Looks like the famous hacker Eric S. Raymond came to the same conclusion: http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=2895
jmprocaJan 28, 2011
Microsoft is primarily a software company... Why would they adopt Android? This article makes no sense.
jnajeraJan 28, 2011
Agree, and why does Dvorak still have a job? Mr. Dvorak, MSFT does not need to adopt Open Source, they need to ditch backwards compatibility and release a new OS developed from scratch.
spartan8103Jan 28, 2011
I agree with you. They should release a new OS from scratch and use virtualization for backwards compatibility. So any company that needs legacy application support can launch the application in XP Mode (like what they have put into Windows 7)
kazimierasJan 28, 2011
That is what they did for Phone 7 (well cept the virtualization). It lacks backwards compatability even though its core is somewhat based on the previois mobile version (6.5)
faasnatJan 30, 2011
Sounds like what Apple did when they released OS X with Classic for legacy apps. If Microsoft did this, just how many more times will we be hearing about Microsoft copying Apple.
spartan8103Jan 30, 2011
I did some reading about the Classic Environment and it does sound like they did do some virtualization of some sort (Wikipedia did not mention the word virtualization, but it did some similar).
Unfortunately, I do not see any other way Microsoft could move forward with a brand new OS and still maintain some kind of backwards compatibility. However, I have not heard anyone say Microsoft copied Apple with XP Mode that is already inside Windows 7 so perhaps the criticism would be minimal.
weirddemonJan 28, 2011
Good question. Dvořák is a tool.
beerhoundJan 28, 2011
I wonder that myself. MS doesn't make the phones, they want to license their OS to Samsung, Moto, LG, HTC, etc. They want to take a cut of an app store like Apple and Google. They want to generate mobile traffic for Bing and take a slice of the mobile ad pie. MS wants to use their OS to leverage those other things, they lose that if they adopt another OS.
yurmutha412Jan 28, 2011
Not really. They've developed Word for Mac for a long time and made good money at it. Their problem is they still believe they need to control the OS. They need to focus on mobile apps that work well with Microsoft apps. Most people still have PC's which are 90% Microsoft. They've lost the mobile race. If they aren't careful, they could lose the desktop.
nickconferJan 28, 2011
Agreed. From what I hear the Windows 7 phone is good, but its missing a lot of common features. The big two I can think of right off the bat are visual voice mail and multi-tasking...
I bet they come out swinging with the next version though. They'll be playing catchup just like Google did with Android.
Seeing that their UI is different, and they are just like Android releasing on multiple phones, I don't see why they couldn't eventually be number two or three in the market.
ethicsappliedJan 28, 2011
People said android would never catch up to iOS but it's still playing ball, there's no reason WP7 can't catch on. I'd say webOS dies before WP7, which I think would still be sad even tho I'd never use a device with it.
spuy767Jan 28, 2011
I don't see why people still pull out this argument. A full two thirds of the android phones that are being "sold" are being given away with 2 year contracts. Apple doesn't give away phones. These phones are hardly more than feature phones with a touch screen. Comparing the adoption of a free OS that runs on random phone hardware from the cheapest s**t to phones that cost more than the iPhone, not to mention being available on EVERY CARRIER, to an operating system that is only sold with hardware at a premium price and hitherto being available on a single carrier is a logical farce at best.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ethicsappliedJan 28, 2011
And guess what, Android is a popular OS because they're on EVERY CARRIER. Apple creates a great product just as they always have by controlling the software and hardware. Android is doing great by allowing it on a multitude of devices. Just because it's two different approches, doesn't mean we can't compare them.

sevenvtJan 28, 2011
I know right? I just have to laugh out loud when he writes about Microsoft... embracing linux and android. Like saying Google should embrace Bing as their search provider...
aimeeroostJan 28, 2011
Probably coz their own products crash too much and they finally realize that people have a choice now!
elimgarakJan 28, 2011
Right. The guy is a retard. He wants Office to be open source? That's one of the two main cash cows of MS. What would be the business model of MS making Android phones?
boburJan 28, 2011
I remember reading years ago an article saying that Microsoft should stop using NT kernel and create a linux based system. I can't help but wonder if it's this guy...
I think Windows Phone 7 has gone too quiet though. They should be releasing software updates to fix any problems and enable the functionality needed to compete with other phones. If that doesn't come soon then there will be an even steeper hill to clime!
ethicsappliedJan 28, 2011
Apparently one's coming out early to mid February and another one I think is slated for mid to late this year. But I do wish there was a hard date for these things.
superkendallJan 28, 2011
I still wouldn't count Microsoft out, they have WAY too much money and knowledge of how important this platform is to the future to give up. They will be pumping money into handset makers to keep supporting it and I think soon larger ad campaigns, as this is the product that Cannot Fail.
They do have a rough road ahead against Android and the iPhone though, since neither of THOSE companies are standing still, and I'm not sure Microsoft has the quality of people anymore that can keep, never mind catch, up.
rblancarteJan 28, 2011
I want to agree with you on this, but I can't.
The problem I see with MS is that they lack the thinking that allows for iOS and Android to flourish. They want to have a mobile OS that has similar functionality as Windows desktop. And it just doesn't work. MS can't see them as completely independent things.
As far as money - sure they can throw money at this problem, but if they lose ground, they are simply throwing money in a hole that is getting bigger.
rexfelislocJan 28, 2011
There is nothing similar to WP7 and Win desktop apps except for the language, IDE, and .NET library similarities. The function very differently and the phone has far more restrictions as an environment.
stubearJan 28, 2011
Bulls**t. Have you used WP7? It couldn't be further from the desktop UI in look and feel if they tried. It takes some getting used to but the Metro UI is quite nice and allows for some clean apps. My iPhone looks rather cluttered and dated by comparison, especially when looking at apps made by the same company for each platform. Even MS Office for WM7 takes the Metro UI to heart and ditches a desktop like mentality.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

What stupid advice. The smart phone market place is still in its infancy. Most people still don't have smart phones.
I'm sorry but if Microsoft is good at anything its entering an already crowded market and eventually finding its place. XBOX and Search (Bing) are all great examples of areas that took Microsoft time to gain market share. The XBOX is perhaps the best example because when they first released the gaming machine sales were not only awful, but the chorus of this kind of poor journalism writing obituaries for a brand new product vs well defined products was all over the place.
I'm no Windows 7 phone user... but I admire Microsoft for trying something different. I can't help but be hopeful for their success as well. We really could use 3 strong competitors for the future of the smart phone market.
izzmoJan 28, 2011
This article is retarded.. second sentence he writes, "I haven't even seen one of these phones, but people who have seen one tell me that it's actually a very nice device." Are you s**tting me? f**k this guy.

obviously i was buried by the hired guns of microsoft. i doesn't take a baby to realize that microsoft is paying for ads to be displayed on digg. and that means it probably has maybe 5+ employees scanning these boards to make sure the ads are correctly displayed and simultaneously that no1 trash talks their product.
all of my points were 100% valid and are the primary reasons why this phone will not overtake the iphone. who are you to talk when you don't even have a windows phone?
also, by saying that its acceptable (to automatically import my contacts) because the android does it is plain stupid. just cause android sucks doesn't mean the windows phone has to as well. i seriously opened my hotmail and deleted ALL my contacts to FIX the issue. obviously this need to be ADDRESSED, otherwise I (and the masses who are also bothered by this) will never ever recommend this phone to anyone else
glacierelementMay 1, 2011
Yep download this patch today (it was 2 months late), watched the patch download then watched install bar go completely through the entire installation process. My phone is auto-restarted to prepare for awesome new copy/paste abilities AND *drum roll* it tells me that there is update available for my phone and nothing has changed. VICTORY!

as a developer with both silverlight and j2me app dev experience, i can tell you that developing apps for windows phone takes about 1/5 of the time it takes to develop blackberry apps! the only thing that will happen this year is that the dev community will embrace windows phones fully, and will abandon blackberry's en masse.

If it fails I hope they bring the Xbox Live features to Android phones. That was the main reason I was going to switch when my contract was finished.
generalobviousJan 28, 2011
I like how the article implies that it's an opinion.
Windows Phone 7, or whatever the f**k you wanna call it, is a failure. Microsoft have always sucked in the phone market. Windows Mobile was awful.
They only exist because their products are forced down people's throats due to their juggernaut presence built entirely on past success, not because they provide any true innovation in the tech world.
Bing is a great example of this. It's not a great search engine at all - but it's forced upon everyone and heavily marketed that the ONLY reason it's in the "top search engine" bracket is because the people who don't know any better are using it.
Doesn't mean it's successful, it just means they're great at deceptive marketing.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

pentiumiiJan 29, 2011
your wrong
bing has one great advantage over Google
that being has less spam wile searching
spam has become a huge problem for Google in fact there are web site and ad ons and all sorts of tips and tricks to get around this problem
It has gotten that bad the we actually need ad ons and tips and trick
hacker and Ad companies know how Google rate web site and they use that
to get there links to the top of the page
i have actually ran a search on Google and had the first 3 page be all spam links
wast until the almost the middle of the page 4 page
before i final got a link on what i was actually looking for
same search on BING
got it on the first page yes some spam but still way less
If Google doesn't get the spam under control i can see people switching to bing very easily
Plus Bing Video and Pic search blow Google out the water
As of now i use both Google and Bing because that seam to be the way to get what i i am looking for faster
generalobviousJan 28, 2011
I will, however, give you a chance to redeem yourself in front of this audience by stating the innovations in technology that both Windows Phone 7 and Bing have brought to the table that others haven't done in the decade prior to their existence.

Way to try to change the subject. Who cares about innovation?
Bing is a great search engine. I type in something, it gives me very good results. It sends me the web site I was thinking of, but was just in the tip of my tongue. It sends me to interesting sources of information. It is fast. It is useful. It does everything anyone would ever want from a search engine.
Phone 7 is a great device. The UI is clean, easy to understand, and easy to use. The aps work fine, it has good reception, and the audio is fine. The integration with other online sources, like facebook, is a nice feature. It is nice to have contact information automatically kept up to date, pictures changing, and all that. The Phone 7 is a perfectly good device. It is a very nice smart phone.
Again, you are just trying to be an elitist and complain for the sake of complaining. Again, this isn't cute.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
generalobviousJan 28, 2011
"Way to try to change the subject. Who cares about innovation?"
Hahaha... woo. Nevermind. You had a chance and blew it opening with that line.
So back to the drawing board: either you're completely inept or a troll. Going with the latter.
melthornalJan 28, 2011
Again, with elitism. I do not care about whatever lead to a product. I want a product that works now. I put it in my hands, it works. Period. This describes bing and Phone 7. You can use whatever weak excuses you can dream up about this or that, but at the end of the day, who gives a crap? I want a device that works. If it works, fine. I don't care how or why it works. I don't care who invented what. I just want it to fulfill my needs. If it does, great. If it doesn't, I find something else that does.
Bing is a great search engine. it searches. It finds relevant results.
Phone 7 is a great smart phone. It has all the features I look for in a smart phone. It is clean, easy to use, and reasonably priced.
If they don't have a feature you want, too bad. Find something else. But nothing about either of these products is inherently bad. They are both perfectly fine. They serve a role, have a function, and do what they do well.
I'm sure you have some fanboy elitist bulls**t to say about this, and honestly I don't care to listen any further.
You, sir, are an elitist troll. Which is the worst type of troll, because you actually think you are important. In reality, you are nothing.
dannyd7139Jan 28, 2011
I haven't tried their new phone but I can say without a doubt in my mind that bing is a superior search engine. The results are very well laid out and it isn't full of ads unlike some other popular engines. On top of that, it hasn't been funded by the CIA in the past, which gives me peace of mind. I don't need my search results and ip address to be sent to some data analyst for logging.
stubearJan 28, 2011
Bing offered page previews for each search result (on mouse over I believe). Google does this now so I'm guessing they felt it was a nice enough feature to copy outright.
The Metro UI is extremely innovative. You might not personally like it but that doesn't make it any less innovative.
XBOX Live integration in WM7 is going to be one of the saving graces for WM7. The Game Center on iOS is a poorly conceived copy of OpenFeint which was a poorly conceived copy of XBOX Live on the 360. The lessons learned for the XBOX Live on the 360 console are going to make this feature a lot better and more innovative then anything on Android or iOS.
I'm sure I could go on but why waste the time since you'll probably jump and and offer your opinion as reasons why these aren't innovative. Save yourself the time and look up innovation in the dictionary before posting anything though.
charlotte_webJan 28, 2011
The main thing that Window Phone 7 has going for it is the Microsoft name; brand recognition. They don't have many apps, and the OS is lacking features that Android and iOS have had for a while now.
Given that, Microsoft has a long, tough slog ahead of them to establish marketshare. They can't claim their traditional high ground here, such as having the most apps or being the OS that runs on a multitude of hardware.
melthornalJan 28, 2011
It doesn't have the most aps, no. But the aps it does have are pretty good, and honestly I wouldn't want or need too many more. In fact, I can't really think of more aps. The functionality built into the phone and os are perfectly fine for everything I would need it for. I find the vast majority of aps for iphone and android to be more of a gimmick than anything else.
I see uses for all of the phones. They have strengths and weaknesses. I don't think any one platform is inherently better or worse than another. They aren't all designed to compete for the exact same groups of people, which seems to be what a lot of critics are assuming. Not all of the phones have the same features, some do certain features better than others, but all the phones have their place.
For me, the order would be Phone 7, Android, iOS. For others the order may be different. But really, it doesn't matter. They are all quality products (assuming you don't get one of the super cheap crappy androids). If you were to give me one (of these) free phone at random, I wouldn't mind which one I ended up with.
