While this may solve the problem of Acid Rain, I hope it doesn't result in Golden Showers.

Why are they using pee for power... there are already water powered cars.
animalMay 15, 2011
I don't think urea is free hydrogen, it would still have to be extracted somehow. Whether such a process would be more efficient than getting hydrogen from water I don't know. Urea already has many uses from what I can tell browsing a few sites, so why isn't our pee being captured already? I think it might probably have to do with the fact that capturing it out of what is actually mostly water in any of millions and millions of 'deposit' sites seems like a tall order and probably way too much work than current methods of creating it.

Uhm no officer, im not urinating in public, im refilling my care... honest!

i know that biodiesel smells like the used oil it comes from so would that mean the emissions would smell like burning piss? kind of a buzz killer for me.
UncleTogieMay 14, 2011
Poor reporter flunked basic chemistry with this quote:
"Even though urine is nearly 99 percent water, there is a lot of hydrogen in the remaining one percent from an organic compound called urea."
Uh, there was a lot of hydrogen in the water as well, bucko... In fact, *so* much hydrogen that it outnumbered the oxygen in the water by a 2-1 ratio.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I'm going to take a guess that the math of this works out to be trivial amount of energy, lets see:
Average adult produces 1-2 L of urine a day.
The article says nearly 99% is water, so we'll be nice and say 2% is hydrogen:
That means an adult pees 0.04 L of hydrogen a day.
Liquid hydrogen has 9.3 MJ/L so you're peeing 0.372 MJ a day. Gasoline has 34.8 MJ/L so you're peeing the energy equivalent of 10 ml of gasoline per day (a 12 ounce can of pop is 355 ml)
Yup, just as I suspected, exceedingly trivial.

barackalypseMay 14, 2011
And I just realized they're actually just electrolysing the pee, so they'll end up recovering hydrogen from the water too. This is why crappy articles about this stuff are infuriating, they distort the science.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
