Google appears to have it's own prejudices and biases. The search engine reflects it.

Google is not blocking anything, idiots!
neotechniJan 30, 2011
Agreed. They basically flipped the MAFIAA the bird and did the bare minimum they could get away with.
Googling for whatever +torrent still works fine
theghoulJan 30, 2011
That there is no such thing as true free speech.
hippielandJan 30, 2011
Unfortunately that is the truth. For now.
staffaJan 30, 2011
Google is free to respond to your query how ever it wants, that is part of free speech.
Of course, we are free to judge them, their product and our continued use of it based on their response just as we are free not to associate with people who sound like idiots who think free speech should only apply to them.
wossnamexJan 30, 2011
While there may be some merit to the argument that Google should not be doing this, to equate it to censorship is extreme in my view.
WPrivetJan 30, 2011
How about this, then?

From Wired (http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/01/google-islam-censorship/):
"If you type, “Buddhism is” or “Christianity is,” Google will quickly show you suggestions for what it thinks you might be trying to type. In the former query’s case, the Google guesses “not a religion,” “wrong,” “not what you think.” Christianity gets tougher treatment with the suggestions “bulls**t” and “not a religion.”
But the query “Islam is”? Not a thing comes to mind for Google to suggest. (Search results are still there, of course.)"Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
asielenJan 30, 2011
Have you tried? Things come up if you type in "Islam is"
wossnamexJan 30, 2011
I still don't think it qualifies as censorship. At best it's a lack of encouragement.
It's not autocomplete's job to tell you what the prevailing opinion on Islam is. If you want to know, go ahead and hit enter.
jonpaul333Jan 30, 2011
Dude - I just typed "Islam is" into google.com and the first two autocomplete suggestions are "of the devil" and "evil". That's an interesting gif and all, but it's seems to have been made by someone who was trying to get you worked up over something that isn't true.
johnilmJan 30, 2011
The gif is old ... there was a time when typing "Islam is" into Google gave you no suggestions, but Google attributed it to a "glitch". Either way they have since fixed/changed it (obviously).

oxyrubberJan 30, 2011
Empirical evidence shows that "Islam is" has autocomplete suggestions... even if the suggestions don't parallel all the other religions in your gif. Quit trolling.
johnilmJan 30, 2011
This comment is outdated. He's not trolling. There was a time when typing "Islam is" didn't give any auto-complete results. Google was called out for showing "cowardice". They countered that they didn't do it purposefully, but it was only a glitch (which they eventually fixed). Bury this guy all you want, but not because he's a liar, just because he's outdated.
krazedkaozJan 30, 2011
oh so its fine if its china censoring for them to take a stand but at home nooooooooo thats no good. idiots
nygenxerJan 30, 2011
Typing "te" gives:
texas lottery
texas workforce commission [unemployment]
texas a&m
texas department of public safety [the fuzz]
breadfredJan 30, 2011
You live in Texas perchance?
nygenxerJan 30, 2011
I wouldn't call it "living." I'm a NYer whose been stuck down here since 10/2001 when I came down here for a visit after 9/11. The economy crashed and has stayed in the toilet for a decade. ("Jobless recovery" is an oxymoron.)
It's as if my boat was beached by an unusually high tide stranding me below the bible belt in the nation's taint without a volleyball named Wilson.
Don't get me wrong, some of the people here are wonderful and excellent, but there are reasons for the stereotypes - and they REALLY don't like NYers!
breadfredJan 30, 2011
Man, that sucks. Never been to Texas but heard of the stereotypes - and I know what you mean that there is a reason behind stereotypes - you usually only learn that after traveling around for a bit.
o76923Jan 30, 2011
So now we have to hit enter to search for BitTorrent, how terrible. We can still type in "house torrents" and "the pirate bay". Hell, you can even type in bittorrent (without capitalization) to find it! Sure, it's lame that Google is censoring themselves to cow tow to our evil content producing masters. But it isn't all that inconvenient.
janetfruminJan 30, 2011
Google doesn't ban criminal activities which is no concern of Google, isn't it?
brunesJan 30, 2011
More like "what do senseationalist titles and incorrect articles say about modern media"
Google is not censoring bull. They simply removed some search terms from the instant search. Hit the button and they still work.

Google - Google - Urber Alez!!!!!
trax852Jan 30, 2011
I had to quit using Chrome to search for torrents, they wouldn't
search. Chrome to browse, Opera to search, and finally my
default browser again.
I notice they've come back. I tested it again for this comment.
But months ago you couldn't get results from Chrome for:
anything site:thepiratebay.orgComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
jeffg1Jan 30, 2011
Author makes some good points.
beetnemesisJan 30, 2011
I mean, yes, this is bad, but how difficult is it to hit the enter button and see search results?
jurybenJan 30, 2011
Its the principle of th sitituation. By the time we know it, porn will be censored.
dannyhirtlerJan 30, 2011
So the authors complaint is that he has to manually type in the words Bittorent and Vodo instead of google doing it for him? I don't really see it as a big deal
Closed AccountJan 30, 2011
Im not sure I understand why they did it. Its not like Google was doing anything wrong and they make a lot of money, so why cave in? Where is the benefit?
