Everything has failed to compete with iPad thus far...that reign can't last forever...
tuppe666Jan 5, 2012
iPads market share of tablets is dropping significantly as the market for tablets is expanding. I suspect with Apples price premium is going to kill it for the mainstream user. I wouldn't get an Android tablet even with its better hardware for apples prices. As for Apples Tablet reign some estimates put it as long as two years.
johnnysoftwareJan 6, 2012
It started off at around 100% so the only place you can go from there if you move at all is down.
Apple's charging users for:
- security, which Android users don't seem to "get"
(in more ways than one)
- compatibility: by far more apps run on iPad/iPhone than
any other handheld today or in history (Android has grown
but still has far fewer apps, and its apps are subject to
balkanization due to the cacophony of different screen
sizes, which are not okay at small physical sizes and
resolutions but only at larger ones)
- one of the less threatened/threatening platforms regarding
intellectual property rights [so far as is obvious, anyway]
That said, Java is a pretty spiffy programming language, so Android has that going in its favor.
Android being built on Java is a bit of a risk, however, as Oracle seems to feel it is not getting its financial due from Google. Java is open source, but you can't leave out required packages and say you are still in compliance with the license, it seems.
It Oracle forces Google to remove Java from Android, there go all of the Android apps. They are written in Java and they call Java system libraries. The apps platform would be vaporized and Android would have to start over.
Would app developers go for Go if Java hits the road and leaves Android? Unclear. Maybe. But would users/consumers wait for a new app catalog to be built up from zero?
Apple is not much more expensive if you are looking at apps. If you are paying for black plastic, then sure. But go buy a paper weight then, it's a better investment.
A pretty sane approach to buying any electronic device is to figure out how short an amount of time the _shortest_ of these two things is:
- How long would you want to use it for?
- How long before the batteries die and I need to replace them/it?
- How long before I cannot update it with new/safe software?
Then ask yourself the following:
- How much money am I going to spend on things to make this
thing work (units, options, warranties, repairs) or not
work (e.g. third party antivirus bandages)?
Divide that up by the number of months you think you will use the product.
Apple's price come out not that much more than Android's.
If you're an experienced computing & consumer electronics customer/user, then you might also want to look at your "per decade" cost for each different platform, assuming you are not going to hop from one to another.
- How much of my investment (apps, data, money spent) will
transfer over to whatever product I replace this one with
a few years from now?
If you change to a semi-incompable or totally incompatible platform every few years, you are probably ringing up costs you would not otherwise face.
Android hardware seems pretty different from one model and make to the next. Differences for the sake of differences just add cost and/or incompatibility.
Android apps in the official & community 'marketplace' stores have ripped people off, as it appears getting a trojan banking app into either one is not very hard. Google's scrutiny must be lacking where protecting huge sums of other people's money is involved, and those people are just Android customers is all.
So Android has premium costs and inconvenience, for people [and companies who are people] not in the last few years of their life.
I am not going to furnish answers to all those questions above. Only the prospective consumer (or enterprise) can supply the correct answers for them, and only if their planning/projecting/prognostication is pretty good. **
People need to _judge_ all the platforms; the commitment of the platform owning/making stakeholders, the commitment of app developers, and the commitment of consumers which helps sustain those commitments. It is worth dwelling on.
** Judging from accuracy of tech blogs on predicting "future products," hopefully they are not in journalism field. :-D
When someone says that there is an "Apple premium" or an "Apple tax" they likely don't know what they are talking about. It is best to have a good framework in front of you for doing comparative shopping.
A parrot and a newspaper article go together to produce only one thing. Parrot droppings.
If guys like that were right, Zune would be a top-selling MP3 player, Kin Zune-based phone would have been on the market for more than a few weeks, nobody would ever successfully hack Windows, Windows hacking would have gotten milder & less frequent as its & IE market share slid downward, code-generating 4GL languages requiring no programming skills would have blown conventional programming languages away, and we would all still be programming in C/C++.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

WOW I am so impressed worst cut and pace ever. I really must have excited someone to go this far. I will address as much as I can.
Apple is charging people for its brand nothing else!
Then you move onto apple spin!! You say Security...you mean control! You say compatability you mean lack of choice...only small screen phones ;).
Then you outright bend the truth Apple had 20% more apps and 40% more fart apps :) , but lets face it show me your best apps on your phone...and I bet they look like mine :)
Apple is litigious I don't think that means they are IP safe, In fact they seem to have started a fire they can't put out. They seen to be looking all those court cases recently to Samsung :)
Java is just ONE language that is available on Android. As for Oracle. They want money not a scared reputation.
My phone has a joypad...other Android phones have keyboards. 5" screens, or simply glamor free for an affordable price seem like those features not only matter its why Apple has half the users of Android.
I bought most of my my Apps in the 10day 10apps a day sale or in Gamelofts sale still running I believe...,and Amazon yes you can choose a different store on android, they even have one that just has FOSS software has a free app a day. Thats ignoring all the advertisement driven software, if you would rather pay that way.
See I can answer all your questions. The tablet you are using is overpriced and out of date. Android is everywhere and its getting bigger. Count those activations.
topfiveJan 6, 2012
Apple is charging people for a superior product not a brand. My IPhone was the first phone that ever just worked.
You can jailbreak an iPhone, you have been able to do that forever, so there is no real control.
I've never seen an android phone that was as aesthetically pleasing as iPhone. I've also never seen one that flows as well, try dragging stuff around on an iPhone then try on Android.
Android is nowhere near ready to compete with Apple on product, Amazon new that and that's why they went to compete on price. Very smart move. Look at everybody who has tried to compete on product and you will find a long list of defeated tablets.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I'm not refuting you, I'm basically telling you... "Your perspective on things is limited".
I have a iPad2, two Android phones, and I operate over a thousand computers through the businesses I help provide support for.
One thing is clear, the Apple brand is an illusion of top quality. Consumers have no problem paying premium rates for iPad2s because they lack the understanding as to what makes the technology tick. Consumers just enjoy a ease of use, and centralized access.
I love my iPad2, it has turned into my mobile gaming platform, and allowed me to resort my two android phones for work and productivity. However one of my co-workers uses his iPad primarily for productivity and his android devices for games and entertainment. Its a catch-22, depends on the person, thing.
Did you know a iPad2 in materials cost, is only less than $200 ($183, when you break down the components to their wholesale price) So why is it, there is a clear 200 ~ 800 dollar price markup? Its because Apple controls the whole niche of the Apple market.
Which is a okay thing in my opinion. Sure i could jailbreak my Apple devices, but how long will it be, before my jailbreak is undone through a software update by Apple. Today my iPad2 is unsupported by any Jailbreak app available because of the hardware model of my iPad. some earlier iPad2s can be jail-broken, but mine can't... Yet.
Apple controls the software market on the iDevices. Sure once jail-broken I can use external sources, but again. I'm in the group of users who can't jailbreak yet.
I have two android phones, One for personal, and the other for work. Aesthetically they both are identical because I installed same interface software (LaunchPad or Zeam like GUI over HTC Sense or MotoDroid)
The issue I think you are whining about is more or less manufacture specific. Sure Android devices are pretty much a dime a dozen, and thanks to the choices in manufacture you have a large fragmentation of hardware designs. But that doesn't change the fact that one could customize their android phones to the point that outside of that one specific user, anyone else who would hold those android devices would be clueless as to how to operate them.
Android provide customizability for the user, while apple does not. Software apps, I already see 5 to 10 different apps in various android markets that can do the same task for free. Many have different perspectives in how the interfaces should work, but at least I know I have more choices than I do in the Apple App Store.
There are companies that provide software for the same price across platforms. Think about SquareUp. A Credit Card processing app, that is in Android, and iOS. The iPad version of the app is awesome, the Android version of the app, gives me more choice in Point of Sales options, yet both operate exactly the same.
Have you checked out the Transformer, or even any new Android Tablet today? Many of these tablets out perform the iPad2 in leaps and bounds.
So my guess is, you are not the type of user who customizes your computer (Mac or PC), finds any and all methods to make your devices your own.
That is what I do. I customize my equipment. I customize systems for my clients to suit their needs. When a client asks me about my iPad, I give them the straight story, and no personal bias as to why a specific product is the only choice.
I look at technical instead of aesthetics. But I enjoy aesthetics that comes from the technical.
When a client asks me which is better, Apple or PC, I ask them what do they want to do with said device.
When I get down to price, I often times end up having to purchase PC equipment over Apple because Apple is all about Aesthetics.
In one case, I was setting up a coffee shop. The owner was on a tight budget. But instead of listening to me on what his equipment requirements needs were he HAD to be 100% apple products. I called this the Hipster syndrome, where he was only able to get half of his equipment needs, and quickly became overwhelmed by his IT needs. But because he spent all his money on Apple, he spent twice as long a time to purchase more equipment to finally meet his basic business needs.
Meanwhile, other places that followed my direction purchased cheaper PC equipment, but had spare money to grow on. Sure the coffee shop was hip, but the people working there were pissed because their needs were not met. (Yes the blame is solely on the owner for being a douche)
tuppe666Jan 6, 2012
You say Apple is charging for a Superior product...yet the specifications speak against that.
You say first Phone that "Just Worked" It must be be that this annoys every time I hear it. I have NEVER owned a phone that did not just work.

Considering the way Android is eating into the Apple tablet market it seems unlikely :) As I suspect that both of those failed due to the how increasingly unpopular those operating systems are...even on phones.

But really. This story has no point. Google is huge. They make Android devices. Android is huge. Google makes a tablet, it's huge. They're always challenging each other. It's pretty simple. Yes.

Ever heard of Android? It's make by Google. Tada!

Kindle runs on the Android operating system... so technically it is Google tablet. Also, I love my Xoom and have owned nothing but Apple computers, I am an Apple Fan Boy and and Android Fan Boy (yes we can coincide). The way Apple markets, it takes about 3 to 4 rounds before they give you the best they've got. And with Tegra 3 coming out, a quad-core with 2gb, the Android tablets are just going to keep getting better, especially if you are a gamer or enjoy real mulit-tasking. I may get a iPad one day, but not until version 5 or 6 is out. Xoom came with front and rear camera, dual core and is very flexible as far as tweaking. Apple waited until just after Christmas 2010 to give you a tablet with front and rear cameras, marketing. So, yes I think Android tablets will keep getting better, especially since Kindle is a Google tablet and you can get them for $200. But there will always be people who are Apple all the way. Google has a Tablet operating system, Honeycomb...Apple is still running OS4, a phone operating system on their tablets... Google is a powerhouse to not be taken lightly.
kalvinbJan 6, 2012
Apple is the Monster Cables of tablets and PCs. I looked up the price of 8GB of ram for a Mac Mini: $400 from Mac. Less than $40 for 8GB of PNY memory from NewEgg or other reputable stores.
If Google can come up with a $300 or less tablet with comparable screen resolution, etc to Apple, they'll take a huge chunk of the market.
You can't fix stupid so Apple will always have the "elitist" demographic which is fine. Rich people need their snooty toys sometimes.
