Looking at a new build centered around SLI'd GTX 460's. New cards just make my build cheaper.

Just did this... you won't regret it

Thx!

Does anyone know if the 500 series has the same issues the 400 series had when trying to use Maya, 3d studio max etc? Basically they were meant for games, not Digital content creation... Something many people wish they'd known before getting the card.
If this 570 is good, then I'll go for it instead of a Quadro. Don't make me go Radeon NVidia *points finger*
dauntless1Dec 7, 2010
The main problem is that Nvidia is intentionally locking their chipsets into certain roles. ATI is doing this as well.
Essentially, the G-series or Radeon HD's are for gaming, and are locked to prevent proper function with business apps, and then they have the FirePro or Quadro cards (or some variant on) that are strictly for business apps and locked from performing at full function when playing games.
It is strictly so they can keep both lines of cards relevant.

What about those of us that like to relax from 3d modeling with a quick frag session? I spend too much time actually working, not trying to figure out video cards (I research, I buy, I forget about it for two years then do it again... and I've never had such a hard time then this round.)
dauntless1Dec 8, 2010
This time around a lot of it has to do with power. Several of the "Business" class Nvidia cards have theoretically BETTER specs than their "Gaming" class offerings, at a much lower price (in some cases). The idea is that they're worried that if they didn't block them off to only work with certain applications then people would just buy the cheaper business card. Of course, this swaps around every few years depending on technology.
Although, to answer your question, many people are running hybrid systems these days. They have both a gaming card and business card, to switch between as needed. Or, some gamers are running both an Nvidia card and ATI card, so they can use whichever is better for a given game.

THAT SOUNDS OUTSTANDING!!

Not so sure I'd call a video card selling for $349 MSRP 'midrange', but holy damn does this look like the next card I'm buying :)
dauntless1Dec 7, 2010
Well, right now your card ranges look something like this:
$0-150: Functional, basic use. Light gaming.
$150-350: Midrange, medium gaming, balanced power requirements and price.
$350-700: Expanded midrange (mid cards overclocked, extra ram ect.) to high end performers with heavy power and cooling requirements. Bleeding edge abilities and options.

Man I'm so behind on computer hardware. I have no clue what a GTX 570 is and how it is in comparison to the stuff I built. So is this card better than a 9800 GTX 512mb?
lvaneedeDec 8, 2010
Heaps better. The 9800 is ancient.
topwordpressDec 7, 2010
wow. nice i can't wait
ChKingWangDec 8, 2010
That sounds wonderful!
lvaneedeDec 8, 2010

This Rocks Altogether....

unless you're planning on running 120Hz triple monitors while gaming, this card is overkill. I don't know what makes the article say it is mid-range when it's high-end. my 5770 is still raping the latest games at 1080p maxed out across the board beyond vsync with plenty of room for more, and it's over a year old. So whats the incentive to buy one? By the time my card is obsolete, the 570 will be in the mid or sub $100 range. so you have to ask yourself do I spend $160 + $350 over a 4 or 5 year period, or do I spend $160 + $160 over a 4-5 year period with no noticeable difference.
lostinseganetDec 8, 2010
This needs a $150 price tag it will sell like gang something somethi...
