I wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys helped lulzsec hack PSN. They do know the ins and outs of the network security after all.

yep, that would be a classic error. Never f**k with the BOFH.

Yeah, because disgruntled former employees isn't the first place a company will look after it's attacked...

They pink slipped a bunch of their games department aswell right before the big problem.
would not be surprised if it was an inside job.

Yeah, immediately when reading "sacking key security staff" you just think TROLOLOL revenge.

Now THAT's Revenge of the Nerds.
Although if any of them have ever been found to help they will be utterly screwed.

Though it comes across in this article I read another one where it was more plainly stated:
"witnesses attest that Sony kept vastly different security standards for its own information and that of its customers, using out-of-date software, substandard encryption processes, and no firewalls when it came to customers' data."
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6321043/sony-laid-off-security-staff-prior-to-psn-data-breach-claims-lawsuit?tag=topstory%3Bmore
This is important to know because it shows Sony wasn't incompetent, it was negligent and those are vastly different things.

Unless the fired staff took part in the break-in, I don't see how this makes a difference. Computer/network security isn't like security at your bank or a museum. It isn't like by firing the staff, the network is all of a sudden unguarded. Computer security is persistent. What is up today is up tomorrow and was up yesterday too. The problem was that security was too lax under the old staff and any change in staff wouldn't have made much of a difference (unless the new staff removed the security in place).

Perhaps this security staff were complaining too much about security issues. Security was not something that sony considered for their customers.. Other sony sites are much better protected and kept up to date, no saving of passwords in cleartext.. and so forth

Of course, security at Sony was simply an afterthought... thought about AFTER they laid off a huge number of sysadmins and security staff.

between that time frame, SOE was in transition to SNEI, they were not terminating employees, rather they were hiring more employees that time.. some employees are "terminated" not because they have to, but due to the relocation of the office.. SNEI is the new SOE, they have expanded the employee base, so "terminating" is a little bit over rated..

Unlucky Sony - or is that divine inspiration?
