"Why would customers want to stream content to their Xbox when they already have that content on their TV? That's where Microsoft's voice search, motion navigation and user interface come in."
Because most cable companies are raping the wallets of their customers, just take a look at comcast's pricing. It's ridiculous. And it's been a long dream of consumers to get ala-cart channel selection, if Xbox can offer this up I for one would certainly be interested in moving over to it. If I could hook up a external drive to my xbox and use it as a DVR that would be huge.

Unfortunately that's exactly why this could never work. The cable networks and providers have done an unfortunately great job at making sure that no matter what alternatives you think you have, they'll still end up getting your money no matter what.

There's a 50% chance your broadband connection is ... cable. Looks like they'll still own you.

Cable company issues are with identity. They don't want to be dumb pipe bit providers which is what they have become best at.

It's called Lobbying and the Corporate Ownership of the US elected officials. Whatever will drive down costs and is good for the consumer, hell no Comcast calls up their bought Representatives and tells them to pass a law banning whatever threatens Comcasts bottom line.

Unfortunately you'll just pay for this via price hikes to your stand alone internet connection.
You'll need at least 15-20mbits/s to stream HD video, and at present ComCast charges you $60-$70/month for that depending on where you live and if you lease a modem.
This will easily go up to $100/month if people start abandoning their TV subscriptions in favor of hulu, netflix, vudu, itunes, and now xbox TV.
The only way this regional monopoly will be broken is if Microsoft, Google, and Apple do something about it, or there is a wireless data breakthrough which suddenly allows Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Virgin, and Verizon (and a handful of others) to provide national wireless data that directly competes with the speed and reliability of cable and DSL internet.

How much of your cable bill is retained by the cable company, versus how much is sent right on to the cable channels?
baldkat82Sep 19, 2011
Wrong. Cabl;e providers pay per subscriber to the content providers.
agmlauncherSep 19, 2011
Do you guys live on a different planet than I do? It is a fact that ISPs make more money from cable TV subscribers than internet subscribers.
This is where the net neutrality debate comes in. Comcast doesn't want you watching YouTube, Hulu, or Netflix in lieu of being a cable subscriber because they aren't making advertising dollars off of you or the insanely high rates they charge just to access that advertising......
It is a conflict of interest for a cable TV provider to also provide internet.

I do not like financing political propaganda. But that's what my family is almost unknowingly doing by having no alternative to the way cable companies package content.
I would very much like to see an a la carte service where I pick which channels I will finance with my subscription money. Huge cable bills are due to the present monopoly plus package distribution. I don't care if Microsoft or Netflix or the content producers themselves break this model.
I just want a distribution method which:
* Keeps my wife happy
* Doesn't force me to pay for content whose political propaganda I do not wish to finance with my subscription dollars.
There is insufficient competition in content distribution in my opinion.
maquereautinSep 18, 2011
This is why I don't have cable or satellite TV. Because I would only watched maybe 15 channels out of the 400 I would get after I add all the packages to get the channels I want. Comedy Central shows are free online. I have ESPN3 on my xbox now. Just about satisfies my wants.

Goodbye Playstation :(
cjmnewsSep 19, 2011
The details a bit sketchy in the article. There are some questions:
1. Will it be included in XBox Live Gold? (probably not)
2. Will it have the capability to be a DVR? (probably not)
3. Assuming it can be a DVR, can it record while playing games? (probably not)
4. Assuming it will be an additional cost, can we choose which channels we want to pay for? (probably not)
5. Will there be some server side storage of shows for 2-3 weeks so we can access content on our schedule? (probably not)
