mashable.com — After a month of testing the new alpha version to invite-only users, Diggs redesigned site is live for everyone. The new interface and functionality of the social news network focuses on the personalized news stream, My News, which shows stories dugg by users you choose to follow (similar to Twitter), rather than the most popular news (note: at press time, the new site is still experiencing some downtime issues). The company has had a turbulent year. In April, Founder Kevin Rose became CEO after Jay Adelson stepped down, reportedly in part because Diggs venture capitalists were frustrated that they had yet to see a return on the $40 million invested in the company despite staff cuts in 2009 to improve profitability. The site has also been struggling with a decline in traffic, according to Compete.com, only further increasing the pressure to reinvent itself.A New Digg ExperienceThis site also has an improved content submission process. The Digg It submission bar appears prominently at the top center of the page. Users no longer have to navigate to a separate page to submit content, and users can also easily share submissions via Twitter, Facebook or e-mail. Digg also has a range of new, unique features, such as saving stories to read for later. The SUL and Working with PublishersTaking more cues from Twitter, the new Digg makes it easier to discover users to follow with its own version of the Suggested User List, which includes media publishers and celebrity figures like Ashton Kutcher, who, by the way, doesnt have nearly as many followers (4,000+) as he does on Twitter. The SUL and Diggs initiative to recruit big brands to follow seems to be paying off. Some of the accounts listed, including Mashables, have grown from a few hundred followers to thousands in just a month. In an e-mail sent to publishers this week, Diggs new Product Manager Mike Cieri highlighted Diggs help page for new publishers and its plans to help publishers drive traffic and revenue, including improved analytics and reporting, additional incoming feed capabilities, and improving the discovery process to ensure all publishers are being found and followed on Digg. Working with brands and publishers has helped generate user interest and revenue for sites like Foursquare and Twitter, and Digg will likely try to do the same.Too Much or Too Little Too Late?Despite the many improvements to the interface and overall experience on the site, only time will tell as to whether the redesign is too much or too little too late. First, the redesign may be too much of a shift for Diggs core users, who have traditionally have driven much of the activity on the site, even after the Top Digger list was removed. Because the emphasis is now on a self-curated stream, its top diggers may be alienated. However, if the new functionality works to attract a more mainstream userbase, then Digg still wins.Alternatively, the changes may not be enough. Digg is clearly taking lessons from the likes of Twitter and Facebook in regards to how content is being shared on those platforms. But is this redesign really the re-imagining of a platform or just a band-aid that will only stop the bleeding temporarily? After all, content submission is still largely automated through a link submission process or an RSS feed, and the comments, opinions and conversation is mostly secondary part of the experience. This is still far from Facebook and Twitter, where the opinion and commentary of the user sharing the content is nearly as important as the content itself, featured prominently on in the Twitter stream or Facebook News Feed with the link or content blurb below.ConclusionWhat Digg may benefit from is the new seamlessness of the submission and consumption processes. Users that are looking for a curated stream alongside the popular content can do it on Digg. The majority of Diggs userbase will likely find the new design refreshing and it very well may gain some traction among users that feel overwhelmed with the real-time news stream or the pontifications in their news feed. Better yet, Digg may attract a whole new audience looking for a place to discover news through curated sources. What are your thoughts? Do you like the new Digg? Will the new version attract more users to the struggling social news site or is it taking its last breaths?Follow Mashable on DiggReviews: Digg, Facebook, Foursquare, Mashable, TwitterMore About: digg, digg.com, facebook, jay adelson, kevin rose, social bookmarking, social media, social news, social sharing, twitterFor more Social Media coverage:Follow Mashable Social Media on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Social Media channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

Well, the first thing the new default comment expansion seems to mean is that commentjacking will now be the norm. You can bury me, but you read this didn't you? If I had commented at my "natural place in the queue" you'd have never seen this because rather than being the 20th root comment down (and 20th line down), I'd be the 500th line down. I can get that noise on reddit.

Thanks for the link. I am no longer pissed. I was angry before, but not because of the s**t Digg turned into. I could care less about Digg now. If they want to turn this place into a graveyard, then so be it. The owners won't suddenly become overnight hobos. They don't have to suffer crushing losses. They have their money in their bank accounts. That's why they don't give a f**k about how piss poor the navigation of this site is. Or how a moron could plainly see this was an attempt to cash in on the facebook pie at any cost. They don't give a s**t about what the future of Digg will be. They just want more advertising money by reaching out to as dumb an audience as possible. If they don't care, neither do I.
I don't care.
I was originally pissed because reddit has the most god ugly layout I've ever seen. But with this user script, its actually tolerable.
Farewell old Digg. All good things come to an end.

1badAug 26, 2010
Yea, this is terrible. I have clicked on one or two stories in my new digg stream since diggv4 launched. And almost every story on "My News" stream has just 1 digg, because they all suck. This is all very pointless if we are supposed to follow "taste makers" (as kevin calls them) but each taste maker just pushes their own crap, even if its no good. Didn't digg become popular because the community as a whole filtered out the crap? Now I scroll through "My News" and I see non-stop crappy articles. Noone I follow diggs anything except for content publishers. My friends as a whole don't use digg, so I cant follow them. To top it off if they did try digg now they would be so confused and find the experience so terrible that they probably wouldn't stick around. Furthermore, I have discovered that I don't give a s**t if one of the people I follow diggs a story, because that is only one person. The story is probably s**t with only digg and no comments, so why is it in my "My News" stream.
rileywiebeAug 26, 2010
You see the tab next to My News? The one that says Top News? Click that...
crazyredivanAug 26, 2010
Yes, because the "my news" and "top news" tabs are the only problem with this redesign...
anothersoldierAug 26, 2010
Shouldn't have to. Why does it default to a s**tty tab? Why does this s**tty tab even exist?
jadrianAug 26, 2010
If they all suck why are you following them at all?
mu1tiAug 26, 2010
Don't follow anyone and have a blank page like me... all my old friends who have magically become followers never posted stories anyway..
this craziness is going to kill this site for people looking for fresh stories on the web.. people used to kill hours on digg wading though the recent submissions ..now they will be gone in 5 mins
dbialacAug 27, 2010

create a bookmark on your bookmarks toolbar for http://digg.com/news and just use that.
letterqAug 27, 2010
Just create a bookmark that takes you directly to http://digg.com/news . A bigger problem is the styling, which I think is a step backwards.

I think Digg is banking on a Facebook esque change. Everyone always freaks out when Facebook goes through it's various changes but then people get used to it and calm down/continue using it. However, this is a massive mistake for a site like digg. People have options (reddit), this isnt like facebook. I for one, don't even come here for a social media type option. I just like seeing random/cool articles and read intelligent comments. Digg trying to penetrate deeper into the social media is the wrong direction.
higherlogicAug 26, 2010
Everyone freaks out on any site regardless of who it is. People hate when a site changes, but eventually they get over it (read: they get used to it) and carry on (until, of course, the next change, when the cycle repeats).Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Not always... this version is just bad.
halyardAug 26, 2010
Not this time.
misterymeatAug 27, 2010
It's not the UI changes that are pissing most people off, it's the restricted view of articles for those of us not using the site in a social way. I like seeing articles from different perspectives, I don't get why we are now expected to primarily view articles submitted by friends. I wouldn't even know who to add for more articles (how would new Diggers know?).
Unless this changes very soon I'm switching to Reddit.
stavrosianAug 27, 2010
This is generally true: whenever you change something, people who like it will freak out and hate it.
Speaking as somebody who has calmly sat through many, many unwarranted s**tstorms brought about by the redesigns of many places, this is the first one where I have agreed with the wailing hordes. This is a disaster right now. Bringing the place back to what it was (and improving it) would be a fairly simple job, but those in charge are almost certainly thinking "meh, standard backlash. Who cares?" rather than accepting that they have screwed the pooch royally.
purzzzellAug 27, 2010
Oh well, I'm on my way out - I'm just trying to stay long enough to piss on the fire and make a stink about it.
I'm just one user.
But if new users don't stay, and some old users leave - they'll see a drop in traffic, which is what I want to show them.
jamaphAug 27, 2010
I red arrowed you because Facebook took a more morphing approach, and still to this day is regularly going through tweaks.
When is the last time digg was updated in the last year? Maybe the upcoming stories section, that was added over a year ago though... Facebook went through three or four changes in the same time period.
These changes are numerous, and immediate. It's too much at once.
jamesmcvAug 27, 2010
I think you're forgetting how low the switching costs are for a site like Digg. It's the easiest thing in the world for me to just start using Reddit, but I can't just leave Facebook for Myspace if none of my friends come with me. The only users that have switching costs are power users, and I'm pretty sure they represent a low proportion of Digg's user base.
drfailzAug 27, 2010
f**k that I can live with changes. But this is horrible. I used to check digg whenever I had the chance. This is the 2nd time I've visited today. If Kevin Rose wanted to kill digg he chose the best method

The bigger problem is that Digg is trying to be LIKE twitter (btw, hasn't twitter shown us how NOT to turn a profit?). According to the new bar at the top, i have 58 followers and am following 0 people. That shows you exactly how much I care about the social aspects of this site.

eupatorusAug 26, 2010
Amen, brother. I agree entirely.
unclecavemanAug 27, 2010
Totally agree, osterhouse. Social networking is the new "hot" thing to do. Digg needs to stick to what it's good at; aggregating funny/interesting things on the Internet. I don't go to Subway for my breakfast and I sure as s**t don't come to Digg for my social networking.
mmembrinoAug 27, 2010
i would love to digg you more than once to show how strongly i share this sentiment.
xtmno3Aug 27, 2010
Though you can't see it anymore, I have been on digg reliably since 2005. I am leaving for Reddit. The direction digg is going in flies in direct opposition to the original goals, IMHO. digg used to be a site where you would encounter new information faster than anywhere else on the Internet, now digg is simply an RSS Reader. You pick which flavors of Kool-Aid you want from which publications and that is seemingly all you get (plus paid advertisement stories!).
I think it speaks volumes when your users are willing to go to a site that is a complete eyesore (Reddit) just because you have gone in the wrong direction. This is a mistake, and I think digg will lose a good deal of its prior userbase because of it. Will digg die? Probably not, but the people who made this site popular and touted it to their friends will be gone.

I think Digg has officially become a case study on how not to rollout radical software change. Putting bugs aside; are these guys stupid? They have totally revamped the site making it difficult to use. There is also too much interaction needed by the user to get the things he wants. It feels bloated and clumsy. Comments are difficult to follow. People are replying to the first comment on the page rather than create new individual comments.
This is just a mess; they should have rolled out changes incrementally. It's like trying to learn how to drive a car then all of a sudden you're in the c**kpit of a 747. WTF?

I find it so funny that every time anything changes for progress there are always those people who bitch and moan that "OMG THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!" "OMG I HATE THIS I AM GOING TO GO KILL MYSELF"
Then after a few months when everything settles down and they start to get used to the new look and style people forget all about it until the next update that changes everything again and then they start the same bulls**t all over again saying "PLEASE KEVIN PUT IT MAKE THE WAY IT WAS"
I know people find it hard to change. But damnit this is technology. If you need therapy to help you progress through the changes in technology then maybe you should not even have a computer to begin with. Go in the woods and build yourself a cabin and hope the plants to grow too fast for you so you wont have any more therapy inducing changes for the remaining time left in your life.

If you need therapy to help you progress through the changes in technology then maybe you should not even have a computer to begin with. Go in the woods and build yourself a cabin and hope the plants to grow too fast for you so you won’t have any more therapy inducing changes for the remaining time left in your life.

designerutahAug 26, 2010
Agreed. The point of Digg to me was to find a place with lots of interesting things to read, and participate in the discussions for those stories I like/hate. I don't care how many followers or friends I have. I don't want to see that crap on the top of the site. It's irrelevant to anyone who isn't a social whore.
What's with the assumption that I want to "follow" any publishers? I don't want the world filtered according to my prejudices. I want to see and hear stories that I agree with, and others that make my blood boil. That was the whole point! Frankly, I don't care about power posters, I certainly don't want to have news filtered to only show specific posters. Think how many great stories you miss if you don't have the whole flood pouring in!
And then there's the really poor visual design. Hard read, hard to follow, and so much space given to crap that I want gone. Give me back a simple interface, one that shows me all stories, stories by category, and lets me easily find stories I've commented on, and if there's feedback inviting a response.
jadrianAug 26, 2010
You don't have to follow other publishers, you have the option to do so if you want. Personally I also don't just want the world according to the filters of the majority.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The whole idea of Digg 4 is to make it more of a "social" site, where your friends have more influence on what you see, and you have more of an influence on what your friends see. That's great for popular dudes like Kevin Rose, but what he's forgetting is that many Digg users don't have tons of friends, which is exactly why they're browsing Digg looking for interesting ways to pass the time.
I just feel like it was created for someone else, not people like me. It doesn't feel welcoming. It feels cold. Even the styling seems like a step in the wrong direction. Oh well, just my opinion.
mnocketAug 26, 2010
Judging from Kevin Rose's tweets it seems he thinks the only problems are performance during launch and bugs.
Kevin's latest tweet: "crazy traffic day, over 1M+ v4 users, we're still working hard to fix bugs.. more updates soon!" (that was 13 hours ago)
It seems Kevin is in denial. It's not just bugs (although there are many that should have been fixed in beta), it's the DESIGN. The new design sucks. Read the comments! Virtually everyone hates it. I suspect Kevin and his staff are sitting there thinking that it's just typical user resistance to change. It isn't. It's a new design that tries to change the way people use Digg. Problem is - people know how they want to use Digg. The old Digg facilitated that behavior. The new Digg severely inhibits that behavior. Digg must have gotten similar feedback during the beta period. Obviously they choose to ignore that feedback. The only question that matters now is will Kevin listen to Digg's users now? It's not looking good.
MichichaelAug 26, 2010
No bury button. Digg has become facebook. What's with this social media s**t - I already have a facebook account simply because I'm forced to if I don't want to make new accounts everywhere. Now the view sucks, I can't easily bury a s**tty story like this one, and it keeps trying to integrate with this social s**t.
I'm antisocial and asocial. Yes, I actively want the downfall of society. Yes, I dislike everyone. Even those who agree with me. I'm your usual Digg user. We don't like this s**t. Put it back.

Why the Bury option is important.
1) Allows good to get to the top, and filters out the bad.
2) Empowers the Digg users for good, and yes evil. <cough DPs>
3) Gives Digg users the ability to control the News.
What makes Digg different than RSS feeds is that Digg was controlled by the Diggers.
The Report News button introduced a 3rd party with power over what users read.
This effectively destroys the sense of the community Digg once had, by removing the Digg users’ ability to control the News.
How to deal with Digg Patriots w/o removing the bury button!?!
- Analysis of how Digg Patriots work.
- Digg Patriots have built a social network to control what type of news hits the front page.
- Strategy: As a group they target stories to bury.
Counter strategy: The only people who like what the Digg Patriots are the DPs.
- Put a tab for the “Most Buried News” in 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days.
- Let the Digg and Bury War Begin!!!

Actually, I would give Kevin more credit of realization (besides as the public facing head of Digg it's his job to be overly optimistic). He knows perfectly well the fury he has let loose. However, if you read the article you should see it isn't really Kevin's fault. See, he may be CEO and all, but he takes his marching orders from the Venture Capitalists who gave all that startup money to Digg. They want their money and they want it now.
Real Digg did not suffice to get them a return - in fact Digg was/is losing money every day. They tried ads. Not enough revenue. They tried adding sponsored links. Not enough revenue. The VC were getting impatient. Kevin had to toss a Hail Mary. That is v4. And the ball is.... intercepted in the inzone!
terminal157Aug 26, 2010

He could have listened to the negative feedback during the beta period. If the VCs are really in charge, they should replace the management team that is responsible for this setback.
netantAug 26, 2010
I couldn't digg this comment, because I have a problem believing Rose intentionally wanted a piece of s**t.
I suspect the re-engineering had to do with two things. 1) Address flaws with how stories get to the top, and the comment "gaming". 2) It was too "costly" to implement the previous interface as it was. I'm guessing it looks like the current piece of s**t because it requires less computing resources.
As is, I can't follow comment threads. And I made these criticisms in beta. digg is just going to lose a SLEW of users.
magzineAug 27, 2010
I also complained about the comment system. Way to listen to your users, Digg.

Which is all fine and good. But the VCs should f**king know that there just isn't (and never has been) a guaranteed return on your money when you invest in some sort of internet technology. How long did it take Amazon to turn a profit? Years and years.
Instead of the nonsense v4 revision we got, what they could have done was ADDED to what was already there. I'm sure that *some* people would want to use Digg in a way that they are intending for it to be used now. So they could have added the "My News" tab (clever name guys, really...) and had it sitting at the top of the page next to "Top Stories" and "Upcoming".
But that's not all of it. Not by a long shot.
They borked the comment sections, which was why many of us participated in this site.
If I miss a day or two of Digg, I would like to have the opportunity to read (or at least quickly skim) the stories that I missed. Now, if I miss some stories, I have to click through page after page wich "Load More". If I navigate away from Digg by accident (or go into the comments section of an article), I have to start at the top of the page and reload everything again. Not only is that ridiculous from a design perspective, but it must cost them a lot of money in bandwidth.
The comment box is 4 lines tall and not resizable. It's harder to stay on topic!
Etc.
The exports in Libya are numerous in amount. One thing they export is corn, or as the Indians call it, maize. Another famous Indian was Crazy Horse. In conclusion, Libya is a land of contrast.

if not, they must be hoping there'll be enough new users (from facebook etc?) to cover all of us who leave. babaganushAug 26, 2010
I think the hope was to update Digg in a way that made it more accessible to the general public. However, in doing so, Digg is alienating its core users. Kevin seems to have his eyes locked on growing Digg at the expense of its current users in hopes that the new traffic will more than make up for it. However, the end product seems to be a Facebook/Twitter bs machine riddled with bugs. If users want to share news stories from Digg, they will do so via FB and Twitter anyway. I see no need to form the new version of Digg around the same used up formula.
doctechnicalAug 27, 2010
And it was the core users that made Digg worthwhile. So the new s**tt with it's core of "Ooo Pretty Grafix!" users will pull the site down to the level of YouTube comments.

Of course he's in denial. Every time a website makes a horrible change, they pass it off like it's something great that you'll love no matter much anger it creates. Think of facebook, they act like every change is the greatest thing ever when the entire community revolts around it. Chances are they'll continue the "oh everything is great and this is all for you" facade for the rest of this mess. I will gain so much respect for Digg if they have the balls to actually listen.

What an awful waste of space on left and right, i feel someone just slapped me from both sides as i opened the site
speedsteamboatAug 27, 2010
This. Exactly this.
The most valuable aspect of Digg for me has always been participating in the comment discussions. Old Digg let me easily find my old posts, see how they were being received, and respond to any replies. It was all neatly organized in my profile history. Now that's all gone. My profile history is a useless collection of the articles I've looked at. It's barely even MY history at this point.
Btw, I gave feedback during the beta citing all of these complaints. I was soundly ignored.
Today I registered for a Reddit account. I still hate Reddit. It's ugly and difficult to use the way I'd like, but Diggv4 someone how managed to be even worse.
Closed AccountAug 26, 2010
It means you can't go back and easily follow threads you're participated in. In other words, it is now much more difficult to have a meaningful discussion about an article you've read. Add that to the absolutely f**king awful layout and excessive whitespace, and the new digg sucks like the fat sorority freshman at her first frat party.
mnocketAug 26, 2010

My fellow diggers, we've had a great few years. To those of you whom I had the pleasure of engaging in meaningful debates and thought provoking discussions... I thank you. To everyone who ever gave me a little digg here and there... I thank you. But let's call it like it is. This new design, as eviljelloman has stated, will severely inhibit the way the majority of us used to use the site. Gone are the days of vigorous discussion and integral dialogue. What we have to look forward to are open-ended strings of comments. There is not one discussion ending before another is beginning- and not in a good way. As much as it pains me... it feels as though Digg has morphed into some hideous sheep fathered by the drunken brothers of Reddit's designers.
However, for what it's worth... we had a good run.

"Slow down there partner, you almost lost an oxe." WHAT THE f**k DOES THIS MEAN??
jeran42Aug 26, 2010
"Digg has broken an axle.
We might have to sell some oxen but we'll be back on the trail soon."
i think it is a typo'd orgeon trail reference. but yeah, this whole thing was down ABSOLUTLY wrong. i cant find a single thing i like about this.

It means Digg's got some seriously life-threatening dysentery.

Basically you made too many comments. Apparently they went from a star wars message theme to an Oregon Trail message theme.

WHOA DOUBLE OXE
bdbrAug 26, 2010
I'm less concerned about the "failed to load story" problems, because that's probably just a first-day issue that they can easily fix. The fact that its impossible to follow discussions seems to be intentionally built in to the current system, and that's a big problem.
kitsuaAug 26, 2010
Exactly. That's the deeper, underlying f**kup.
brucealmightyAug 26, 2010
Months of testing??? On whom....a remedial class for kindergartners.....????
atarioAug 27, 2010
Seriously. QA screwed the pooch on this one, big-time.
douglasqAug 27, 2010
If by "kindergartners" you mean "Kevin Rose's housecats" then yes.

Is there any way to make "Top News" the Default tab??
speedyrevAug 27, 2010
I changed my bookmark to go directly there. Still hate the overall experience.

I don't think so. Just bookmark digg.com/news

I would highly recommend checking out Reddit. I've been having a proper look at it and exploring it for a few hours and it seems great. With a bit of customization (using subreddits - similar to the old Digg's categories) it's everything like the old Digg and more.
mymainmanAug 27, 2010
There is nothing to complain about.
Want to start with the "top news" section instead of "my news", like it used to be?
Just make http://digg.com/news your new bookmark/favorite.
I just can't see why so many miss that?
"my news" is just an added bonus that may be a good thing if lots of people use it in the future!
So what's there to complain about?
I, for one, really like the new fresh design.
There are always people that feel uncomfortable with a new design/look no matter what, it's just a question of time before they get used to it...
JHauckAug 27, 2010
I can see what I'm typing just fine. But I hate the new Digg.
prolikewhoaAug 27, 2010
I want this comment near the top.....
I want the Digg RSS feed to go to the comments page instead of the article like the old Popular Feed did!!!!!!
psisarAug 27, 2010

I cant digg comments. I cant bury comments. I cant digg stories. Every 10 seconds i get an 'error' message yet when i click to 'report this bug' i get an error window.
It took me 5 minuets to log in. I keep getting a 'loading' icon. And i cant view more comments.
What. The. f**k.
This is what BETA is for. You test test test. If s**t dont work s**t dont work...Not to mention everything is anti digg.
allheretruthAug 27, 2010
Yea i tried to edit that comment but i must have taken more than a minute
ashur420Aug 27, 2010
dear digg/kevin rose/developers,
f**k off. new digg sucks fat f**king nuts.
first. "top news" should be default, "my news" is worthless. I don't want to read every single +1 article from some stupid schmuck that puts every f**king link on his website here. this RSS feed digg is bulls**t. have fun when all the old school diggers disappear.
until this s**t is fixed...im gone. its been a fun couple years...had some laughs...maybe even a cry or two. but im jumping off this ship before it pulls me under.
russelllucidAug 27, 2010
Sorry to say this but its the only way to let those up there know that Digg needs to go back to the way it was is by refusing to digg, visit or submit the usual articles. Look at Reddit for now and "arrow up" messages in the threads that want to change this hunk of junk (and I don't mean that in a millennium falcon way)!
psisarAug 27, 2010

On Kevin's blog, he's quite pleased with the digg changes. He's ignoring all the negative comments because the traffic to digg is up 40%
I believe the traffic is up because the new site isn't optimized and a lot of people are coming over to see just how bad it is.
I'm not someone who is complaining just to complain - I'm a software developer and I deal with user complaints about changes all the time. My complaint is that the new digg functionality doesn't give us anything positive. Instead, what we have is a lot of issues, and a social networking site crammed into a RSS feed reader. It plain sucks because the only use of the social aspect is to game the system to get stories listed. Normal users won't need any of it. Also the menu on the left side takes up too much space, making the content are cramped.

Is this Digg or an online iPhone 4?
adrian12Aug 26, 2010
Yes I don't like how the middle part (the main section that people read) is squished but the right side is so wide. It says the right side is for the list of top stories, but I guess they just want to make room to accommodate the ad on top.
admdrewAug 26, 2010
Yeah.. in fact, when I was trying to digg up some comments, I got the bar at the top that said "Unable to digg comment, please try again - if this is an error, report this bug".
So, sure enough, I clicked on "report this bug", linking to http://about.digg.com/bug-report.
Clicking there sent me to a page indicating "The requested page could not be found. Pretty sure it's a website bug? Please let us know and we'll try to get it fixed." with a link of http://digg.com/contact/bugreport.
THAT link gives me another error, "Oops, what you're looking for isn't here!" with a f**king email link for reporting bugs. Good lord, this is currently a piece of s**t.
admdrewAug 26, 2010

My issue with Reddit is how ugly it is. I know you can skin it etc, but god dam their homepage looks like Frontpage 97 had filthy sex with Word 2000 and a mule after a $9 bottle of tequila. But after this update Digg isn't much better. Light blue text on a white background?! Really?
This is a sad day.

Agree, and it seems to have lost my comment history, I can't find any past comments past the last 20.
I will come back after a few days and see if it's all fixed, otherwise it looks like Digg is Deadd.

kingofshadows92Aug 26, 2010
You have to go to "My News" at the top and it'll show a list of articles you've recently commented on.

msaleemAug 25, 2010
Basically Digg sold its user base to the mainstream media whores and big industry blogs. I could care less about the power users being marginalized. Balancing out the community is a great thing. What really pisses me off is the indie publisher is getting blasted in the ass as Digg reneges on its promise of being the savior of smaller publishers and giving them a voice and bends over to take it from sites like NYTimes, Telegraph, etc.
doodlemasterAug 26, 2010

sigmaechoAug 26, 2010
Old digg was really good, it just had one major flaw - it was practically impossible for a nobody to get on the front page, no matter how good the content they submitted, you had to have a lot of "friends" or spam the story out to people to get your stories dugg. Which means content wasn't king, it was really just a popularity contest. Which is why the front page reads like a feed of the same few sites (Cracked, HuffPo, XKCD, DailyFail, etc...). What digg users really want is to find new and interesting stuff we wouldn't have found otherwise, not a news feed of the same handful of sites (that's what RSS readers are for). I have long since stopped bothering to submit content, no matter how good it is, because I know there's simply no point. I want to see a digg where every user has an equal opportunity to reach the front page.
The biggest problem with new digg is not the interface problems or bugs (which can be fixed), but the new focus on 'following' people. This means that digg will become MORE of a popularity contest, not less. This is the exact opposite direction they need to be going. The right move would have been to display all new submissions in the site's sidebars so that every story gets some views (regardless of who submitted it), and good content will bubble up naturally. Instead, the new digg will probably make this problem a whole lot worse, with the front page likely to become dominated by major publishers.
I seriously doubt I'll be sticking around much longer.
[p.s. - Also, it's pretty pathetic to see first Zuckerberg, now Rose, change their sites to be more like their favorite fanboy obsession: twitter. Especially for Mr. Rose, who had a truly unique and original site that didn't need to imitate anybody. I come to digg for digg, if I wanted twitter, I'd join twitter!]

flip2tripAug 26, 2010
You mean upcoming? It's gone.
sipsyrupAug 26, 2010
I like how they removed this feature. You know, the feature that basically made digging up stories possible. The feature that made this website. Who knows where stories come from now? Oh, nevermind. It's all sponsored s**t and s**t that got dugg up from friendly circle jerks.
boyprodigy1Aug 26, 2010
Now all we're going to get is pop culture news and republican fap fests... damnit.
crazyredivanAug 26, 2010
The mere fact that "upcoming" is gone means Digg is pretty much useless to me now. I don't want to see random s**t other "people" have decided are worthy of front-page. I want to look through it all myself.
sq2shooterAug 26, 2010
This is a major mistake. Not being able to find new submitted stories is just a horrific decision by somebody. Yes I know I can see new stories under my news but I want knew stuff from all submissions. I don't want to have to pick who I get news from, I want to see all of it.
tomtom10Aug 26, 2010

And I can't see what I'm typing right now, because some assh**e graphic designer thought using very, very light blue font with a thin line weight on a bright white background would be a good idea. Guess what assh**e, black text on white background. We've kinda figured that one out 20 years ago for PCs, and about 2500 years ago in general.

Dear Digg,
Thank you for being consistent and f**king up every single piece of your site. It's all broken. That is really quite an accomplishment. Comments, new stories, the thumbs up, mobile site, Android app, upcoming, default page, expanded threads, s**tty fonts, everything. I mean, I went to reddit today. reddit. Thanks a lot assh**es.
Signed,

7m7ufAug 26, 2010
I had a digg 4 invite, used it for a day, then started using the old site... i dreaded this day. I like the "Idea" behind the new site, i just wish it wasn't a step backwards in that there are no upcoming stories, and not being able to see if a comment was replied to and if it was thumbed up (arrow now) or down for all comments you made in one spot. Hopefully they'll add those things back.
foddonAug 26, 2010
Right there with ya. I'm sure they had numbers on the amount of people invited to the beta and how few times they actually used it. What this tells me is they just don't give a s**t about their existing userbase.
marshnotellAug 26, 2010
Do more than vote, tell Digg to change it back! Send them an email since it's too buggy to get through the site feedback forum. Here's what I sent to support@digg.com:
So I wanted to signup for Digg several months ago but you weren't taking new memberships in anticipation of your Digg v4 rollout. Now that I have created an account on the new one I am sorry to say I will never use it. Getting rid of the bury button, getting rid of the thumbs up/down, and changing the color scheme to blue from yellow makes it look like you just want to be a less useful version of Facebook. It really is sad. Add to this all of the constant bugs that I've been getting trying to use the site and it's a colossal failure on the part of Digg as a company. How long has Digg been working on this new version? The answer is long enough to not have every other action on the site result in an error message. Apparently you can't code yourselves out of a paper bag.
I know you spent a lot of time and effort on the new version and it sucks to have it so universally lampooned but just change it back to the last version. Do it now, do it quick, and apologize profusely to your userbase and you may yet be saved.
Just to really drive my point home, I would rather have the Dragon Age background ad permanently on the site instead of the new Digg. Even if you fixed the bugs I would prefer the Dragon Age ad to the maimed version Digg is now.

Be sure to click the "Give us feedback" link on the bottom of the page. Maybe if enough people rate everything as terrible we can get the old digg back.
nozzleAug 28, 2010
I tried to digg you up, but the site is so broken that it didn't increment the count.
amanwithnonameAug 25, 2010
Well, my two cents on the whole error thing: First of all, EVERY new software ends up having bugs at first. Hell, the old digg still had its bugs (Remember, "Token Appears Invalid"). Whether or not it has bugs right now shouldn't be an issue, but rather, how quickly they fix them.
Besides, we, the people, were the ones clamoring for them to crank this out, so we're partly responsible for any rush the developers ended up facing.
As for design...It's going to take some getting used to. :/ It LOOKS better, but I'm not sure I like the whole focus around friends...It's like they decided to take the whole "links" feature of Facebook and jam it in edgewise, and then toss the old stuff on the side.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kitsuaAug 25, 2010
A few bugs I can forgive. At the moment, Digg is practically unusable. It's atrocious. Nothing works.
My main problem with the new design is the comments. I can't see from my profile when my comments have been dugg or buried or replied to. The whole system of commenting has changed too much and that's the main reason I come here. What's more, all my comments from old Digg are impossible to find. You get less time to edit too.
In all, a terrible role out. I'm not feeling good about this at all.
smemilyAug 25, 2010
Try navigating to your own comments from your profile. I always end up on random stuff some other guy said.
kitsuaAug 26, 2010
I can't navigate my comments at all. I can't tell how my comments have been dugg or buried or replied to and jumping to a comment, as you say, seems to link to a completely different comment. It's a complete balls-up of the first order.
boyprodigy1Aug 26, 2010
Holy crap, this might be the first good thing i've found. How many levels of reply do we get now?
njankAug 26, 2010
yeah, I tried this too. gave up after two or three tries.
netantAug 26, 2010
There's no display of the digg score, so there's no way to see if the comment got a reaction.
There's no way to follow the comment responses, so you can engage in a conversational thread.
If the company can't fix it, I'm probably going to leave digg for reddit.
ajajadudeAug 26, 2010
Agreed. A big part of this for me was to be able to interact with others on Digg (sharing opinions, arguing, flaming, etc). I don't understand why the commenting system had to change to much, there was nothing wrong with it before.
demiurgencyAug 26, 2010
"It's atrocious. Nothing works. "
You did manage to post this comment. But I agree, it's a step backward.
smacksawAug 26, 2010
I emailed them several times during the beta to say that I want to see all comments regardless of count, but they don't seem to care. If there is a comment that is -5, that's it. You can't choose to see all comments, only -5.
Clearly they want us spending less time commenting and more time consuming as many articles as possible.
philbertAug 26, 2010
It's not bugs, it's the design of the site, the way things work now. Like the removal of Bury and the big changes made to the profile page.
rossisdeadAug 26, 2010

I visited Reddit for the first time today.
Why is My News the default tab? I don't need to see my own comments and stories I've already dugg.
Why do stories now show when they were submitted on the front page?
Why is everything on one page and you have to click "load more" and scroll down. Then if you click a story, then click back on your browser, it's all reset and you have to start from scratch.
Why is the comment box in light blue so I can barely read what I'm writing right now?
Why is so much real estate taken up by the categories tabs on the left side of the screen instead of up top?
Why replace thumbs up and down with arrows?
Why can't I bury stories? Sponsors didn't like it?
philbertAug 26, 2010
My News shows not just your stuff but stuff from everyone you follow, similar to Twitter's main feed. You just happen to be one of those people you follow for some reason.
You can't bury stories as was told to be by Digg support. Now you can hide stories by clicking the x that appears to the right of the Story title when you hover over it. For some reason Digg thinks hiding is better than actually burying.
cglassAug 26, 2010
You also forgot another HUGE one dune (I agree with everything you wrote):
Why is the Reply button RIGHT next to the words xx Reply - Top reply has xx diggs.
The reply button should not have moved, it's VERY VERY confusing to find and at a glance I've clicked the replies 5-6 times already instead of the button to reply!
P.s. I'm going to actually go browse Reddit for the first time seriously.
f**k this digg, I can't stand it, no pages to browse, I can't figure out what I've read or not in previous days.
Peace out.

I can't see how many diggs my comments got on a list anymore. I pay attention to what comments were appreciated and which ones were not to make better comments. Since I don't have a practical way of checking anymore, I will be putting a poison pill in all of my comments so they get dugg down to oblivion. It doesn't really matter because I don't have a good way of checking anymore.

Kevin WTF!? No 'Bury', no 'Upcoming', no filtering by different media types (Pic/Video)? I can deal with the different channels of sold out stories but let us at least bury them & get an organic channel of actual user-submissions.
I expected more. Killing your own culture.
novenatorAug 26, 2010
Killing the bury is probably not a bad thing due to the excessive gaming of some groups, but I miss the other stuff quite a bit.
philbertAug 26, 2010
There's no need to kill "bury" if they come up with better algorithms to fight gaming. If I don't like a story I should be able to bury it, just like comments.
falconearAug 26, 2010
Removing the bury on stories is a good idea. It's the solution to all the craziness you uncovered in the first place. As to the rest...ask me in a few days if I'm still lost.
Closed AccountAug 27, 2010
Counter strategy: Do Diggers like the DPs?
- The only people who like what the Digg Patriots do are the DPs.
- Put a tab for the “Most Buried News” in 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days.
- Let the Digg and Bury War Begin!!!
ajajadudeAug 26, 2010
I hate the lack of an "Upcoming" section. A lot. I also hate how the Frontpage is pretty much non-existent. I keep seeing old crap and crap I wasn't interested in the first time I saw it.
Boo this s**t.
robdazombaAug 26, 2010
These changes seem so undercooked. I'm hitting way too many WTF moments.
I finally figured out how to see my comments on a given story but how do you view them in context (i.e., with responses and whatnot)?
Jordan117Aug 26, 2010
How does the new Digg suck? Let me count the ways.
The lack of a bury button. The lack of a report button on comments. The publisher-driven dynamic over user-driven submission. The arrow buttons instead of thumbs. The broken search. The "reset" of digg counts on old stories. The downplaying of the front page. The reduced edit time on comments. The removal of the Upcoming section. The removal of Favorites. The deprecation of the old API, which broke tools like the Neaveru comment tracker (which means I can no longer easily access my comment history). The removal of the front page RSS feed. The overall bugginess. The fact that I will now have to start my social news life over at Reddit after investing more than three years in building a reputable profile and history on Digg.
swellinAug 26, 2010
I dont know who you are, but f**kin eh you speak the truth, how could they butcher digg like this? And what the f**k is with the Arrows? The thumbs were synonymous with digg every 3rd party page has them f**k this s**t.

apparently there is also now a limit on how many (up arrow formerly know as thumbs up) that you can do in a unspecified time. WTF? limiting comments, OK. but thumbs up?
crazyredivanAug 26, 2010
Really? That's totally ridiculous.
...fix this Digg, because Reddit is ugly as s**t. But right now, it's better looking than this monstrosity.
diggsmckenzieAug 26, 2010
I would digg you up (arrow you up?), but apparently I need to slow down because I almost lost on oxe...

New digg means all the stories are going to come from big news sites. Say goodbye to unique stories from small sites.
dinglebuttAug 26, 2010
you mean s**tty blog spam? oh, the horror

It seems like the new Digg is set up so that only the biggest Diggers with thousands of followers will ever get a story on the main page. Unfortunately that is going to have a dramatic effect on how commercial the stories are compared to how interesting.

BYE GUYS I AM OFF TO REDDIT!!! I heard there is a grease monkey script to make it not rape your eyes...
Oh... and I loved digg...
but this sucks big time now...
antdudeAug 26, 2010

The new Digg pages load faster but that's about the only improvement. I'm very disappointed with the new update. Especially since problems I brought up during the alpha are still exactly the same.

How many people think that from the new colors and social networking design it looks like Digg wants to be bought by Facebook.
chileangodAug 26, 2010
I opened a reddit account. I'm forcing myself to rewire my brain to get their site mecanics. I've been a memebr of digg since 2006 and this new digg just kills it for me. I'm off to discover a new site. I'm willing to give reddit a go rather to endure what digg has become.
RIP DIGG... thanks for all the memories.
cglassAug 26, 2010
Same Here, I think I've been a member since 2006 as well, but I can't seem to find that on here anymore. If that doesn't sum up why I'm going to find a new place to get my fix.
See you there chilean.

Say goodbye to the Digg Effect. The chances that small sites will make it to the front page is mostly gone ;(
liltbrockieAug 26, 2010
Impossible i'd say
demiurgencyAug 26, 2010
Interesting. Can you explain? Is it because of the social aspects pushed on the site.... or is it just that no one be using Digg anymore?
sq2shooterAug 26, 2010
Because the front page will be controlled by large media outlets with hundreds if not thousands of followers. They autosubmit a story and it shows up in the feeds of all these users who will digg it to the top. Meanwhile some smaller site with just a handful of followers comes out with an incredibly interesting and thought provoking article. But it only shows up on the feeds of the few who follow it and there is no way for others to find it since there is no way to look at new submissions from the entire site. And there you have it. The big company gets dugg to the top and the small site with a great story languishes in obscurity because nobody has access to the story except for the few who know the site and already follow it. In a nutshell, this arrangement guarantees large news agencies with a recognizable name almost a sure shot to the top and almost insurmountable odds against the little guy who actually has fantastic content. Thus furthering Diggs decline into basically just a site that feeds you paid content by those who can afford it.

in the comment settings, i want an option to show ALL comments....not just 5, 0 or -5.... old digg had the option to hide no comments. that's what i want again.
