the Calhoun parkway that 'floods' on dry days. That spot on 35/36 that floods is literally the lowest point in town besides along the Mississippi.
Why the f**k are you so adamant about this? It was a flood, it happens all the time. Minneapolis has a very high water table, and a very capable drainage system because of it. The amount of water we get in a year would basically put any American city south of 41 degrees under water (and no I can't back that claim up with as much evidence as you seem to require). I lived near a spot that got 8 foot deep puddles monthly. Taft Park in Richfield, close to the new Target by the Airport. It's not that uncommon.

It takes at least a foot of water to get a car floating

As if living in Iowa didn't suck enough already...
martalliAug 12, 2010
I wish I was back in Iowa, personally. Good people, decent government (think Illinois)...
professorriffsAug 12, 2010
I'm from Iowa, and moved to Chicago for 3 years. It basically sucked. Very glad to be back where life is easy and people aren't total bastards 24/7.
jander86Aug 12, 2010
Life is only as good as good as you make it. It can suck and rock anywhere.
moethelawnAug 12, 2010
I currently live in Ames. We have 8 water main breaks and the water station was shut down. We still have water, just not as much and it's dirty. Yay for having to boil water
ubitendoAug 12, 2010
Wow, third natural disaster I've read about this week.
invictus125Aug 12, 2010
Ames, IA got rocked by all these storms. Not only did half the town flood, but a water main blew and now they don't have any drinkable tap water for a week (estimated). I drove through Iowa on Sunday night on my way to Omaha from Ames during the storm (about 12:00-3:00AM). It was the worst thunderstorm I've ever seen. 60mph gusts, torrential rain, almost zero visibility, and a shocking amount of lightning (pardon the pun). I even saw green lightning for the first time ever. That was kind of cool.

invictus125Aug 12, 2010
Whoops, just noticed they mentioned Ames in the article. My bad.
lookbehinduAug 12, 2010
actually 6 water mains broke; i live in ames and this whole boil ban thing is weird. I have full running water but its contaminated so i'm suppose to boil it to make it safe. the annoying part is the water has an oily residue and small particles of junk in it, so even after boiling it im a little hesitant to drink it.
thesha1Aug 12, 2010
Yeah...I can't bring myself to drink boiled water, and I definitely don't want to shower in it. THIS SUCKS.
invictus125Aug 13, 2010
That's pretty nasty. I wouldn't be able to drink it. Hopefully they get that s**t fixed before everyone starts moving up for fall semester.
On a side note, I glanced at your profile (more specifically, your e-mail) and I think I know you. My name's Ryan D. Ring any bells?
martalliAug 16, 2010
thesha1 - If you let the boiled water cool a bit, it isn't so bad. I wonder why you wouldn't shower in it. Don't you ever go swimming in the rivers?
stavrogin2Aug 12, 2010
I wonder if this is the year that will convince Americans that climate change is real.

Why the f**k are you so serious about this. Are you a Digg Patriot (who have me on their s**tlist)?
ultramagnus0001Aug 12, 2010
Hmmmm...Lots of flooding and giant icebergs lately.

This is always terrible.
In Slovakia are similar natural tragedy like this every year. For people living in these areas, it is disheartening, especially when they lose their relatives. That happened this year in May.

I grew up in ames.

jander86Aug 12, 2010
I couldn't even get out of town yesterday to drive to work. Every road was closed, so I just sat around drinking tap water until I found out (too late) that it was contaminated. I just thought my roommate kept forgetting to flush the toilet.
The closest thing to water any store had was Gatorade Propel, I brushed my teeth with it this morning.
lookbehinduAug 12, 2010
today both hyvee's are stuff full of water, so if you haven't got some go ahead and go snag it. i just got my first and hopefully only 24 pack of water about an hour ago from the east hyvee.
jander86Aug 13, 2010
I half expected you to actually be behind me right now. (Since apparently we're both in Ames)
airwalkeAug 12, 2010
It's been crazy wet this summer, I think we're about 18 inches above our year-to-date average of 22 inches, and we have more storms to look forward to tonight and tomorrow that could possibly double that average. I feel sorry for Ames.. this is the 2nd major flood they've had in two years, although 2008 was nothing compared to this... although 1993 had about 14 feet of water in Hilton Coliseum compared to this year's 10.
Iowa's just been a messed-up state to live in the past couple of years weather-wise. Record cold temps and snowfall during the winter, record rain and massive flooding within the span of two years.
thesha1Aug 12, 2010
It seems like every season it gets more severe. I don't even want to THINK about what this winter is going to be like.
thesha1Aug 12, 2010
I live in Ames. It pretty much feels like the apocalypse here...only a few roads are still closed, but everywhere you look it looks like we're living in the bayou. Water is expected to be contaminated until at least next Tuesday. At the grocery store, when they ran out of bottled water, I knew before I even went in the store when every person was coming out with cases of Gatorade instead..hah.
wwwoodyAug 12, 2010
I'm from Des Moines. They ran out of closed road signs a few days ago :\
thesha1Aug 12, 2010
Same in Ames..they had to start using CyRide buses as barricades instead.
jordansampsonAug 13, 2010
This had the potential to be the best Typo ever.
