The pirates didn't have the root kit. Just people that legally purchased their product. In fact it would be nearly impossible to argue that the rootkit could do anything at all to prevent piracy.

In regards to the PS3: Sony is doing what it can in order to act in the best interests of its software developers. If the developers abandon the platform over something like piracy (like the PC), it is practically dead.

i get that it's f**ked up, but people that really need it use for the sole purpose of running linux. with its limited ram and no gfx card support, it was really a gimped product, useless. and the people or groups that do use it mainly run linux in clusters, and never access psn.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Most of the niche players (mil, medical, and phys) that were using the PS3 for Cell have probably moved on to other parallel hardware (most modern day video cards are parallel processing monsters) or may have negotiated some special deals with Sony for custom hardware to keep their existing systems running.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Look what happened to the PSp. I didn't know a single person who owns a legitimate copy of a PSP game. Every person I know who owns, or owned, a PSP would get their games for free.
People cry and whine about how unfair it is that Sony is doing everything it can to lockdown the PS3, but we all know what the overwhelming majority of the whiners would be doing if given the option: pirating PS3 games. It's because of you whining assh**es that OtherOS was removed and Sony has gone into panic mode over the damage done by the Geohot clown. And it's because of those assclowns that no console from here until the end of eternity will ever have additions like OtherOS.

This image illistrates the problem with technology companies perfectly. Back then they were trying to improve the technology to a point where it was usable (no major technical limitations). Now that they have acheived that, technology companies (not just sony) are spending all of their time figuring out how they can screw customers and put limitations in to get them more profit.

Uh, isn't that how businesses should be run? When you are running a business, of course the first thing that comes to mind is how much money do they make. Now, to make money, you have to offer people good products, and this is where Sony is fairly lacking in recent years. Sony just sucks arse. I purchased a digital video camera, and low and behold, the software they supplied with it tried to eat my PC alive, just to get the USB driver. Right up there with Dell in the malware stakes..
