As has been shown many, many times, An IP address does not identify the person using the IP. And there are many an innocent IP(person) being watched(logged) right now to see if their data stream is in need for further watching.
[sarcasm] And all you people using encrypted proxy's are the biggest bunch of evil mofo's on this planet. What evil are you hiding? [/sarcasm]
Encrypt the Internet and keep Corporations out of our Data Streams.
QuinnWolfJul 31, 2011
Correct. and 999 of those IP addresses will be traced back to cyber-cafes or people who didn't know how to secure their wi-fi connection.
sanitysJul 31, 2011Submitter
sadly that will probably be true
QuinnWolfJul 31, 2011
Before wi-fi internet, tracking an IP address to an ISP was pretty much cut and dried. I used to work for a dial-up ISP (back in the 90s) and every few months we had the feds come in and ask for records, no big deal.
These days, when I'm on my boat, (i hate to admit it) but I use any open wi-fi I can find. Marinas are a goldmine. For that matter, so is any downtown metropolitan business district. Of course, I'm not doing dirty deeds on someone elses wi-fi account but the fact remains,.there are a lot more open wi-fis out there than encrypted systems.
At home, I do leave my wi-fi open as do my neighbors so we can all access the internet in case one of our providers are down.
...but nothing beats the time my wife caught a city worker jerking off in his city paid for truck to porn while exploiting our open wi-fi. She called me to come look and once I saw what he was doing in front of my house, I went out and confronted him. You should have seen the look on the guys face when I went out and BUSTED him red-handed.

more like WHITE-handed. AMIRITE?
TheMightyZordonAug 1, 2011
Guess he won't be so c**ky with people's wi-fi in the future, right?
meccaydnaAug 1, 2011
My neighbor's network password seems to be "password". Sadly I don't feel guilty for trying that random combination of letters...luckily I'm not performing illicit acts.

As has been shown many times, you are a simple minded dumb f**k. When you have 1000 IP addresses, chances are VERY good that you can use them as a starting point for an investigation.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Have you not been following the news? Anonymous members have been dropping like flies. DOZENS have been arrested already.
It is sad that you are so delusional and pathetic that you see these children as some sort of genius heroes who are always one step ahead of "the man" but the fact remains is their lives have been ruined FAR more than they have ruined ANYONE'S life.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

... are you f**king stupid, or something?
He has given no indication towards his support or lack thereof of Anonymous, he's just saying the obvious: That the possibility that those being infected is there, granted he did so in an assuming manner.

It's funny that people knock Paypal for cooperating with the law and all of the "keep corps out of our data streams" and yet they feel it's acceptable to attack a corporation exercising their right to not do business with, say, Wikileaks.
It's a double standard, if you want to keep corporations out of the internet I say fine (rather I support that notion completely), however I think that the internet has no right in attacking businesses who choose to cease doing business with any other entity. It's their right to choose who they want to associate with and no one has any right to tell them otherwise. Doing so makes you act like the very corporations/governments you're trying to fight. Choice is a freedom that all should enjoy.
QuinnWolfJul 31, 2011
After all, this is Paypal we're talking about. Ebay/Paypal is hardly the most respectable, honest and technologically competent company on the internet. In fact, eBay/Paypal are probably the scammiest company on the internet.
Maybe Paypal should think twice before they freeze people's accounts and hold their funds for 180 days without any rhyme or reason.
mlw4428Jul 31, 2011
Again, when you choose to do business with paypal you're made aware that this is something they can do, have done, and may do in the future.
It's like getting mad at two guys playing Russian Roulette and one person blows his brains out. It was gonna happen eventually...why be shocked?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
QuinnWolfJul 31, 2011
Please show me where it says in big bold print that Paypal has the right to freeze an account and collect interest on funds for 180 days?
Most people don't read a 10 page TOS and all it's fine print when signing up to use their service.
Furthermore, to arbitrarily freeze someone's funds without any type of investigation or any type of explaination regarding the case is borderline criminal.
Anybody remember Paypal freezing $20K in the Red Cross's donation account post Katrina?
laurahoustonJul 31, 2011
you're right it's in little tiny, tiny print in the aggreement.
even your personal banks funds can be frozen or taken from you. ask the irs about that or read your banks tos.
QuinnWolfJul 31, 2011
In all honesty, Paypal has gotten a little better since the Red Cross fiasco and I'm hearing less about unwarranted account freezes but it still doesn't change the fact that Paypal and eBay are totally dishonest companies who will grab any coin they see fit.
It's a shame Paypal just avoided being regulated as a banking institution. They need regulation, just like any other bank, credit or debit card issuer, etc..
Paypal are a slippery, slimy bunch and you should never trust any funds you have in your Paypal account, or give them access to your bank account or credit cards. Trust me, I learned the hard way back in 2004 (to the tune of $26K) and although my account was re-instated, got my funds back, these days I use Paypal for low level transactions andI withdraw any funds immediately.
mlw4428Jul 31, 2011
An agreement is an agreement. As you stated, it's not like they haven't done it before. Wikileaks is younger than the Paypal problems.
Should I feel bad for the guys who sit down at the Russian Roulette table after watching two guys playing it (one blowing his brains out) and start playing it too?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
QuinnWolfJul 31, 2011
Obviously you have no experience in the field of law because an agreement that violates the law is not an agreement that will hold up in court.
Any company can put whatever they want in their TOS but if they are operating nationally or worldwide they have to deal with laws in each jurisdiction.
I sued Paypal and won. So have a lot of other people.
laurahoustonJul 31, 2011
That was a lot of $ to have frozen, good thing you got it back. I didn't know they weren't regulated as a bank. thank you for the tips.
immunofortAug 1, 2011
From the Paypal TOS
" if an investigation is pending at the time you close your account, PayPal may continue to hold your funds for up to 180 days as appropriate to protect PayPal against the risk of reversals"
It's not paypals fault that people don't read the ToS.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Anonymous is gorilla warfare. Not likely they will go away because of a few arrests. Every movement has it's martyrs
TheMightyZordonAug 1, 2011
Gorilla warfare? Does that include Tarzan yells and chest-thumping?
Or did you mean to say 'guerrilla warfare'? :P
skinturtleAug 2, 2011
Yes it does mean Tarzan having having a part in this. There definitely is much chest thumping involved when you really think about it.

Helpful!
Though I don't think it will matter.
If they are half as talented as I think they are, They can make the attacks look like they're coming from anywhere!
They could find out which feds are leading the investigation and make it seem like the attacks are coming from their home or office address.
gailkimJul 31, 2011
More like, look out Paypal
Billy_JackJul 31, 2011
I have mixed feelings about this...I use PayPal for my online business, if this Anonymous caused an outage that affected sales for my business that makes me upset...On the other hand, I feel people could be wrongly persecuted simply because of an IP address that may or may not have been used to do something bad...Even if the outage, didn't affect sales for my business directly, it makes potential customers wary about making a purchase online when they read about something like this, even though it wouldn't have affected them, it has enough potential to create distrust in the mind of a customer that may already be leery of using a credit card or PayPal online...
youareitzJul 31, 2011
I feel like Anonymous will be putting PayPal on their list of future sites to attack now.
Can't wait to see what goes down.
