Apple's switch from corporate computing to consumer electronics as a focus is really paying off when it comes to market share.
macparrotOct 26, 2010
I don't think I'd call it a switch as much a progression from the iPod (their first real big hit since the Mac).

Linkbait.
Throw in Apple and Microsoft and watch the hits jump. Here's the facts as I see them. Apple has nearly doubled their market-share over the last 5 years almost entirely in the consumer space which is much harder to sell to than the business space. Business is all about Windows and Office. That's fine, Microsoft made a standard and if there's one thing that most businesses like it's consistency. Dell and HP and nearly every other PC makers races to the bottom in cost, usually at the expense of quality. As a commodity that gets replaced every 3 years who cares right?
The consumer market is very different. You need computers that will last 3-5 years. Apple makes that as does Dell and HP (and others), but not at that 300 to 500 dollar range that keeps getting thrown out when people blather about how expensive Macs are. Even at the higher end, Apple computers still command a higher price, but it's perceived (rightly or wrongly) that they are better computers.
Microsoft has little to worry about from Apple in the desktop/laptop space. They won that battle a long time ago. The new battle is in the mobile space and we'll see if (even at higher prices) Apple or Microsoft (or Google for that matter) can gather the kind of market-share that MS has enjoyed in years past.

"Are mobile devices taking over tasks that used to be done by PCs?"
We all enjoy our mobile devices. They're convenient, easy to use and even productive. Having said that, who in the world would ever use their mobile devices over a computer for work projects or school projects?

Instant messaging, email and social networking used to be done by PC's and are now increasingly moving to mobile devices.

If it truly was a Monopoly, there wouldn't be Mac OS or Linux
shingoexOct 27, 2010
OK...I guess someone thinks Mac OS and Linux are fictional
macparrotOct 27, 2010
Just because the courts ruled it a monopoly doesn't mean there weren't any other choices. Go read about some of their business practices from that time period.

Numbers lie all the time!

It isn't Apple versus Microsoft. It is Microsoft versus itself. Microsoft can't do it. If you have to ask if mobile devices are taking over tasks that are done by PCs, you're not asking the right questions and you don't understand your potential customer's needs. Microsoft doesn't think tethering is important. They don't think people tether their smart phones. That is an indication that Microsoft doesn't understand.
