The reason why no Blu-ray or DVD is because they want you to "rent" your video's via there on line store..
Like every other frigging device I currently have try's to do.
Everything you own is now turning into a home vending machine.
digital, rent, or buy (well kind of it's a digital download that's stuck on you game machine hard drive.) Or stream (pay per view) etc.

It's really about curbing piracy. If your console only reads proprietary discs, it makes it harder to copy games. For all of about a month or two.

I think this is idiotic. Wasn't Nintendo's excuse with the Wii was that everybody already owns a dvd player? I may own a dozen dvd players, but being able to stream that video to a tablet like screen is something my other dvd players cant do!

Any way storage media is not going down on adoption, streaming and on demand content is future.... doesn't matter.
waldo686Jun 16, 2011
i totally agree, I don't see why you would get dugg down
mrzaikoJun 16, 2011
keeps the price low, but no DVD? Wouldn't make a big cost difference.
hasahugedigJun 16, 2011
can't they add that in as a purchasable app though through their eshop channel?

no hardware possibility
neotechniJun 16, 2011
yes
jonbeckettJun 16, 2011
Nintendo's logic is pretty reasonable. I just can't imagine why anybody with a Wii would bother upgrading though...

Meh. Not buying it. I'll stick to my PC which can do it ALL.
kenjuraJun 16, 2011
Yeah, I do have one of those. It's called a PlayStation 3.
The Wii U is a pathetic piece of s**t. Dumbest Nintendo console since the Virtual Boy. It's a console that can't match the previous-generation competition, a "casual gaming machine" that can't match Facebook or the iPhone, and now also a handheld that probably can't touch the old PSP, much less, say, an iPad.
With the Wii U, Nintendo is aggressively pursuing last place in every category.
Abandon ship, people. You've played enough Mario and Zelda for fifty f**king lifetimes.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

To think they would have learned from the last system - DVD playback is a necessity!
neotechniJun 16, 2011
The excuse is simply that, an excuse. There aren't that many bluray players out there. DVD yes. Bluray no.
pureeviljesterJun 16, 2011
VHS was everywhere when DVDs came out. So what's your point?
davidsherman73Jun 16, 2011
It's a GAME system. That's it, nothing more. Blue-Ray players are getting cheaper and getting the streaming media services like Netflix and Pandora. Let Nintendo do what it does best, GAMES..
pureeviljesterJun 16, 2011
an additional feature is more storage space but Nintendo's proprietary discs might be able to hold around the same amount of data.
alienkidJun 16, 2011
I take it you've never watched netflix on the wii
rufiohoJun 15, 2011
uhh probably not a good idea
ofnumbersJun 16, 2011
Care to elaborate?
wolf3001Jun 16, 2011
I have not touched my DVD player in years my controller stopped working and I have used my PlayStations ever sense. I even use it to watch videos off the net on my big flat screen TV instead of on my PC.
alienkidJun 16, 2011
So basically I'm gonna have to jailbreak it like I did with my wii
generalerror324Jun 16, 2011
While it would have been nice to have that functionality, if it keeps the price down, then I'm for it. I think they're right when they say enough people have(Or will have) dvd or blu-ray capabilities by that point. I'm also going to assume it doesn't stream from a media server/home PC either.
jodiaz76Jun 16, 2011
Why is this a big deal? BluRay Players are on sale for $99 at Walmart
thvkJun 16, 2011
I suspect you'll see some changes to the wiiu before it ships. Nintendo needs to add functionality to keep pace (and surpass) competition. When you have only one shot every five years to knock some socks off, every green checkmark on a product comparison chart counts.
ronbakJun 16, 2011
So what-still an awesome system!

Great idea, there are plenty of devices to fulfill that function.
Although people with limited space like college students, will be a little upset about this.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
