To be fair, the headline is misleading, the $100 million mentioned was donated by Apple under Jobs, he just never announced it or made a big deal about it. The new Cook initiative is the employee match up to $10,000, which is quite something. Still, what this is really saying is that Cook is more concerned with the PR of charitable giving than Jobs was, who felt that it shouldn't be done as marketing ploy.

Maybe he should consider spending some of that on better conditions for the people who make his stuff, so they stop trying to kill themselves?

Considering how much bad publicity Apple is getting on that front, I am sure they are in talks right now with their Chinese manufacturing partners about this.
