techi.com— The CR-48 marks a huge transition by Google into several potential new markets that it has scarcely touched over the last decade. Hardware, operating systems,

At first I thought Google was being dumb. Then I realized that I never use the key, but I do search a lot (the search button replaced the caps lock key), so it made sense.
I think soon people will hate the search button. There are so many other buttons that people don't use often. But the cap lock button is mentioned alot. It's the location that matters. I actually have no issue with the caplock. However, if I accidentally "search" while I was typing something long in a form like this, I may not like it at all. With the cap lock, I just hit it again.
The right thing to do is rather allowing users to assign the key to certain way things work. Maybe that's how it's done right now with Chrome (if I care to read the article)
I agree - they should maybe replace the caps button with another enter key for symmetry? But overall, starting an entirely different process with an easily accessible key is dangerous in the user frustration department :)
And when you search, do you really bother going toi google.com to do so, or do you simply type your search in the search box? If it is the former, then you are a moron since you was wasting time. If i is the latter, then why do you need a key on your keyboard to bring you to the search page?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I don't think so. Some body use it sometimes even if that time is so unfrequent. I guess that the associated Google team evaluated the frequency of the key usage before they decide to change the function of the caps lock key.
Oh really. If it transforms to search function, I'm okay and acceptable on it. I'm using search function in web highly regularly than using caps lock. I first thought that they just ignore the caps lock innocently.
according to Digg, every decision by a company is made by an evil CEO, sitting in a high backed leather chair, stroking their persian cat while finding new ways to screw their user base.
True. As a power user, I get by without almost any keys at all ... most of this sentence was typed with a combination of Alt, Ctrl, the letter x and binary eye-blinks to call different letters.
thats because you don't do data entry either. A keyboard ammature does not need a lot of keys on the keyboard right shift, right command or option, to name few. But a learned keyboard user needs those and knows when to use them.
But the whole point is the average web user, doesn't need to use caps lock all that often. Looking back at MY own use, I can safely say that the caps lock key would NOT be missed. That's all I meant by it. If you need the caps lock the option is still there, just go into settings and turn it back on again.
Professional drafters realize that "capitalization for clarity" is a hold over from when drafting was only done by hand. Computers have very clear lower case as well. Please come visit us in this century.
Holdover or not, that's how it's done. in this century. Still. Feel free to be a trendsetter and produce drawings that are unfamiliar to contractors and engineers. I guarantee you won't see much business.
I haven't seen the new keyboard, but I see far less used keys there that could have been used, or hell, why not just *add* a search key? I hardly (if ever) use print screen, scroll lock and break, even numlock has few uses, but I do use caps-lock frequently (not for messages).
Also, how about all the software (like games) that use the capslock key, if a manual/tutorial mentions the caps lock, people will not find it.
uhm... I don't know about you, but none of my laptops has num lock, scroll lock or break keys... And the print screen key is important if you want to take a screenshot on a windows machine. When do you use caps lock?
I use Print Screen a lot for taking screen shots for various reasons. I honestly still have no idea what Scroll Lock does, and I doubt anyone would miss it, and I don't understand why numlock even exists anymore. All that key servers to do is piss me off when it gets bumped and turns the numpad off. Pause/Break is pretty useless. I've seen a couple video games use it to pause the game, but most use Esc which just generally works better anyway. Outside of that I have no idea what it's use is.
Pause/Break is used in conjunction with Ctrl while programming. Very useful if you happen to get yourself into an infinite loop and the IDE becomes unresponsive.
I can live without the Caps lock key, but is driving me up the wall is the huge touch pad. I can't figure out how to turn it off. My meathooks are huge and I'm constantly dragging my thumbs across the touch pad. It distracting as hell to be editing and then find your somewhere else entirely. Cutting off my thumbs is not an acceptable solution. Now if I can figure out how to attach the cr-48 to a kitchen cabinet door, I'll have a kitchen solution.
Caps lock is annoying as hell because if I hit it accidentally it changes the key commands in the 3D animation software I use for my job. The shortcut for "Save" becomes "Save a new copy", leaving me with a jillion versions of my files.
Another monopoly flexing their muscles and changing a standard without concern for anything else. If Microsoft did this, whats the bet there would be a flame war? The location is a problem. How many times have you accidentally hit the caps lock? Well now you get a new tab and start a search right in the middle of your typing and if you weren't looking at the screen, you could type a lot into that search box before you notice.
What the f**k are you talking about? Do you think that if you achieve monopoly status in one market that you then are a monopoly in ALL markets?
Google is not a monopoly in this market. They are not even a player in this market.
This would be like saying that if Microsofot tried to introduce new buttons on the Zune that they are a monopoly trying to force changes on the personal media player market. Actually, calling Google a monopoly in this market is far worse than calling Zune a monopoly in the PMP market
Wow! How f**knig sad is your life that you just go around looking for any chance to inject your miseralbe pathetic political bitchfests into COMPLETELY unrelated conversations. And did you really think you made anyone else look bad but yourself?
Again...why the search key? For at least 5 years now all browsers have a search box that allows users to save a step and not have to go to a search engine to make a search. For awhile, Chrome (and now IE 9) allows you to search simply by typing the search term in the same box as you would type the URL. So why does anyone need a key to bring up the search page?
If you bother to go to the search page, you are wasting time. All a shortcut key does is makes that waste of time a little less. But it is still more time spent than simply using the search box.
I use capslock often, but I wouldn't be object to seeing it disappear since I often get angered after leaving it on. Being forced to hold shift while typing isn't that hard, but I never do it out of non-necessity.
Maybe they thought about doing the same thing their phones do, tap shift twice to capslock, once to disable...
Why can't shift and caps lock be the same key? Taping it then hitting other keys enables caps, while holding it while hitting one or several keys is shift, stopping the caps when you release. I just assumed this is what they were doing when I saw the keyboard.

These comments suck, and so does the article. How is it a big deal when you have an option? You can switch the functionality back to caps lock if you're often angry.
It's fine to not have a Caps Lock Key, but a dedicated search key is pretty useless for a computer user that will be using Chrome, so all they need to do to search is type the term in the URL/search box. Who the hell goes to Google.com to do a search anymore? Why take that extra step?
Oh no!!! A computer company is trying to change slightly how its users interact with their systems by leveraging well researched usability studies in anticipation of new products years off in the product pipeline!
It should be a second enter key. most peoples hand spend most of the time on the left side of the keyboard (copy, paste. alt tab, winD, ecs, space) you should give the most important key a spont next to the rest of the most used keys.
lol. OK, by "another monopoly" I meant this is what monopolies do, not that more than one monopoly is possible.
Although they aren't a monopoly in computers, they are in their field and the argument is they are using that position to make a change to something that is something of a standard. Is it OK if they decide the right alt and control keys are fair game too? What if Dell changes their keyboards to start a browser and search the dell store? I'm not a Luddite, just don't like unilaterally messing with standards. Maybe I am a Luddite?

I'm OK with sacrificing your productivity to make my internet viewing experience a little more pleasant.
Sorry.
And one-button mice suck.

Oh no!!! A computer company is trying to change slightly how its users interact with their systems by leveraging well researched usability studies in anticipation of new products years off in the product pipeline!
Who else is outraged?!!!

I HOLD SHIFT

It should be a second enter key. most peoples hand spend most of the time on the left side of the keyboard (copy, paste. alt tab, winD, ecs, space) you should give the most important key a spont next to the rest of the most used keys.

Why don't they just make double tapping the shift key capslock? Like Apple do.
bomsquadDec 13, 2010
They should just make it Shift + Caps Lock.
loopbizDec 13, 2010
The should have left it alone and let you program the keys yourself.
