geeksaresexy.net — It feels as if everyone has told bankers where to get off in the past couple of years. That’s certainly the case with a letter written by Cambridge University, though this time it’s not a criticism of irresponsible lending and investment. Instead Britain’s banks have been told to go whistle after demanding that a student’s thesis be censored.

This type of research was ever considered suitable for publication by the University. It gives us cause to worry that future research, which may potentially be more damaging, may also be published in this level of detail.

Well... There is no mystery as to how to build a nuclear device either, I can give you all the specifics if you want, that is not the hard part. The hard part about building nukes are to get all the material needed and to engineer and manufacture it to extreme specifications.
The problem is that banks and financial institutions for decades have been claiming their system is fool proof and can not be broken. The problem is that we all have known this to be pure unadulterated bulls**t but it has been difficult to prove. This does exactly that - show the world how it is not foolproof and can be broken - easily.
That is what the banks don't like and wants censured - something which clearly is not in the customers best interest!

"You seem to think that we might censor a student’s thesis, which is lawful and already in the public domain, simply because a powerful interest finds it inconvenient. This shows a deep misconception of what universities are and how we work. Cambridge is the University of Erasmus, of Newton, and of Darwin; censoring writings that offend the powerful is offensive to our deepest values. Thus even though the decision to put the thesis online was Omar’s, we have no choice but to back him. That would hold even if we did not agree with the material."

I haven't logged in to Digg anything in over a year and a half. If anything deserves it, this does. Ross Anderson is my hero.

Be interesting to see how this would be handled at an American university; possibly pull the students financial aid and threaten to expel?

Censorship is just one more form of disrespect.
Things aren't going to get better until we stop being so hard on each other.
