'My News' is part of the problem, not the solution. By pushing all new users to it, you are essentially diluting the Frontpage, the powerhouse of Digg's influence. Not every user wants to be part of the curating process and the best way to entice them to stay & use the platform is to present the Frontpage, which usually is the hub showcasing the most interesting pieces of content decided by the community. The current format does nothing more than split users across different parts of the site, being 'Newswire' , ' Newsroom' & 'My News'. This degrades synergy across the community. Users who wish to Digg, will Digg, however you have to be conscious that the majority of the community merely want to read & bounce, and some will eventually be converted from readers into curators.
Digg V3 worked because it was simple, if you want to digg upcoming stuff, you go to the upcoming section, if you didn't, well you have the Frontpage... it worked, and although I applaud this new feature, it simply breaks away from the KISS principle. I hope Matt shakes things up radically, there is no shame in looking back, sometimes you need to reflect on what worked in the past to get things right in the future.

Fair enough, but the KISS principle seems to apply just fine for me in v4. My News, Top News, Newswire....that shouldn't overwhelm anyone in my opinion. V3 had many, many more places to roam. Digg labs, friend activity was very detailed.....
I think the default view for anyone is Top News, which is the right way to structure things. The less frequent users want to see that. Those of us who are on the site frequently appreciate the additional features that roll out lately. Any improvement to My News is a plus.

While testing the feature I ended up with the old MyNews for a couple days and it was ever so slightly heartbreaking until it launched for everyone. I've really found my MyNews experience much improved, including higher quality content in the Newsroom section and much more dynamic content in the MyNews Recent section.

Couldn't agree more.

I saw your new newsbar earlier today, but it suddenly reverted back to the old one in a few hours. THE NEW NEWSBAR LOOKS FABULOUS!

I like it a lot as well. We're testing it for a few days, if all goes well it should get a widespread launch soon.

Damn shame that digg still refuses to allow it's users to remove/block followers but keeps pushing out useless features.
bossm4nMar 1, 2012
What's up with the Newswire showing 6 day old submissions lately? At times, it's pointless to even browse through there because there is nothing recent.
neondistractionMar 1, 2012
Great, now can you guys do something about the spam all over the comments?
kingliamMar 1, 2012
The new MyNews IS a lot nicer and more improved from the old one, but what I don't get is why the "Trending in My News" section keeps such old articles in there for so long. I have a 'trending' article in there (at the top of the list) that has been there for 14 days. I'm kind-of tired of looking at it--and I'm pretty sure it's not 'trending' anymore.

I never understood the difference between My News, Newswire, and Newsrooms and still don't but at least the NewsBar has been greatly improved. That thing is the only thing done right so far in V5 and will be the future of Digg if you just throw some Next/Prev buttons on it and let visitors "scroll" through each story.

Hey Digg...
We're all happy you're doing a much better job now. But for God sake, get rid of the redirect frame / top nav.. it off-sets my screen size, loads slower and down right pisses me off every time I have to close it!!
paulhulettFeb 29, 2012Staff
You can disable the Newsbar by going to your settings page, selecting the Viewing Digg tab and setting "View External Links" to "Open Without Newsbar". (You could also use this link to go straight there if logged in: http://digg.com/settings/preferences )
blydchyldFeb 29, 2012
My god thank you, you guys should really disable this and have it as an opt in function.
it's just horrible.
iv12kFeb 29, 2012
i think im the only one that likes the Newsbar :/
paulhulettFeb 29, 2012Staff
I can certainly understand why some of our most loyal readers don't get a lot of value out of the Newsbar - after all, by definition our loyal readers don't need a link to the next story, they are visiting multiple links from the story list! However, our recent growth in pageviews and engagement is in large part due to exposing new users to content via the Newsbar - especially with the Timeline integration. We will continue to make opt-out an option for users who dislike the feature, but please realize that we are working hard at (and currently succeeding at) growing the community with new features.
blydchyldFeb 29, 2012
and don't think for a second us old schoolers don't appreciate it!
shroomtimeMar 1, 2012
If you guys make that story list on the top right drop down right when the user hovers over and use some Ajax to make the stories load faster, you'll probably get more than double the amount of clicks.
Less clicks user have to make = more engagement.

What I'd love to get rid of is the bar on the bottom (feedback/survey). If I scroll up or down on my tablet, it stays put for a few seconds right in the middle of the screen, then pops back down when the page is finally loaded.
dajobeMar 1, 2012Staff
which tablet are you using - brand, model, OS and version?
bdbrMar 1, 2012
HP TouchPad v3.0.5. I know, I know... :-)

Still a craptastic hack from the days of Geocities. Quit iframing and act like adults, not tweenies popping their 'Net cherry.
neondistractionMar 1, 2012
Digg, now with 50% more spam!
doodlemasterFeb 29, 2012
It's a shame My News is a..."feature" I don't use. I just like seeing as many articles as I can.
Let me know when you guys plan on updating your comment system though. Every thread these days devolves into a political debate and it's getting annoying....
gameondiggerFeb 29, 2012
Great job on the new feature digg!
But again you got to pop more stories specially in Gaming. Its like a ghost town.
kylescousinMar 1, 2012
Everything is better than having the gaming section stuffed with gamingbolt spam...
You are part of the problem by spamming worthless, stolen stuff to the frontpage.
bdbrFeb 29, 2012
LESS FILLING!
Thanks guys.
