Farewell to a Cape Town landmark. One thing I will not miss is the smell. Cooling towers (when in use) smell manky!
McDuffman69Aug 26, 2010
Its actually the sewage plant on the opposite side of the highway that causes the smell...
jeremiahjwAug 24, 2010
I heard about this the other day, was disappointed I wasn't able to see it in person, but then I found out it was in South Africa. :-P
adeelarshad82Aug 24, 2010
oh damn!
casspaAug 24, 2010
Demolition is a job I'll always envy, perhaps the manliest of jobs.
armstrong3Aug 26, 2010
you had to say it...now here comes the overwhelming amount of Discovery channel reality shows.
slipperyottterAug 27, 2010
"this thursday, prepare for discovery channel's all new series: bringing down the house. starring this guy *snap shot of middle aged biker dude whose nicknamed after something made out of medal, even though noone on the show ever calls him that. infact, the only person who ever calls him by his nickname is himself when he's saying stuff like, "don't mess with the girder" or, "you're in girder country!"* and his family, who are bunch of whiny bitches!"

synapticlightAug 25, 2010

synapticlightAug 25, 2010
when I filmed this, I could feel the tremble from the explosion, and was very grateful that the wind was blowing the other way, otherwise there would have been a mad scramble off the roof - lol
raumschiffAug 25, 2010
When guys watch demolition live, they scream like girls seeing their favorite Twilight characters live.
liltbrockieAug 26, 2010
Wish someone would demolish this new digg
belthizeAug 26, 2010
I "green, vertically directed arrow"ed you up, was going to say pretty much the same thing.
liltbrockieAug 26, 2010
I'm definitely not going to red arrow you down for that comment

You've been green arrowed up for your loyalty.

These demolitions are actually pretty impressive.

That's pretty darned badass

NEW DIGG NICKELBACKS!
wf80diditAug 26, 2010
Reminds me of the way the WTC Towers fell. Straight down, with no resistance into it's own footprint.
vbullingerAug 26, 2010
Hey! This is nothing like what happened with the WTC towers and building seven! They weren't taken down by controlled demolition: they fell down magically! NIST told me so!
oriondrAug 26, 2010
Weird, it's almost as if large structures collapsing look superficially similar to the untrained conspiracy theorists eye whether their load bearing substructure is put under enormous pressure from demolition explosives or large passenger planes crash into them.
wf80diditAug 26, 2010
A plane never hit building #7.
speedsteamboatAug 26, 2010
@wf80didit: Yeah, it ONLY had a massive piece of a sky scrape fall on top of it after burning uncontrolled for several hours! Clearly its collapse was an orchestrated conspiracy!!1 /sComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
vbullingerAug 26, 2010
There were seven buildings in the WTC complex. Building seven was not adjacent to the twin towers. There was another WTC building between building seven and the twin towers. It was damaged much, much, MUCH worse than building seven. Yet somehow, miraculously, it didn't fall down! Building seven had literally one tenth the damage of it, yet it neatly fell into its own footprint at free fall speed. The other building was nearly split in two, and it didn't fall. Almost nothing of the outer shell of the other building was left.
Demolitions experts from around the world said that, for sure, building seven was taken down by controlled demolition.
There's video where you can hear the actual COUNT DOWN of when building seven was imploded.
The BBC reported that building seven fell TWENTY MINUTES BEFORE IT ACTUALLY FELL.
You can dismiss truth as "conspiracy theory" if it helps you sleep at night and get a few extra diggs, but it doesn't make you right. People who were running around Germany in the 1930's talking about how the Nazis were building concentration camps - including people that escaped from them and ran back to their neighborhoods to tell everyone - were dismissed as conspiracy theorists, too. The FBI claimed La Cosa Nostra didn't exist for decades, calling it a "conspiracy theory." Let's see, what else... Cointelpro... MKULTRA... there are plenty of things that were called "conspiracy theories" that eventually were admitted and become "common knowledge."
speedsteamboatAug 26, 2010
Actually, these cooling towers fell very unevenly. Did you watch the video? I guess that's because that had a tiny fraction of the mass the Twin Towers did. I'm wondering what sort of structure you believe the WTC had that would provide any meaningful resistance to 30+ stories of concrete and steal structure filled with entire office buildings worth of s**t all falling straight downward.
Learn some basic physics. Once that much mass gets moving the only thing that's likely to stop it is the ground.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
individual8Aug 26, 2010
The Vimeo one is an instant fave. Nicely composed.
leepiiAug 26, 2010
Why didn't they just set them on fire? Everyone knows structures collapse when they are on fire for more than 40 minutes.
lvaneedeAug 27, 2010
especially when they are made of fireproof materials
Closed AccountAug 26, 2010
The new digg is absolute garbage.
slipperyottterAug 27, 2010
you don't have enough up arrows.
lemme help you with that
stymluxAug 26, 2010
Awesome too would have been an interactive video inside view, like http://www.dallascowboys.com/farewell/Texas_Stadium_Implosion.cfm
