$890 "possible" bucks for a 16GB Galaxy Tab? Suddenly, it doesn't seem all that great. :-)
absolutelytrueSep 8, 2010
No way. I'm excited about the Galaxy Tab but that's way too much when I already love iPad.
phillaholicSep 8, 2010
If they don't undercut the iPad it'll probably fail. And if Google doesn't get rid of it's 3G requirement for the Android Market, Android Tablets aren't going to do so well either.
badqatSep 8, 2010
I'm going to guess there will be carrier subsidies on the Galaxy Tab, and with all four major U.S. carriers, as well. My guess for price - $299.
superkendallSep 9, 2010
But the question is, will people really buy a tablet with a contract? Most people have to have a phone, while a tablet is extra...
orbital318Sep 9, 2010
Agreed. They tried this with netbooks and it didn't go far, hell they were giving them away for free with a contract.
bugmenot2Sep 8, 2010
Samsung said the US price may be $200 to $400.
I think the Galaxy Tab will be great, but I'm not getting one until it's updated with Gingerbread (Samsung said that a Gingerbread update is guaranteed). Android 2.2 isn't built with tablet support in mind; Android 3.0 is.
spuy767Sep 9, 2010
So what Samsung really said is that they're ass raping non-US markets to subsidize the cost of US units?
robdazombaSep 8, 2010
Ouch. Hello, Android tax. :^(
altanarSep 9, 2010
Care to elaborate? Android software itself is free for any company to use and implement.
darknightsSep 9, 2010
You're basing this on what? Oh right, a rumor. Stop talking until we have some actual facts.
boulderbumSep 8, 2010
I agree. Smaller screen + not as good app store = big disadvantage.
I also disagree somewhat with the Galaxy tablet winning for media support. Technically, it supports a broader number of formats, but it does NOT support Apple's format, which is currently the most popular.
Android has no movie rental service (yet), no TV show rental service, and most of the bigger name media streamers you'd want to use Flash for have an iPad app anyway, which is more ideal.
Also, Flash on Android is buggy and battery draining from what I understand.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
saintdesySep 9, 2010
Rentals?! Apple's format?! You sir, need Bittorrent.
phillaholicSep 14, 2010
You can't compare a legal service with an illegal one.

Flash works brilliantly on my Desire. Clearly it remains to be seen how well it'll do on a 7" screen, but I've had absolutely no issues with it at all. It's even nowhere near as bad on the battery life as you'd think since Froyo.
deathweaver108Sep 9, 2010
Flash works great on my droid. No more battery drain than watching a movie on it or, say, my ipod touch
phillaholicSep 14, 2010
I find that extremely hard to believe.
whitey22Sep 9, 2010
"Also, Flash on Android is buggy and battery draining from what I understand."
i.e.
"Also, Flash on Android is buggy and battery draining from what Steve Jobs tells me."
ianbell330Sep 8, 2010
I am glad its just a specs comparison. In a real hands-on comparison, I think the Galaxy could win.
Closed AccountSep 8, 2010
Apple fanbois seem to be burying your comment.
ianbell330Sep 8, 2010
I noticed that. I should have guess :)
phillaholicSep 8, 2010
You probably are getting dugg down because your saying a hands-on comparison would see the Galaxy as the winner when it's not out yet. All you have to compare on it ARE specs, and the few parts of the UI we've seen so far. I'm hoping that the Tab is as good as the iPad, and would be thrilled if it were better, but realistically it won't be until Android gets the game developers to really support their platform. And once again, if I have to buy this with 3G inflating the price, I won't be.
bonestampSep 8, 2010
I'd rather buy the Galaxy Tab. But, the iPad has one distinct advantage, it's actually available for sale.
akatoastSep 9, 2010
Where is the iPad available? most places are sold out.
smurfzSep 8, 2010
I like my ghetto iRobot Apad. Does what I need and was super cheap.

phillaholicSep 8, 2010
"It's just a big Galaxy S"
demdudeSep 9, 2010
That's exactly what I thought. Samsung have really dropped the ball when it comes to design, their "Vibrant" Galaxy S is a 1:1 reproduction of a 3G with a slightly modified back cover, the "Fascinate" is the same thing but with a darker chrome band on the front, and the Galaxy Tab looks like a weird mix of the iPhone 4 (hardly any rim on the front, metal-look band around the edges) and the 3GS (curved plastic back cover)...
Nobody could possibly argue that Samsung didn't blatantly copy from the iPhone here, it's just too obvious. And what's Samsung thinking here? I mean, I'd expect bad fakes from china to rip off the iPhone like that, but Samsung? What the f**k?
charlotte_webSep 8, 2010
Why does the Samsung Galaxy win on size by virtue of being smaller? I'd say the iPad wins for having a larger screen.
mistergoombaSep 8, 2010
I believe they meant to say "weight". They later say the iPad screen is more "generous"
boulderbumSep 8, 2010
Yes, but then doesn't the iPad Touch have them BOTH beat, by that logic? The whole point of the iPad is the larger screen.
boulderbumSep 8, 2010
Yes, but then doesn't the iPad Touch have them BOTH beat, by that logic? The whole point of the iPad is the larger screen.
nominalgeekSep 9, 2010
wtf is a ipad touch?
dcjoedogv2Sep 8, 2010
Which is why they gave the screen win to iPad while size(weight) went to the Galaxy.
autobulbSep 9, 2010
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They are incomparable. If you want a smaller device then the smaller/lighter device will win. Likewise if you want a larger screen. You can't compare them and say that the smaller device 'wins' on weight but the larger screen device 'wins' on screen size. It's pointless.
spuy767Sep 9, 2010
All of these online comparos are rigged to make them artificially close. They could have a shootout between a handful of s**t and the iPhone 4 and it would be a tie.
nubnubSep 9, 2010
The tab looks easier to hold as well.
Closed AccountSep 8, 2010
1) There's no source that says the Tab uses a TN panel
2) "I think we know which we would prefer to watch last week’s Mad Men on, thank you." Actually, if you are watching a 720p 16:9 file, the image would be resized to 1024x576 on both screens; with giant black bars on the iPad and almost no black bars on the Tab.
hipmanSep 8, 2010
Even if it were 1280x what's the point?.I wouldn't watch dvds on those tiny screens.
nullcodesSep 8, 2010
Hold the screen closer to your face for cinema experience.
hipmanSep 8, 2010
Great solution there.....
orbital318Sep 9, 2010
iPad is still bigger.
phillaholicSep 8, 2010
I'd be surprised if the Tab uses an IPS panel.
superkendallSep 8, 2010
But even with the black bars the iPad viewing area for the episode would be physically larger and have more resolution.
pifmanSep 9, 2010
I thought the same thing. Considering the average person will be doing other things more often than watching movies, it makes sense why they didn't make it 16:9. So just because you might watch some widescreen movies on there once in a while means you have to deal with a 16:9 ratio for every single thing you do on the Tab? No thanks.
fxspec06Sep 8, 2010
3) The screen on the iPad allows for better viewing angle

phillaholicSep 8, 2010
Samsung isn't a brand name?
theresaxoxo1Sep 8, 2010
awesome. I hope the competition will force competitors to lower their prices~
rothgarrSep 8, 2010
They're gonna have a problem if it's priced a penny more than the iPad. Anyone on the fence will get the iPad. Current Android users might get it since they likely have a library of Android apps they already paid for. But then again, if you've already got an Android phone, why would you buy something that's only slightly larger?
And even if they do sell if for cheaper through wireless plan subsidies, who wants to be locked into yet another plan? At least with the iPad you can get a 3G-less version. And even with the 3G iPad you can pay month-at-a-time with no contract. That's the model they're going to have to meet or beat.
twinklyjesusSep 8, 2010
nobody pays for android apps...it's not Apple.
nullcodesSep 8, 2010
They oughta enjoy these high prices while they can. Cause by 2015, equally capable (read: responsive and good enough) tablets will be widely available costing less than $100. Reason? LCDs are heading for a price collapse in 2012 (unrelated to the apocalypse).Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
nickedynickSep 8, 2010
Surely the Galaxy Tab wins with connectivity? Assuming of course that wifi tethering is left in by Samsung.
penguintopiaSep 8, 2010
Specs don't mean anything. Neither does marketing literature. When it hits the street, THEN we can decide if it beats the iPad. Until then, there is only the iPad....
orbital318Sep 9, 2010
If anything the iPhone has proven its all about the apps.
oncl0udnineSep 9, 2010
Now that is what I've been waiting for. I really hope the price isn't too steep.
captainm4dSep 9, 2010
This is a very misleading article. Digital Trends doesn't clarify whether or not they actually have the Tab (and I'm pretty sure they don't), but they compare it to the iPad as if they have both devices. As a result, it turns into a comparison of specs and personal experience, which makes this article extremely unbalanced.
saintdesySep 9, 2010
I was ready to buy one of these Galaxy Tab when I originally heard it was going to have a Super AMOLED. I would have paid the $1000, because it would have blown any other device out of the water on screen quality. Now, there is no way I'm getting one. It is an incredible disappointment to see an LCD on this thing. How they can release a whole line of devices with OLED and then just decide to go five steps backward on their "iPad killer".
superkendallSep 9, 2010
Those AMOLED screens are way overhyped. The colors are all wrong, and they are awful in the sun.
drjekelmrhydeSep 9, 2010
I thought the Samsung had a SAMOLED screen
mreclassSep 9, 2010
Don't compare until you actually have the unit, Digital Trends.
srodolffSep 9, 2010
This disturbs me. Samsung is offering this through carriers. What if I don't want 3G and just want wireless (like the iPad)? The carriers already take enough of my money.
skaargSep 9, 2010
I guess I'll just continue to sit here with Lenovo S10-3t netvertible...
10.1" touch screen (2 point touch)
Netbook keyboard or folds into a tablet.
250GB hard drive
6-10 hour battery life depending on current power setting.
Runs Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 flawlessly.
Guess what it was ONLY $450! Honestly if the tablet market wants to survive they really need to lower their prices. I couldn't be more happy with my choice.
the4thaggieSep 9, 2010
If only I could port Android 3.0 to IPad....
For my purposes, though, I think an IPad makes for a decent platform. The hardware is great. I am envious of all of my peers that have one. I can't see myself purchasing the Tab unless it competed with IPad off contract. I can't afford ANOTHER data plan. Wifi only model would be great.
My suggestion to anyone right now is to either get the IPad or wait for the next iteration to come out (thus allowing you to see what else is out or first impressions of the Tab). I'd like to see front-facing cameras on the iPad so I could either Facetime or Skype video (please put video in skype mobile app....)
w0lfcakeSep 9, 2010
Those idiots at that site don't get it yet: "How did Apple miss the boat on adding a camera to the iPad?". They didn't miss any f**king boat, it's just what Apple does, they let out a new product with the basic functionality, then in the next generation of there product they toss new s**t in. I can 100% guarantee you that in the next iPad generations we'll have a proper 16:9 widescreen, a camera, multi-tasking and more.

Last Year:
"Who needs a tablet?" "iPad will cost way too much!" "iPad will barely sell!" "No one needs a tablet for that much money!" "Just use a netbook!" "Tablets don't do anything my Laptop can't!"
This Year:
"OMG I LOVE THE SPECS ON ALL THE VAPORWARE ANDROID TABLETS!! I'M GOING TO BUY THREE! I CAN'T WAIT TO BE LOCKED INTO YET ANOTHER CONTRACT WITH THE WIRELESS CARRIERS!!!"
lol
nubnubSep 9, 2010
A lot of meaningless speculations. Didn't even deliver the specs as the title suggested. BURIED

Big touchscreen tablets are of no use for people with limited budgets and those who own an iPhone or Android based phones. I rather get an Asus Eee netbook running Ubuntu than paying $500 to get useless touchscreen tablets.
oldscotchSep 9, 2010
A comparison based on little more than speculation, or rather: click farming.
jsocontrer01Sep 9, 2010
Not really a fair comparison. The iPad has almost a year on most of the new tablets that are coming out.
3vnoSep 9, 2010
IMO I like the ipad's screen size and weight.
andrewe1Sep 9, 2010
*We certainly can’t muster much praise for Apple’s choice to marry the iPad to AT&T*
All 3G iPads are factory unlocked...shows how much the editor knows about what they are writing about...
