Om, I have been writing about a related issue on my site for some time now and it’s one I think remains overlooked:
was Steve Jobs’ last UI efforts geared toward solving this “dopamine” addiction?
Unlike Windows Phone, for example, which offers a constant stream of real-time notifications and updates, Apple was hesitant to do anything similar. Even now, iPhone — the original app phone — attempts to force us to focus on one application, one task at a time.
Again, look at the upcoming Windows (PC) UI: a stream of real-time information and a design that encourages multitasking. Whereas Mac OS Lion encourages applications to occupy the entire window and remove everything else.
I don’t hear folks talking about this but it seems to me a very distinct break in UI vision.

It's pretty easy to turn off your cell phone if you're getting annoyed. Apparently, people forgot that you can do that.

True video. Perfect example, when I receive a voicemail...
- 1 notification of the new voicemail from my carrier
- 1 notification of a new transcribed message from google voice
- 1 notification of a new e-mail sent to my gmail from google voice.
- If I missed the call, I also have a notification for that too.
If this happens twice between checking messages, combined with e-mail or other notifications, that's when the devices get turned off and/or thrown against the table.

You can turn off emails going to your gmail from Google Voice and why you're using BOTH your carrier's VM and Google Voice is a bit confusing, unless you're using GV for more than a voicemail service.
