mashable.com — In the debate between the old version of Digg and the new Digg, the readers have spoken.Last week, Digg launched version 4.0 of the popular social news website. Its been a rocky road pre-launch, so why would it be any different post-launch?Since the launch of the New Digg, which introduced the ability to follow friends, a faster architecture and personalized news, users have been in revolt, mostly over the types of stories reaching the front page. Digg has since addressed some of these issues, but the debate rages on.Last week we asked you, the Mashable readers, for your opinion on Digg. Which did you prefer: The new digg or the old one?The old version of Digg was clearly your choice. With a full 78% of the vote (4,808 votes), the classic version bested the new versions 12% (747 votes). Four percent of you (230 votes) said it was a tie, while 6% of you (348 votes) said you werent a fan of Digg.In the comments, the debate surrounded features that were available in the old version that werent in the new one, including the ability to bury stories and the ability to check upcoming stories. Many of you were also quick to point out that the new Digg is designed to broaden the appeal of the social news website, rather than limit it to its current niche of tech-savvy users. Were going to revisit this debate in the future, when weve had time to reflect on the changes happening at Digg. In the meantime though, we want to hear your thoughts on this debate in the comments. The whole thing egan when mashable spammed the front page the first day. And you want us to give them MORE page views?
daridaveSep 2, 2010
I just came back from vacation (well, a few days ago), and I missed the launch. I'm using it as-is right now, and to be honest, I HATE the new Digg. It gives me NOTHING of what I want, even after I set up my followings & all that wanna-be-cool-and-modern crap.
Yes, the whole "social networking" vibe is in full force these days, but when I visit digg, I want news. I don't want friends. I've got enough different friend lists every where else on the Internet, and I really don't like to mix it into "tech news".
Anyway... it won't go away. I understand the concept, I just think it's all a gimmick.
waiting2awakeSep 2, 2010
It will go away, the only question is how it will go away.
choices:
1 - No comes to digg anymore, and the site fades into oblivion. Thus it goes away.
2 - The digg admins come to their senses, revert back to the old digg, and thus this new P.O.S goes away.
It will depend on whether they want their site or not.

It will not revert back to the old Digg. IT can't. There are contracts that must be adhered to now.
kevroSep 2, 2010
I was on Digg when it went down and came back up as V4. I was desperately looking for a revert to old digg button. I tried the Beta and I reverted back with in 10 minutes. Now where forced here, I started a Reddit account the same day.
waiting2awakeSep 2, 2010
I joined both digg and reddit back in 06 I think. I however always stayed a digg user. I loved the back and forth in politics. Since this "upgrade", I think this is my third trip back, having spent what I used to spend on digg, on reddit. I am getting more used to it, and spending less time on digg. Judging by this article, I am not alone.
The only question is whether Digg higher ups are smart enough to stop this fiasco before they lose all their long time users.
tcquadSep 2, 2010
To be fair, people tend to hate new things that completely revamp the experience but it's rarely a deathknell (see: Facebook). The Digg admins are probably thinking they can weather the storm and people will get used to it. However, they're ignoring the fact that this change hasn't just altered the "experience", it completely destroyed the quality. I come to digg and see a blank screen saying "you haven't added any feeds". That can't be considered "good design". Sure, I can add feeds, but it separates "stuff I like" from "stuff I might like but I've never heard of the site before". It's horrible, poor implementation that feels like (and probably is) a site designed by a committee that said "ooh, we can add friends, people like friends, right?" without thinking through how that process would work.
Besides this comment (I came to digg when I hit an old bookmark accidentally, saw the story and felt compelled to rant) and one day when I spitefully dugg about a dozen posts from reddit, I haven't been here and I haven't missed it (though I did manage to get 7 followers, WTF?). From my perspective, that's a sign that I'm done with digg. Sorry, guys.
(Edit: also, the submit button looks like you copy/pasted Facebook's button. That just ticks me off even more.)

@CharAbel
Well that's basically the biggest problem with the new digg. The point of digg was that the *users* decided what made the front page. I'm looking at the front page and honestly digg has now become a glorified rss reader. I've opened a reddit account a few days ago and use the digg skin http://userstyles.org/styles/35197 on it. I just peruse around digg (with ad block on, no sense them getting any ad revenue) to laugh at the continued clusterf**k.

elmuerte17Sep 2, 2010
Honestly, all other issues aside, the biggest complaint I have with new Digg is the huge lack of content showing up. Old Digg I could read everything, come back in an hour and there'd be a whole page of new stuff. Now there'll be like, two new articles on the frontpage in three hours.
zebragrrlSep 2, 2010
My interface for Digg was the Google-Homepage widget. I've got my iGoogle homepage set up like a 3 column newspaper, with various headlines, rss news feeds, Woot.com's item of the day, and of course, in my "news of the weird" column, Digg. With the Digg widget, I could browse the latest posts in news, videos, and images.. and it was usually good for a 15 minute diversion, popping open several firefox tabs worth of interesting looking things.
But the way the widget looks now, it won't be worth squat. I already subscribe to the RSS feeds that Digg now coalesces into "My News", so that tab is useless.. and at least currently, the only other tab "Top News" is full or redirects to reddit. Which is a neat protest I guess, but it's making me not want to view Digg at all.
I'm honestly considering ditching the widget entirely, and giving the space to something more useful. Or at least something more entertaining. The downside is that it will mean not visiting Digg anymore.
philipz78Sep 2, 2010
The whole point of the protest is that that's all the disenfranchised can do. We know reddit is benefiting from this, but it's better than Mashable or Leo Laporte. At least with reddit, users still have an indirect way of getting their content on digg's front page.
AmyLSep 2, 2010
I use the google widget too and it is pretty useless now. I really liked being able to search by news, video, and images. If I had a few minutes to spare I could check a couple of images. If I had more time I could catch a video or a few news articles. Now I have to click on a story, click the headline to go to reddit, click again to read the story there. I am also not thrilled that my old digg account poofed away and I had to start all over.
duihomerSep 2, 2010
I have a similar setup. I simply minimized the Digg widget (I'm not quite ready to delete the widget altogether..., yet). and added a Reddit RSS feed on my iGoogle page. Not quite the same, but it helps with my news withdrawal... Although, I just peeked in the widget, and noticed that for the first time since Dv4 launch, the widget is showing new activity again.
tenarethSep 2, 2010
The front page wastes the left side on that stupid navigation section, I want more stories and easy to read summaries, the navigation was great where it was (out of the way).

identityamethSep 2, 2010
new is usually unpopular, I like really like some of the components of the new Digg. I feel they should have kept certain features of the old. That actually might make everyone happy. Specifically the new Digg is faster buut it doesn't have mutual friends but perhaps more importantly it should have kept submissions and popularized. Experinced digg users must have slaved away digging to get such status.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
batonryeSep 2, 2010
As a software developer, if you listen to too many suggestions, and try to incorporate too many features, you end up with this mass of duct tape to no one really likes. Kevin is a smart guy, and he has some great vision.
I agree. There are some neat ideas in the new site. We should give the new site a fair shot, but also be helpful and offer criticism where due and let them decide the ultimate direction. Being a spammmer or playing the martyr card really helps no one.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
blackinthmiddleSep 2, 2010
"I like really like some of the components of the new Digg."
Like which ones, exactly? The fact that large news outlets can now auto spam the front page all day long? Forget about thumbs versus arrows. There are some fundamentally flawed changes about digg. From my point of view major news outlets can now spam the site with the new submission process - Look at any description of digg and you generally see "user-generated content". The front page right now has stories from:
o Mashable
o Engadget
o Engadget (again)
o Techcrunch
o gawker
o Engadget (are you kidding me?)
o Engadget (seriously, should we just change the name of digg.com to Engadget?)
o Yahoo.com news
o reddit (how embarrassing)
o Techcrunch
o ecomagination
o latimes
o theonion
o pcmag
o arstechnica
o wired
Seriously, how is this any different than a glorified rss reader?
alexbarnes94Sep 2, 2010
When people who don't know what's going on ask me about what Digg did to make everyone upset, I tell them that Kevin decided he'd rather compete against Google Reader than against reddit. Sadly, it's essentially true.
batonryeSep 2, 2010
How can anyone reasonably compare the two yet? The new site has barely got on it's feet, and has been crippled by a spam overflow so no one has really even got to use it yet.
It's like the community was given a shiny new car for a test drive, albeit the car had a a few loose parts, missing radio, and broken A/C, and instead of test driving the car we all just beat the s**t out of it with baseball bats and returned it to the dealer to complain.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

A couple of loose parts? Seriously, go to the front page and click on the comments of *any* news story. Were you able to get here on the first click? No? Didn't think so. I'm f**king *shocked* that digg.com put this s**t out and claimed that they actually tested it. I'm a web developer and understand bugs will always slip through. However, this site is an abomination. A couple of loose parts? To give you an idea of how much of a clusterf**k the current digg is, I tried to submit a comment and got one of those red "you got an error, if this is a bug, report it". I clicked on the link and got another error while trying to tell digg about the first error I saw!
Look, forget the errors. I assume they'll be fixed...eventually. Forget the reddit spam. That's digg users doing the only thing they can because Kevin Rose clearly doesn't give a s**t what his users think. But as I see it right now, I don't see a single article on the front page that's actually submitted by a user. Digg is now a glorified rss reader. I've seen enough. I can make the comparison.
batonryeSep 2, 2010
The orange url preceding the descriptions on the homepage is the source website, not the submitter. If you click through to comments you'll find that most (almost all actually) were user submitted. Yes, even the Mashable story is submitted by a normal user, not the mashable feed.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

So far, I've been able to use the new Digg daily. That is not something I could do with the old Digg. I waited patiently for years to be able to "easily" choose who I follow and to keep my opening page clean and free of the crap I am simply not interested in.

Odd, isn't it, when you start looking at the ones after the first 5k or so, and seeing who *they* follow. Oh you gotta digg...
davidtcSep 2, 2010
You looked through more than 5k of their followers when Digg only loads up about 10 followers everytime you click load more? Talk about having way too much time on your hands
I'm not sure what I am supposed to be looking at cause I'm not going to click the load more button over 500 times for each profile you mentioned, let along one profile. I doubt the 28 people that dugg you up did either.
dooplissSep 2, 2010
Did it also show how mature Digg users really are at the same time?
alexbarnes94Sep 2, 2010
Mashable auto-RSS submit spam, but it's an anti-Digg v4 article! WHAT DO???
roxgod666Sep 2, 2010
That would be hilarious if all the auto-RSS spam was against v4 so they couldn't censor.
alexbarnes94Sep 2, 2010
Result: I decided that I wouldn't do anything to this story at all. The past few days, I've been digging up all the Reddit stories (along with everyone else as a demonstration of what we wish Digg would change back into) and reporting and hiding all of the auto-submitted spam crap that Kevin dumped on us. I know that's probably some misuse of those functions, but without a Bury button I couldn't figure out what to do with all those Mashable and TechCrunch things. "Report and hide" has kind of replaced "bury", which is really sad for everyone involved.

This was interesting, because we all knew this in the back of our minds, but it was cool to see the numbers.
I think Digg should have progressed to Digg v 3.5, with some substantial smaller add on's happening slower.
It was also interesting to see how quickly, we as the community of Digg turned against it.

The old digg was about user submitted content... The new digg is about publisher submitted content.
A heap of changes (including removing / changing functionality) seem to be to accomadate the new publisher focused digg - This alone is the reason I hate it.
Digg built a huge userbase which was built around the users (we submitted, we commented, and we made the site what it was - it grew because of the users) - and once it got large and popular enough, digg sold us out to the publishers - then they expect us to stay and be happy about it? Screw digg...

As supposedly bad as Digg v4 is, maybe it's not that bad. I'm not following the major news outlets, I think that's lame.

We don't hate change, we hate a s**t website.
This version has destroyed the fundamental premise of digg: community generated and determined content.
To make it worse, it's been launched with a multitude of technical failures that are just amateurish.
manstein01Sep 2, 2010
Thank you, basically a paid for RSS feed is only half of it. Even if it was still community generated content, the new Digg is so broken that it is pretty much unusable. I don't even know why I still come, I guess because I cannot take my eyes away from a train wreck.
waiting2awakeSep 2, 2010
"I don't even know why I still come,"
I keep popping in due to loyalty. Something the Digg-Bosses know very little about apparently.
cawpinSep 2, 2010
"Thank you, basically a paid for RSS feed is only half of it."
You pay for Digg access? No? Didn't think so. No publisher is paying, or being paid, to be on Digg.
blackinthmiddleSep 2, 2010
Bingo. And just a few more thoughts:
o Almost impossible to follow your own comments or anybody else's comments. The whole point of digg was that we *were* a community. If I make a f**king comment, I want to know how it was perceived. It's one of the main points of the site. Make a comment, get some feedback, respond, repeat. Now, it's make a comment and struggle to find it later on.
o No bury button - Again, the whole "user generated content" concept going by the wayside.
o No way to determine when and/or if a story you're looking at ever made the front page - Why on earth was this removed?
o My news - Please, replace this garbage with the upcoming stories we used to have. I want to see every story in every topic and digg up the stories I want making it to the front page. I don't want to have a sliver of all upcoming stories.
o No more pagination on the home page - hate the odd "load more stories" action.
hokie47Sep 2, 2010
I was a Digg beta tester a few months ago. I told digg that the new site will suck hard, and don't do it, but they did it anyway. Digg forgot the most important rule in marketing. Give your customers what they want, but instead they gave what their advertisers want.
philipz78Sep 2, 2010

pyroclastic_vikingSep 2, 2010
Here is a radical idea, if you don't like it, leave. Comming back to digg articles and drive traffic is only going to help the new digg. Then, while you are gone I will enjoy digg again like it was 2006. A time where I could actually get articles on the front page without servicing power users.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
pyroclastic_vikingSep 2, 2010
BTW, the new digg won't change be cause it can't. The Cassandra backend everyone used to paise won't allow it. The only thing that you can do is move forward and fix the current issues and bring some of the popular features that were lots (which digg is doing).
Personally, I'd rather follow the content owners then power users who are likly getting paid to boost the story. I welcome giving the power back to the content owners.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dvsbastardSep 2, 2010
I hated the concept of powerusers as much as the next guy... But at least to become a poweruser you had to appease the userbase to some extent (by inserting random, funny and interesting articles amongst your spam)...
Now we have publishers, which are powerusers that only submit their own crap, and don't even attempt to serve the community (although they do serve the financial interests of Digg). What we have now in infinitely worse than before...
If a poweruser attempted the same approach that the publishers are using now (posting only self serving articles), they would be buried into oblivion so fast they wouldn't know what hit them...
genadySep 2, 2010
Ummm.... riiiiiight.. I prefer the non-MrBabyMan version of Digg thankyouverymuch.

Here's a poll I'd like to see: Do you think there's a chance in hell Digg will go back to the old version?
#1 No way
#2 Revert to v3
#3 Create a hybrid of v3 and v4
I say it's "no way"...I'll bet $1 that the last round of funding that Digg got was predicated upon them doing something like this, where content publishers would have a quid pro quo with Digg for money. Either they CAN'T go back because the investors won't allow it, or worse, they're in contract with some of these sites to push their content on some sort of pay for play basis.

Worse?.They sold out either way.

Or worse yet, they released the software WAAAAAYYYYYYY tooo early. Which created s**tty effects that everyone assumes is malice on Diggs part. Have we learned nothing from Hanlon's razor?
gbates31Sep 2, 2010
The advertisers/financial backers are in the same bind: if the site stays at v4 and the departure of the v3 fan base isn't replaced with new blood, then they run the risk of losing their investment. I think the corps' will give in.
blackinthmiddleSep 2, 2010
The funny thing is, once they drive all of their users away (ever since the update, I've turned ad block on for digg.com, so it's even worse because I'm hitting their servers and not giving back ad impressions). the same publishers that they've whored themselves out to will run, realizing they've royally screwed the site.

Sort of. the last round of funding was two years ago. It only succeeded because there were (false) rumors of major companies like Google being interested in buying it. But yeah, that is why these changes are being made. Not for the LAST round of funding, but looking forward to their next hat in hand beg fest.
No one is going to keep throwing good money after bad on a 6 year old site that shows absolutely NO sign of knowing how to be profitable.
This won't help though.

Kill new digg , Bring Back Old Gold Digg.....................................................................................................................................

In 5 years i have never checked out Reddit, until today...and now it has replaced my Digg bookmark.
linuxdaemonSep 2, 2010
It seems most of the "top news" stories are from reddit anyway, so you can just use digg as your reddit aggregator.
mysedaiSep 2, 2010
Ages and aesons ago, I tried reddit, and it made my eyes bleed. Then, the onslaught of reddit fanboys spamming digg made me hate the site with a burning passion... Now, I feel like the reward for my loyalty is a site that is completely useless to me, and, even more insultingly, pushes reddit stories down my throat.
Digg... Why hast thou forsaken me?
wearedejavoodooSep 2, 2010
Makes the Reddit UI look very Digg-like: http://userstyles.org/styles/35197
Since a made a Reddit account a few days ago I've actually found the dicussions in the comments to be quite civilised and informative. There's some really good debate there.
And are you talking about the recent spamming of Reddit stories on Digg? I think you'll find that was pissed off Digg users trying to make a point.

I hate the New Digg!!! Cannot find anything I had saved. I guess they cleaned out all of our personal settings and articles.
Very BAD Digg!!!!!
Guess I will spend more time with Reddit now.

um... A/B testing smooths out the cracks. It won't fix the current problem they are in.

I like the old digg better only b/c now all I get is redirected to reddit. To be completely honest I like the new digg's set up a lot better...I just wish the stories would stay the same as old digg
bokono37Sep 2, 2010
This place is so sad now. Nothing is moving on the front page and nothing ever ads right.
maniacaltobySep 2, 2010
Digg team get off your f**king asses. Its been a week now and we still have the same glitchy piece of corporate s**te.
Buck up you f**k ups.

They are busy wiping Kevin Rose's jizz off their chin
diggblowsgoatsSep 2, 2010
Kevin Rose has always been such a f**king jack ass. I knew from the moment I saw that retard, Alex Albrecht, on diggnation that this place was f**ked. Kevin is a worthless Apple fanboy shill. Alex is... well... just retarded. Happy, yet sad to see this place fall apart.
Closed AccountSep 2, 2010
Alex, imo, seems pretty cool, although a little over the top sometimes on diggnation, but on TRS he's cool. Kevin has turned into a bit of a douchebag though.
storylineheroSep 2, 2010
I was going go through all my history to remember the old digg... oh wait they took away most of your history and favorites...

New digg sucks a bag full of smaller bags of dicks. It's like a Russian doll of bagged dicks.
mysedaiSep 2, 2010
The idea of nesting dolls made of bags of dicks made me laugh so hard I choked. I'm very glad to be in master control right now, and not allowed to have a drink, or it surely would have been decorating all the monitors and switchers in front of me.
neptunesbloodSep 2, 2010
Where are all the new stories. Since yesterday there has been hardly any. Not like the good old days of DIGG..
waiting2awakeSep 2, 2010
submitters are such an important part of a user generated site. Since Digg pissed on the users though - why bother even submitting?
doublehueSep 2, 2010
Hate new digg so much I got a stumbleupon and have been using that ever since. I just came on here now to read y'alls comments about how you hate the new digg :p
intenseblogSep 2, 2010
I love a new diff design, it's very creative
jstraskSep 2, 2010
A few days ago mashable had an 'article' on digg's front page that was nothing more than a note thanking their advertisers and offering different, exciting ways to advertise with them.
f**k you mashable, and your auto-submitted junk.
(I still haven't gotten over that one)
themachine1Sep 2, 2010
A website with a large user base needs to make most changes to their site optional. Digg changed too much and without any options to go back.

Thanks to all the reddit posts about user themes from Stylish. I've now migrated
kb7735Sep 2, 2010
Make sure you edit (+frontpage, -frontpage) the list of reddits/categories that'll appear on your front page. That's some cool s**t that digg ain't got. I guess "following" is digg's new solution for that, which I don't care in the least for.
phuzi0nSep 2, 2010
Digg v4 ruins the site with RSS feeds -> RSS feeds submit stories like this about Digg v4 being ruined -> Digg v4 fills with RSS fed stories about its own demise
irvin666Sep 2, 2010
Kevin, just admit that mashable paid you.
bigviSep 2, 2010
Did they really think that removing a bunch of features would be seen as a positive move?
For me the lack of being able to just look at vids and pics was a huge loss. I work at night, what am I supposed to do now?

Yep.

My god Digg is such crap now ... wow. I don't think I've ever seen a site self-implode quite like this before. So completely.
spongedaveSep 2, 2010
I honestly can't tell if I like the new Digg. I access it from an iPhone... or used to. Sadly, the Digg apps no longer work. I only logged in the old fashioned way to see if there was any news of a fix. Now that I see the new Digg, I can't find anything interesting. I'm going to assume an iPhone app won't be any better... I'll guess I'll get news other ways...
downwithoppSep 2, 2010
The new digg reminds me of New Coke, and those of us who lived in the 80's know how that turned out.
intensevisualsSep 2, 2010
Regrettable but at least they listened to their fan base and changed course instead of plowing ahead straight into disaster.
mysedaiSep 2, 2010
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Digg Classic.
anthstaf56Sep 2, 2010
digg has more to worry about than old digg vs new digg. How about Reddit doubled it's page views in one day http://stock.ly/2hh4wx
philipz78Sep 2, 2010
Let's say you never heard of reddit before. Digg v4 has all this content from reddit now. You click on the link, the get a page view. Then you realize that the site is not that bad and you register, waiting for new digg to stabilize. It never does, or you just stop going to digg because reddit provides a similar service, a lot like ebay vs craigslist.
