Stand-up meetings don't really need to be done face to face. Everyone joins a common chat, and sends a message with two elements (what I did, what I'm doing) when they join. Then the chat remains open for people to discuss things that might be holding each other back. No need to have a moderator for this.
Stand up meetings. Not just for the military any more. I do wonder if power dynamics are altered by "stand ups." Are the tall and the glib advantaged (more) by faster meetings?
Meetings in general are largely pointless and frequently poorly executed.
I have found them to be organized/initiated by people who:
1. love the sound of their own voice.
2. Need to "feel" like they are working, because they don't really do anything at all when they are just sitting at their desks.
3. Want to tell other people what they are doing so that they can figure it out for themselves...
4. Will monopolize the meeting to tell people about their weekend, and then spend the rest of the time tapping away on their blackberry when anyone else gets a chance to talk...
Sitting is not synonymous with sloth in the tech industry. Developers normally sit during their work and don't like standing for long periods of time. The idea behind standing during these meetings is to make people uncomfortable and therefore keep the meeting short.

nice idea to keep meetings short. less talking (read: face-to-face meetings/phone conversations) and more working is good in numerous ways
