I love it when people know what to stand up for instead of rolling over and letting giants walk over them
supermosesAug 28, 2010
Two things happened in the last few days. Digg and Reddit got exposed for corporate pandering. Digg caved, Reddit fought back. In conclusion, Digg sucks.

You know I have seen quite a few "this account was closed" comments since the new digg rolled out. I wonder if they were just talking smack about the new digg and Kevin couldn't handle it. I didn't run into that very often before. . .
themapleboyAug 29, 2010
yup its censorship and i can't wait till my account is "closed" i've already abandoned ship

Everyone should boycott Digg on Monday.

It's not changing; a boycott is useless.
If you are unhappy, then go to Reddit or a similiar site. Problem solved.

atomic1fireAug 29, 2010
Im wondering if Reddit is doing this as a publicity stunt,
I mean ever consider that reddit is playing bad boy for viewership,
Digg is having some turmoil, and this would be the perfect time for reddit to be seen as the white knight in a marketing perspective.
Conde nast might not like it, but it's also possible this is all marketing fluff for the sake of making Reddit gain people, specifically the people up at arms about digg 4,
Reddit play's itself against corperate censorship, while the most of the users at digg are attacking anything remotely corperate, and Reddit's little war could be pretend to gain that vocal majority.
inaeldiAug 29, 2010
Reddit doesn't care about the ad revenue. That's Cond's job. Reddit is doing this because they believe in it and it's what the redditers wanted.

Reddit is different from Conde. Reddit is the soul of the site. Conde is the corporate overlord. Much like Digg's soul is corporate overlords and its corporate overlords are corporate overlords.

Kevin Rose didn't let anyone "walk" all over him, this was always his dream. Sell out and make a boat load of money. Mission accomplished. Join him or leave this crap hole for reddit or a different aggregator. Let Digg die.

If you don't want to use Reddit because you think it's ugly, there's plenty of userstyles to change the look of it. If you want it to look like old Digg, install Reddit, Diggit. If you know CSS, you can just style it to look however you want.
sageerrantAug 28, 2010
This is definitely the not-so-secret secret to using Reddit. Without any styles applied to it, it's functional though eye-hemorrhaging. Then you realize that a sizable chunk of Reddit never actually sees it that way. The bare-bones default presentation just makes it easier to convert it to something you like. You could argue that it's bad practice to make a site that is best viewed through a couple of filters, but keep Reddit's audience in mind, and it's not unreasonable to expect the user to take care of a few things.
shortiesAug 28, 2010
I actually don't think it's ugly, its nice that its so resource friendly, loads fast and clean on any machine.

Although I must say I love the default style for Reddit. Clean, simple, to the point. I'm not there to look at the site anyways, but rather the pictures/news/comments, and that style is perfect for such content.
bratterscainAug 29, 2010
There goes the neighborhood.
x9002Aug 29, 2010
The best way to boycott digg is to stop using it. I'm not even going to bother with reddit cause the site is so damn ugly and if digg user comments were stupid then reddit's are pants on head retarded. It was fun but the party is over, time to let go and move on

I didn't want to go to Reddit either. It seemed like a nice place, but the timing of all this Prop 19 stuff going down has killed my buzz.
Smoke a double-rainbow, dude. Fight the power.
crazyredivanAug 28, 2010
I avoided Reddit, but on Thursday I caved and made an account.
1) they stand up to their corporate masters, as per the article.
2) they don't take bulls**t from jackass posters, like Digg somehow let the DP and bury brigades take over
3) they don't take anything too seriously. As someone who got in many a heated political Digg debate, I am just as guilty as the next person. But this is the f**king internet- Nothing we say about s**t on here matters to the powers that run the world. Reddit has fun, and doesn't let stupid partisan crap take over.
Now I just use Digg to voice my displeasure over digg. It's cathartic.

doctordbxAug 28, 2010
Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. Every single story in my Top News is posted by the website it links to.
sanchomandovalAug 28, 2010
Well hey, Digg figured that since we came here for user-submitted stories what we would really like is a new system where only stories where 8 or 9 publishers could ever be front paged. Logical, huh?
theavenger3Aug 28, 2010
Digg figured out that it made no money from user-submitted stories.
Now it gets loads of money from these publishers in order to place their stories on the front page.
It kind of is logical when you think about it.
bahawkidAug 29, 2010
if they want money. why not a donate button on the side or why wont they just add a publishers tab on the old digg?

Hey guys! Remember when Digg tried to censor the HD-DVD encryption key back in 2007?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AACS_encryption_ke...
Remember how they'd delete stories containing the key and ban people who posted it?
http://www.wired.com/underwire/2007/05/blogger_...
Remember how everybody got so pissed off that the entire front page became full of stories talking about the key and slagging the site?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ae/H...
And remember how Kevin Rose finally backed off, publishing a blog post with the AACS key in the title (which became one of the most highly-dugg stories ever), asking for forgiveness and saying things like:
"[A]fter seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be."
http://about.digg.com/blog/digg-09-f9-11-02-9d-...
Yeah. The same thing is happening now. While the front page is showing(just about only) day-old (or older) stories from Engadget and Mashable with 50 or 80 diggs, this 18-hour-old story clearly outlining all the problems with the new site has nearly 900 diggs and isn't popular yet:
http://digg.com/news/technology/dear_kevin_rose_2
This one has nearly 1,300 diggs and is likewise suppressed:
http://digg.com/news/worldnews/rip_digg_com
Why is Digg censoring content once again? Why is the same guy who humbly apologized for trying to silence the community now approving that same censorship once again? Does the community no longer have any say in what appears on the site? What happened? Join me and fight for user driven content! Fight for our digg!!

You know what sucks more than the new Digg? People petitioning for legalizing weed so they can get high and do nothing with their lives.
charlie6969Aug 29, 2010
Most people petition for legalizing weed do it because they are tired of rapists going free to make room for non-violent users of marijuana. Because the USA has a bigger percentage of its citizens in jail than ANY other country, mostly because of non-violent " crime", ie. smoking marijuana. Frankly, it's a Civil Rights issue. With alcohol and cigarettes being legal it is scientifically unsound to criminalize marijuana, not to mention the last 70 years has taught us that prohibition is a lose/lose situation.
Why am I wasting my time? Go drink your beer and have a cig. Just don't fall off that high horse; you might hurt yourself.

how can you get banned from Digg?......Digg hires pedophiles who smoke crack and loiter
asterix299Aug 29, 2010
I honestly think that this new system is just bugging out. They can't possibly think that the digg community would take kindly to nothing but ads on the front page. Perhaps there is just an algorithm that has not been properly administered and is favoring the paid advertisements. It is true, however, that this buggy system is displeasing compared to what it was. Give the people at digg time to fix this or decide that they made a mistake. At this point, they surely realize that the site will not do well in its current state.
Don't just be fair weather fans of Digg, have faith.

Guys I hate to say it, but it seems like Reddit seems to be where the true spirit o fDigg now lies. Kevin Rose wanted to turn us into nothing but a corporate advertisement feed and it seems he's succeeded. I have been reluctant to even try Reddit because their page layout looks to me as if it was designed by the Craigslist team, but I started an account today and it's really does feel like being home again. I used to go onto Digg for hours to look at new and interesting stories, I never logged in, never made an account becuase I didn't need to....Now wiwth V4 all I get is spammed articles from websites I never visit, I want the unique submissions, the bury brigade, the lefties and right wingers back. It was crazy as hell but us lurkers could sit on this site for hours and read the comment sections of political stories and awe at all the bitching, mudslinging that was going on, but now there is NONE of that. DIGG has lost it's identity, sure they are prolly making more $$$$ now, but once you alienate your userbase it starts going downhill from there.
