brad3378Aug 15, 2010
Another reason they can finance their own recovery.
gefahrAug 16, 2010
According to http://costofwar.com/ (sources in footer)..
The war in Afghanistan has cost the US alone over $324 billion to date.
1.8 billion barrels, even if it was 100% profit (like if it magically came out of the ground, jumped into barrels, and shipped itself) would only be worth about $135 billion at the time of my posting.
Some perspective on how much this war is costing. There's virtually no resources that could be discovered there that would ever make this pay for itself, unfortunately.
mulockAug 16, 2010
Oil has a value far greater than $$$$. Having more of it, means when s**t hits the fan you have more power. IE Peak Oil, etc.

A poor goat farmer, never kept his family fed.

Oil that is, black gold, Arabian tea.
Well the first thing you know ol' Hamed's a billionaire,

Yes, we understand what he was saying Crunchy, but his point is moot because oil was discovered nearly a decade after the invasion.
Say what you will about Iraq, but Im reasonably sure we didnt go to Afghanistan for the oil... Im pretty sure we actually went there for the terrorists. I know its unpopular to believe the common dialogue here, but until recently Afghanistan was just a barren mountainous black hole that swallowed every invasion attempt since Alexander the Great.

I think you mean "Oil wasn't PUBLICLY discovered until nearly a decade after invasion.
In addition, we didn't go into Afghanistan for the oil or the minerals or the terrorists. We went to secure an overland route for a pipeline that runs from Iraq, through Afghanistan to the Black Sea, thereby bypassing the Strait of Hermos and Iran's control of it. Wheels within wheels.

That news and the Lithium news will make it even harder to get rid of that tiny minority ruining it for everybody, the Taliban.
xs11axAug 15, 2010
How did you work that one out?
swordedgeAug 16, 2010
Easy, the two resources represent bajillions of dollars or what ever unit of money you care to use. Everybody in the country wants to control it. The Taliban will look around them, think about the Lithium, and keep fighting when otherwise, they might give up.
xs11axAug 16, 2010

Abundance in natural resources is known to impede economic growth and development. This is known as the resource curse:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_curse
People were already scared for Afganistan's future once huge Lithium deposits were discovered there. This only makes the problem worse. This paradox of plenty seems linked to increased conflicts and corruption and reduced economic diversification.

f**k.
pistolfredAug 16, 2010
Not quite "in any way". Afghanistan already had some oil, just not in the quantities its neighbours do. More important, though, is the oil north of Afghanistan in places like Turkmenistan. In the 90s, UNOCAL wanted to build a pipeline through Afghanistan into Pakistan as going through Iran wasn't a viable option. The pipeline might have been for natural gas instead of oil but that's close enough (for me). For whatever reason, this was abandoned but brought back to life just a few months after the attacks in Afghanistan began. I think the project fell apart again several years later.
eadintAug 16, 2010
Actually it's not to far from the truth, the reason why afganistan is so screwed is because of a lack of natural resources. Whith these natural resouces their economy can kick into high gear and they can afford to invest in infrastructure education and quite possibly develop their own middle class, that is the key to a stable government and economy, this is actually a very good thing for their country, interest in investment will be a really good thing

10+ Land mines is a great evil. It's a serious thing that Obama did not keep his Campaign promise to end the war. That he hasn't is an indication that he, as was Bush, is much to amenable to outside influence. Congress fails to declare a war and uses procedural/bureaucratic smoke and mirrors to divorce itself from its clear Constitutional responsibilities.

Numbers like this tend to include the total size of the reservoir, but recovery rates are 25-40% of the total, cutting that number to about a month of US consumption.
kebwiAug 16, 2010
Hmmm, so by my logic we should spend, as most, 92 days attempting to insure access to this oil...then we should unconditionally quit regardless of the current state of the conflict.
...I doubt it will go that way though.
