Radio waves from mobile phones can damage health of these children
baloourizaJan 23, 2011
[citation needed]. We've only had radio for a century and only now do people start complaining, and without presenting credible evidence to counter the mountain of evidence suggesting they're completely wrong.
norman619Jan 23, 2011
And monkeys will fly out of your arse each time you say something completely false and/or stupid.
Mike1998Jan 23, 2011
Radio waves are completely harmless, a least a billion radio waves pass through your body every day. Including cell phone, radio (FM *and* AM), walkie talkie, etc. Not to mention the same number of radio waves affect YOU every day. So is your health OK?
baloourizaJan 23, 2011
I would be more inclined to believe that this is true if people who spend a lot of time sending text messages had anything resembling spelling ability.
dusanmalJan 23, 2011
I second your comment with practical example: I teach. Kids in my classes are typically University level freshmen. In recent years new type of spelling mistakes entered the written and typed reports: text messaging type of "shortcuts" ex. 4 vs. "for", 2 vs "to", ...and other more complex examples. No spelling improvement have been seen...
brockatkinsonJan 23, 2011
Have you actually gone back and compared spelling errors between now and ten years ago? Twenty years ago?
I would believe that it would be an improvement, but the differences would be subtle, and unnoticeable year-to-year. But simply put, the more people communicate--the more a person immerses themselves in the written world (including Twitter, Facebook, email etc)--the better they are at spelling. Not in every single case, sure, but there is a definite difference.

Yeah....thank goodness for spellcheck...even though peeple don't use it half the time.
baloourizaJan 23, 2011
The funny thing about that is with T9 auto-completion and full keyboards, there's no excuse for SMS shorthand anymore...
vd853Jan 23, 2011
txt has may mind words.
KRESHJan 23, 2011
Also improves their social awkwardness.
ilovekidrockJan 23, 2011
yea its a great idea to tether your kid to a phone all day
joemcamacho09Jan 23, 2011
No Offense, but there are also disadvantages...like to shortcut the spelling, and sometimes, they also apply it on school (e.g. Text= txt, Hello = Elow Are You Insane= r U nsane?). and they also make them creative words (Hello = HeLl0, whatever = wh4t3v3r...) so, its not also nice if you let the kids addicted to text messaging...
brockatkinsonJan 23, 2011
The point is, for a person to write "c u l8r", they must understand and be able to spell "see you later", first. That's why it actually increases spelling skills, not decreases.
I have heard many people say that text messaging is killing English; it's simply not true.
wpyhJan 23, 2011

I know when I practice my Japanese language with my friends I like texting. It helps me think about what I'm saying how to be clear. I never feel uncomfortable when I text in a foreign language. I'm glad children are benefiting from technology.
norman619Jan 23, 2011
When you text you don't usually spell out full words. You speak in a kind of shorthand.
camproadlessJan 23, 2011
True, but when I text in Japanese I use a dictionary and I type everything out. It helps me create sentences and study. I usually take a lot of time with my Japanese texts. In a way it may defeat the purpose of a quick message, but it helps me to communicate with friends who have limited English speaking ability.
In response to the article, you could always make texting a game for kids. You could say, how many sentences can you send me about school today. You have to use a capital letter, correct spelling and punctuation. Kids love games. Or if you want them to practice identifying vowels you could tell them to send you a text without any vowels in it. That's more with the theme of texting. Kids will have to make a conscious decision to skip all of the vowels. You can then compare and contrast the sentences and talk about why we need vowels and how they help us. Lots of ways to work this texting thing.

Text messaging is keeping a language alive here, thanks to Apple's support for Cherokee text input and display on all devices it's produced in at least the last 10 years.
greenshallJan 23, 2011
Will such children able to write in cursive?
grymusJan 23, 2011
Many today can't. And holy hell... you ask them to sign their name & they print it.
baloourizaJan 23, 2011
My favorite has to be asking for a signature from a younger coworker and they got out an ink pad and made a paw print with their hand...
norman619Jan 23, 2011

roy5000x2Jan 23, 2011
My blackberry does a pretty good job at auto correcting for me. Usually, if I keep on spelling a word incorrectly, I'll get fed up with myself for not knowing how to spell it, and eventually learn a few new words that way. On my old phone though, auto correct was non existent.
NewsMeBackJan 23, 2011
It's just the way it is nowadays.

joemcamacho09Jan 24, 2011
Yeah. But somehow, We should not use shortcuts, because It pops ut on your mind ass the correct spelling...(e.g. Misspelled becomes Mispeled...)...I'm just aware of that because many of use uses that...
gkiltzJan 24, 2011
Spelling DOES change over time. it's part of the necessary evolution of language.
