Newswire is pretty addictive, especially when you fine-tune your topics and filters and whatnot. I've thought about adding a "MM HOW ABOUT YOU GO BACK TO WORK NOW" kind of notification. Still thinking about it.
arbiincAug 8, 2011
Filters are awesome!
Is there anyway to filter and see which articles are getting buried?
cdurukAug 8, 2011
In my opinion, right now we have way too many filters and the UI is being pushed to its limits. I'm all for adding more functionality but it comes at the cost of cluttering it up.
In other words, yes, we'd like to add more filtering abilities and maybe make them sharable and stuff but they require quite a bit of thought and reworking of the filtering/sorting UI.

...adding to arbiinc's comment:
First, Great work digg coders and staff !
A few thoughts/ideas
This [ newswire transparency ] needs to be implemented system wide.
Before you can comment on a thread users must digg or bury the sub, adding user bury list...same as the dugg users list.
In order to digg or bury user comments a comment should be required, if you approve or disapprove you probably have an opinion. This would curb the blind comment +/- votes some and/or something similar.
User profiles need to be tweaked to include "voluntary" transparency stats: number of daily/hourly digg/bury, comment +/-, session time, etc.
Tighter threshold/ratio of allowed comment +/- per X-min/X-hour/X-session.
Accounts that are banned... +/- votes, digg/bury activity should be removed from all subs/comments as well.

effyochickenAug 9, 2011
Sounds like you value quantity over quality. That approach will do several things:
"Before you can comment on a thread users must digg or bury the sub,"
That just makes it more annoying to comment on a thread. You go to comment on a submission you just read and it denies you on grounds that you haven't given it an up/down vote yet. What if you're like me, and 85% of the time you're simply neutral and don't care about where the submission itself ends up, only the particular comment you're replying to? It's just another obstacle to commenting at a time where quality comments are sparse.
A better option would be to prompt the user, after their first comment on a submission, asking if they would like to digg or bury the article, with a "no thanks" option. Most would be like "oh yeah, might as well."
"In order to digg or bury user comments a comment should be required, if you approve or disapprove you probably have an opinion."
- Do you want a youtube comment section that badly? Yes, you have an opinion, but what if your opinion is simply "oh yeah! I agree!"? Those comments ALWAYS get buried, just because they suck. Nobody cares that you simply agree, that's what the up/down vote is for. If you have something worthwhile to add, chances are you'll add it.
The top comments sometimes reach 50-100 points, which could mean 150-300 votes total. Do you honestly believe more than 10% of those 300 people have something good to add?
The blind-vote thing is a problem, but the utter lack of quality conversation in the comment section is an even bigger problem.
I would like to mention the following alternative; For every x-diggs (or burries) you must comment, and for every x-comments you must digg/bury. That way you can comment on occasion instead.
I agree with the voluntary stats, creating a "bury list", and removing banned up/down votes.
comgenAug 9, 2011
@effyochicken
"Sounds like you value quantity over quality. That approach will do several things:" - effyochicken
Not necessarily, accountability and/or a more honest approach by users. For example, to simply bury based on "not liking an individual" disregarding the context of the comment or because you favor said person does very little good overall for the community, Vote +/- based on context and/or opinion..which we seem to agree on. There are users that simply stalk comment profiles and vote +/- blindly. Personally this does not bother me being that I'm prone to equal attention for some odd reason :-) and to be voted up/down regardless of quality/context of my comment(s) has no effect on my life here on digg or in the real world. However, for some digg ( social networks ) is an means of income in various forms. Something is needed to semi-protect individuals from unnecessary abuse, which newswire is addressing and hopefully will become default once the kinks are worked out.
How about locking user profiles ( comment history ) ?
"Before you can comment on a thread users must digg or bury the sub," -- effyochicken
Troublesome I agree, the alternative you suggested could be applied; however, I do not see any reason a person commenting on an article that they "read" being bothered by voting on it as well, maybe add an vote opt-out button ?. I do understand that some use digg as an traditional forum for casual conversations, I do. The general idea here is to gain a better understand as to "why" something occurs and hopefully curb/slow down some abuse.
"Do you honestly believe more than 10% of those 300 people have something good to add?" -- effyochicken
"..the utter lack of quality conversation in the comment section is an even bigger problem..." -- effyochicken
No arguments here !
"..I agree with the voluntary stats, creating a "bury list", and removing banned up/down votes..." -- effyochicken
This would be a great addition, we already have a dugg listing why not bury ? removing banned user +/- should have been implemented already.
I think the digg community would benefit greatly by an " system wide open transparency " opt-in. I have zero problem with my +/- votes being displayed, digg/bury, etc.
User "comment/spam filter " would be nice, something along the line of auto hiding abusive user comments...or similar approach.
Thank you for your civil response, suggestions and brain storming !

cdurukAug 10, 2011
I think requiring a comment to bury/digg a comment is an interesting idea but not sure how it'd work in real life -- there's some value in making voting as easy as possible but as said it comes at the price of spawning trolls.
I can't divulge into details too much but there's a lot of calculation and stuff that happens with banned users already.
comgenAug 11, 2011
"..there's some value in making voting as easy as possible but as said it comes at the price of spawning trolls..." -- cduruk
as effyochicken pointed out, several of my suggestions would increase DB/Server loads and obviously generate an excessive amount of posts. Far as ease of voting goes and trolls, listing of user activity per thread would be beneficial in determining why an event is occurring ( major digg/bury, comment +/-, etc ). I've put together an overview taken from various ideas posted on this subject by digg users......
Example:
Main Sub UI:
[1] Sub Dugg user list: already implemented
[2] Sub Bury user list: should have been included from day one.
[3] Users active on an sub: everyone else would be listed here ( comment vote only..etc.. )
In each stat view, include the number of comment +/- per user on said sub
[Submission stats]
Submission date/time
Dugg: 73
Bury: 21
Comments: 103
[Dugg]
comgen - +5 / -2
jane - +1 / -8
paul - +15 / -3
[Bury]
Jack - +0 / -17
Jill - +4 / -12
Harry - +1 / -1
[Other] - note: overall stats not per comment on thread, though it would be nice ;-)
frank - +15 / -15
moe - +12 / - 15
minime - +2 / -0
....
voluntary stats opt-in: system wide open transparency of all activity.
" I can't divulge into details too much but there's a lot of calculation and stuff that happens with banned users already. " -- cduruk
Good to know and completely understandable !
Thank you for taking time to reply and again great job coders and staff !

Thanks Digg for giving me access to Newswire over the last few weeks. It was alot of fun to play around with, and the features that come with it are AWESOME!
Now that it is open for everybody, the activity feed is almost too noisy for me. Is there a way we can filter the activity feed and see only what our digg friends are doing?
Before, I was able to check out the activity feed and find stories that Digg Staff & Users were digging and then check them out myself, and I probably would've have found those stories otherwise.. But now, it's just too much activity to even try to keep up with.
Either way, the new section is the most promising improvement to Digg that I've ever seen in my four years of being here. Good work guys!

Consider Newswire an experiment in regards to activity feeds. We'll definitely carry that paradigm forward and you'll see more specialized feeds in other places.
dajobeAug 8, 2011Staff
Pro Tip: Click on the topics bar at the top if you want to just see the newswire stories submitted in those sections. It also makes things change a little slower if you feel like the newswire is updating too fast.
dcjoedogv2Aug 8, 2011
I'm still waiting on a domain block option for the frontpage. we know what sites are SEO spam sites and if we could block them our experience would GREATLY become that much better because of it.

YO, dcjoe.. Your system hosts file can block sites you can't abide:

Change comes slowly, on the big things for a reason. Change your system first, others will agree, or not. Fixed for you either way. I think this is a winner.
da job. You've got the idea. Sadly Digg, Facebook, and YouTube are firewalled at work. A school. I find it sadly depressing.

We've been using this for some time inside Digg and I think it's quite addictive. We'll be interested to see what everyone else thinks so we can improve it.

I take that to mean, "Oh look, another way to take advantage of Digg."
If you meant it otherwise, sorry for pulling the trigger. Only you could be dugg down for a simple compliment for an actual improvement. I'ma go check to see if I was wrong now.
Don't get me wrong... Lotsa people love a system they can take advantage of. People who do just worry those of us who don't. We just like things that work doing what they do best. We honestly want the honest best effort for the best outcome. And to get PAID for the work. It's a very simple work ethic, for good or ill.
particleman420Aug 8, 2011
it seems like a pretty cool new feature. thats just what i need tho, something more addictive here ;)
i would give your comment a thumbs up, but I almost broke an axle
neondistractionAug 9, 2011
Seems like a nice feature, but I'd rather you guys fixed the way notifications link to specific comments. It's been broken for months now.
xraymasterAug 9, 2011
It was fixed recently...check again.
neondistractionAug 9, 2011
No, it wasn't, it's still broken For example, when I received a notification about this particular reply I clicked on it and instead of linking directly to the specific comment that was replied to, it just brought me to the top of the comment thread and left me to sort through the comments to find it. It's supposed to bring up the comment page and center it on the comment in question. It used to work, even before the notification system, but it just quit working a couple of months ago. I even e-mailed their support team to ask about it, and they told me they were aware of the issue and were working to resolve it. This was back in June. It still doesn't work.
anomaly100Aug 12, 2011
Same problem here. I have to sift through the comments, so when I'm too busy, many go unread unfortunately.
neondistractionAug 9, 2011
Never mind I was wrong, it appears that now the problem is with firefox. I just tried it with chrome and it worked just fine. Makes me wonder how long it's been fixed.
xraymasterAug 9, 2011
You should message them your Firefox version.
neondistractionAug 9, 2011
Actually it's not Firefox. When I pasted the link in Chrome it went straight to the comment like it should, so I assumed the problem was Firefox. But then I logged into my digg account in Chrome and it stopped working. So I went back to Firefox, logged out of my digg account, and pasted the link in the address bar and boom, it went straight to the specific comment like it should. I tried it several times between both browsers and with several different comments, and each time it only took me directly to the comment if I wasn't logged in, which makes no goddamn sense at all.

lethainAug 8, 2011StaffSubmitter
You can see buries in the Newswire, but not those done in other places. Diggs/buries impact the trending algorithm much more strongly in Newswire, so if you're willing to be transparent you get more impact.
casspaAug 8, 2011

arbiincAug 8, 2011
It's great that you can see buries in Newswire Activity Feed. Transparency is all that matters!
arbiincAug 8, 2011
Hey Lethain, why not have buries everywhere else? If we are talking about transparency, it will be beneficial to see the buries as well.
lethainAug 8, 2011StaffSubmitter
We wanted to start with a small experiment, see how everyone liked it, and try to understand how it changed the dynamics on Digg. A few small steps in the right direction go further than huge steps in wrong way. :)
arbiincAug 8, 2011
I totally agree. I must say you guys are doing a fantastic job implementing awesome features. One feature that I would like to see in the future is to see who gives thumbs up/down on comments.

How much of a difference is it if it just pops up in the sidebar that somebody buried a story?
Unless there's an actual record of buries like there is with digs nothing has really changed
xraymasterAug 9, 2011
Has this been implemented on the digg iphone app or is this just for the website?
Another thing I'd like to point out that the digg button doesn't work for me on the iPad 2.
lethainAug 9, 2011StaffSubmitter
We're going to bring it over to m.digg.com soon, and are likely to also bring it over to the existing phone apps.
The digg button is indeed screwed up on the ipad, but sitting in bed this weekend I found that if you hold down the digg button for half a second it works! No, that isn't a final solution, we're looking into it. :-)
comgenAug 11, 2011

"...The digg button is indeed screwed up on the ipad..." -- lethain
Similar issue on my Xoom and Galaxy both 10.1 tablets, current OS builds. Found viewing digg in full site/desktop view and pressing the lower edge of the digg/bury control works 95% of the time. Pressing the control elsewhere [ middle or top ] digg box blinks and resets to DIGG. There's also an annoyance burp when pressing the digg control...it sends me to the sub without digging the sub, pressing digg again repeats, after a few tries it'll digg the sub properly ( happens a few times a day ).

Diggers couldn't help but see it in the congress budget fiasco. I didn't capitalize that for a reason. Did capitalize Digg for a reason.
anomaly100Aug 8, 2011
Hi Lethain,
I'm with a few others here in hopes that diggs/*BURIES* <cough> will be more transparent sometime soon.
Question: Does a story have just as much of a chance to pop if it's submitted on Newswire as it does in using the alternative method?
Good job. I <3 it.
anomaly100Aug 8, 2011
Hey DP slackers, it took you 30 whole seconds to down vote my comment. Gosh guys, you're usually faster.
particleman420Aug 8, 2011
it was nice of them to give you an example as to why someone would want to know who's burying what!
anomaly100Aug 8, 2011
Yes I do appreciate that from them. It works every time.
I love when seeing a submission about puppies and comment, "Aww cute" and it gets dugg down in seconds.
rethreadAug 10, 2011
I watch you folks as a curiosity. A Particle Anomaly, as it were. Who's burying-buying what inherently creates conflict. Conflict inherently creates sides. Is that a worthy goal to achieve?
Because achievement accessed: US Government.
This perturbs me. But, thaz just me.
bukowskyAug 8, 2011
I could be wrong, as I have no knowledge of the true answer, but I don't believe you can submit something on Newswire. I believe you can still submit something per usual routine, but the Newswire section gives you different options on how to view/find stories on digg.

neondistractionAug 9, 2011
Nah, if you want your comment to sound like spam it has to be full of either broken english, horrible spelling/grammar, consist of no more than 2 or 3 words, and/or contain a link to a blog or a website selling something.
See the comment directly below yours for an example.

Ok a few things:
1. Awesome work guys. Perhaps the best news feed on the internet. Best combination of content feed (main page) and how the community is reacting to it (side bar right).
2. Why did it took so long?
3. I think if this does not take digg to where we were in 2009 I dont know what will.
4. The 'me too!' button... this was awesomeness! I kept doing 'me too for 10 mins! Very addictive indeed.
Great work guys.
cdurukAug 8, 2011
It admittedly took us a while to gain back our momentum but I think innovation wise, we are back on track.
Personal opinion here but I think Digg's future will have very little to do with its past and we'll only succeed if we can do things that others are not doing now or what we did before. Yeah, making upcoming real time with Newswire is simply catching up with the general trends but our innovation, I think, is that we have a "rated and curated" real time feed instead of just a meaningless feed.
The me-too button is a great experiment and I think it helps people being more active on the site by a lot. But it's really the tip of the iceberg. As the blog post mentions it a bit, some of the concepts on the newswire are things we just finished building and a lot of the innovation you see on Newswire will find its way to Digg in even more dramatic and exciting ways.
gameondiggerAug 8, 2011
well thats one of the major reasons why I never left digg. I am also an engineer by profession and so the switch to Cassandra was perfect. My only concern was what were you guys doing with it.
This Newswire will definitely find its way steaming ahead of other aggregators. I just hope, being the loyal digger I am for so many years, I hope digg returns to its glory days.
Even though I have no stake in digg, I am emotionally attached to it. I want to see it back as the number ONE social media site!

Buries should be transparent throughout the site in my opinion. The fiasco that happened previously does not need a replay although I am quite sure submissions are still buried by bury calls. Of course they'll just use alternate accounts to bury other viewpoints. Have you seen Olddog? Please do not make the mistake of becoming like that site. The digg patriots halted any traffic that site could have had from what I have heard. I'm sure they had something to do with people leaving before. I know I don't spend as much time here.
