"Since the dust settled from the disastrous launch of V3..." Dust doesn't settle until the sink hole they created stops getting bigger.
casspaJan 14, 2011
I'd say it has stopped getting bigger. The front page traffic seems to be increasing, in very small amounts, but still coming back little by little.
mhuntJan 15, 2011
That's because stories stay on the front page for 24+ hours now. With V3, I could go to digg in the morning, and then again in the late afternoon and see a different set of articles.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
spartan777Jan 15, 2011
With V2, there'd be an entirely new frontpage after 2 or so hours.
krayziekydJan 15, 2011
same with V3, since we're now on V4 and the author is an idiot.
mhuntJan 15, 2011
That's my point. They're leaving stories up forever to make the numbers look big.
Closed AccountJan 15, 2011
pretty easy to see that traffic has NOT increased, even alittle.
camilos007Jan 15, 2011
Traffic is only part of the problem. Digg is now full of soccer moms and soccer dads who love articles from TMZ & the National Enquirer.
dirtyfriesJan 14, 2011
Don't they mean disastrous launch of V4, not V3?
cy3orgJan 15, 2011
yeah, that's what I thought too.
krayziekydJan 15, 2011
bingo
jayskullsJan 14, 2011
It's too bad, really. Stability issues aside I feel like Digg went downhill when they tried to be more "user centric".
shadowspawnJan 14, 2011
Stability can be worked out. Bugs can be quashed. Performance can be increased. Someone needs to take the slapstick to the designers, and that should've been the developers.
There are fundamental flaws with the interface, and these came to be not just because of the disparaging differences in the technology users have available to access social media sites.
Design should be oriented towards what the user base actually does, and this was the biggest problem. Whoever dreamed of the "new" dig was new to computers and the internet as a whole (and I don't care what lucky wave they rolled in on and got wealthy because of it), no, whomever thought that what *they* wanted is what the people wanted.
That's a deep, dark, blackish and hellish hole to get sucked in, yet the past was never a lesson truly learned by those that spearheaded the project. Those that conceived it would've been better off with a pat in the head, given a bit of a snack, and told to go back and play in the yard.
Management decided to give the paychecks to the yes-men, who then took away exactly it was that the "base" utilized, removed it forcibly and without warning, blamed *their most loyal and vocal users* for not giving feedback during testing beta code. So management does what it always does... cuts their losses, cashes in the paycheck while there is still a paycheck to be had, and turned the collective back upon the people.
Digg is the perfect company to be used as a study of what not to do in so many areas it could be somebody's thesis, and probably is.
youngbuchananJan 14, 2011
Good article. Would support the opinion that Digg should start the rumour wheel going before any big announcment. Although they may want to avoid what happened when the much awaited update came out last time round. Look forward to seeing the changes. Digg needs to be back at the top of the social news networks.
jarbainJan 14, 2011
Digg used to be worth reading, but ever since the launch of the new UI, it is really bad. R.I.P.
mhuntJan 15, 2011
You're not a fan of digg/cracked/totalprosports?
cryinlionJan 15, 2011
cracked i don't mind. some of their stuff is neat; maybe half of what gets to the front page i find interesting.
where the hell did totalprosports come from? "VIDEO OF THE DAY!!!! SOCCER PLAYER FROM UZBEKISTAN TRIPS AND SCORES ANYWAY!!!"

Soon to be called "The finaly futile attempt to save Digg."
phriend2spinJan 14, 2011
It's really too late. All that is left with digg is blogspam articles and YouTube style comments. It really was a fun and more community driven site. Not so much anymore.
lynx44Jan 14, 2011
Agreed. 95% of the reason I came to digg was for the comments. Now they're terrible, they lost a lot of the users that made them who they were. I still check the site every day, but I can't help but become more attached to reddit now, just because the comments are so much better.
shaunywJan 15, 2011
Have you actually been to Reddit? There is a lot of call on DIGG now to go there, but when you do. . . Thank F*** for DIGG V4.
bigblahJan 15, 2011
I'm also grateful that Digg v4 keeps people like you out of Reddit
spartan777Jan 15, 2011
Digg and Reddit both have their pros and cons. I've been on Digg since 2005, and Reddit since 2008. Reddit is still ugly and often confusing, but their subreddit system works great for selecting what you want to read. Digg is very attractive and easier to use, but has fewer options to customize the experience. The "My News" feature is easy because Digg automatically adds what stories the people you "Follow" and figures you what you'd like based on your Digg history. Back in the days of V2 and V3, Digg had a great sense of overall community solidarity and connection. This was due to the fact that regardless of what your digging preferences and who you followed, if a Digg story was big enough (500-2000 Diggs depending on how big Digg was) everyone would see it. Reddit is too atomized and fast moving to catch even some very, very big stories.
However, what makes Reddit better than Digg are the comments. All the smart, witty people went to Reddit or elsewhere. What we have left are Digg Patriot Spam, and typical Yahoo/Youtube users. The Digg comment section is f**king awful. A lot of comments aren't even full sentences, never mind though-out paragraphs with structure.
cryinlionJan 15, 2011
we lost so many diverse voices; the comments now are dominated by radicals on either side like novenator and quirkopatra and they've each got some good things to say but it's the same stuff over and over again and i get sick of it.
Closed AccountJan 15, 2011
I apologize if I upset you... but bear in mind, Novenator writes for a blog that is involved with a "family" of blogs.
I don't.
mrbradgJan 15, 2011
TOTALLY agreed.
slappybag9Jan 15, 2011
ATTENTION FANS!
On January 31st we will all watch "BLAH BLAH BLAH" by s**tTY SINGER!
Nah, whats annoying about that? ;)
spartan777Jan 15, 2011
LOL!
FPSmotoJan 14, 2011
Hey, the haters will hate. I like the new Digg for the most part. Obviously still some bugs and spammers to squash, but it's still a decent site.
Also, if some of you haven't realized yet, Digg is completely FREE, so stop your bitching.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bratterscainJan 14, 2011
Because repelling honest criticism is the best way to improve, right? Also, you're obviously naive if you think digg and the typical popular website is free. Ads are posted, minds are sold. Of course, a lot of us don't buy into those but ad sponsored money is not an illusion.

So kube...you place zero value on your time?
alyxvanceJan 14, 2011
Ripp Digg
evildeadashJan 15, 2011
Over the past 30 days the most popular story only got to 1394 diggs. 1394... Ouch. I remember right before v4 launched that they were getting those numbers (and higher) all the time. I honestly think Digg committed suicide with the launch of v4 and there may be no coming back from it ever.
mrbradgJan 15, 2011
Back in the say I used to LIVE on digg. Now, I cannot blame this on design flaws entirely because they're reasons I haven't been on the past year or two. New job, etc. But, I will say that it's partly several things:
1. Geeks almost don't rule anymore. It's turning into my grandmothers email box.
2. The f**king ads suck and nobody cares about the stupid ass Windows phone. KNOW YOUR DEMOGRAPHIC.
3. Kevin Rose seems like he could give two s**ts. Listening to Diggnation sometimes makes me think of him as a spoiled rich boy. ALMOST a little prickish. This is coming from a guy who drove 7 hours to attend the St. Louis live Diggnation back in the day.
4. I'll think of more later. Spent my 2 mins on this site and nothing makes me stay on like it used to.
Closed AccountJan 15, 2011
#1 hasn't been the case for at least 2-3 years now.
#2 is your delusion, not theirs.
#3 You built Kevin Rose up in your own mind. Theree was never any reason to see him as anything OTHER than prickish. HE ias exuded that from day 1.
spartan777Jan 15, 2011
"nobody cares about the stupid ass Windows phone. KNOW YOUR DEMOGRAPHIC."
This is the kind of irrational comment that drags Digg down. If Digg users aren't the *perfect* Windows Phone advertisement target, nobody is.
cryinlionJan 15, 2011
Yeah. I mean, I'd just go ahead and say "nobody is". But, point taken.
mrbradgJan 15, 2011
Dear Kevin,
You can throw all the money at someone or something and all the so called "talent" but, it will never go back to the glory if you forget why you started this in the first place. Love ya bro but things need to go back or it's soon all going to be over and all you're going to have is your angel investing and old friends.
Brad
wilhoitmJan 15, 2011
He might never be able to get it back! I bet the most of the original developers have been royally screwed and they are probably recovering or working someplace else now!
iriemeditationJan 15, 2011
Yea it will never be the same... once you sell-out in an attempt to go mainstream, not only do you lose your credibility, but you also lose those people who love you b/c you are NOT mainstream... i hope commercial profits are making you guys happy in your new offices :o\

Alienware computers, bought out by Dell. Dell is OK and great customer service, that I've seen. But, Alienware was THE top end computer to buy, and the appeal definitely changed for me.
lbtsJan 15, 2011
Use to love Digg. It was a very informative site. Now it is slow, story wise, and is a pain to navigate. They've dumbed down the site to the point where it has lost most of its usefulness.
iriemeditationJan 15, 2011
Dumbed it down because a lot of these new users are also dumbed down LOL they're linking foxnews and leaving hateful comments 8( new digg sucks!!
arschgaudiJan 15, 2011
If your going to be a true social media site then you need to be accepting of viewpoints that don't necessarily agree with you own
iriemeditationJan 15, 2011
i call bullsh !t on u (and not for the first time i think, i can tell by your obnoxious picture) because i strongly disagree with the corporate robbing and looting of my friends and family, and the strong armed, military approach to religious brainwashing which deeply offends me... so fk off if you think you can come here supporting the lies you believe, in combination with some good ol' hate, violence, and outright stupidity (in the name of God, i'm sure) and then expect to be welcomed with open arms, fk u!
wilhoitmJan 15, 2011
Matt, please fix the comments history function! It is almost like you guys think nothing is wrong with it! LOL! Do you guys even use your own site?
Closed AccountJan 15, 2011
Come on! Give them a break! I has only been 4 1/2 months! You think they could make such a minor change in that short a time! What are they, miracle workers?!?
Besides, they are still working on the fact that the page still breaks 20% of the time. Another thing that is so difficult to fix in just 20 short weeks!
SP120KJan 15, 2011
I wish digg the best, I plan on using it more.
mixedAppleJan 15, 2011
Matt Come on. Digg needs you a lot. I wish for long live Digg.
mugichaJan 15, 2011
R.I.P Digg. I am a long time user and still visit occasionally just to see what is going on, but the love is all gone. Its one of the sadder things I experienced in 2010. I never saw it coming and I had no idea what to do when it happened. I've since picked myself up and moved on (slowly) to Reddit, which actually has great content and a great (if kind of pretentious) community.
I'll never forget you Digg, for what you used to be. But its all gone now.
Namaste.
iriemeditationJan 15, 2011
i just wrote nearly the same thing below, before reading this, and i'm with you!!
iriemeditationJan 15, 2011
New Digg Sucks..... These "Digg Patriot" Losers are killing the peace love and happy vibe we used to have around here..... now we get hate filled comments and links to foxnews 8( worthless garbage! LOL New Digg Sucks!!

i hope you learned something ... ?
mhuntJan 15, 2011
The so-called "digg patriots" might have had an affect on V3 when the bury button actually buried articles. They, if they really did exist, are doing nothing to cause the problems on V4. The numbers are way down. With fewer people reading articles, you have fewer people commenting on articles. And when a certain group of people run out of viable arguments, they always resort to playing the digg patriot card.

Reddit is so much better, always was.
mhuntJan 15, 2011
Reddit will always be an after thought. It hasn't gotten any better. The obvious problem is that digg has slipped down to reddit's level, or possibly below that. On the one hand, that's sad. On the other hand, I have a lot more free time now.
elliotovhullJan 15, 2011
Haha how was digg better than reddit in any aspect? Apart from the way it looks which I like because of it's simplicity, functionality and retarded repelling effects, how is digg better?
wavelionJan 15, 2011
Digg is dead you f**king retards, everyone went to reedit get a f**king clue.
kn0wn1Jan 15, 2011
I LOVE YOU DIGG
