Cheer up. You'll be able to use it to upgrade to Lion or whatever they will call it.

Let's hope one doesn't need to do an archive and install, either.
angelbunnyOct 17, 2010
I use a thumb drive to install OSX. It is so much easier to work with than a dvd. Also, much easier to install a hackintosh with a thumb drive since files can be altered pre install.
hipmanOct 16, 2010
Wow good for you, you are so hip and savy.....
cornlucasOct 16, 2010
Thats not the optical drive. Thats where you put the money in it to make it go.
generalerror324Oct 16, 2010
DVD drives are still useful for burning copies of things for friends I find.
ACuriousRabbitOct 16, 2010
Flash drives hold way more, take up less space, are more durable, faster and reusable.
generalerror324Oct 16, 2010
But not cheaper, when it comes to lending things out, I'd rather burn a movie on something they can keep. It also doesn't matter if they lose it.
jorgenvOct 16, 2010
I completely agree. I never ever use it.
mrzaikoOct 16, 2010
So you are telling me that the ONLY difference between a current 15inch macbook pro and a Macbook air. is the disk drive? What about performance? Come on TechCrunch! What a douchie article...
elmuerte17Oct 16, 2010
Mac users don't care about "performance," they just want something shiny and slim, and cost be damned.
angelbunnyOct 17, 2010
I think you misunderstand. The point is the new macbook air coming out should have the same hardware as a macbook/macbook pro give-or-take.
volaitle86Oct 16, 2010
lol, you have a macbook. that's problem 1, you rich f**k
thecollective00Oct 16, 2010
I use my dvd-rom drive all the time...to install video games. Oh that's right, it's a Mac, you can't play games on a Mac...
Closed AccountOct 17, 2010
I'm surprised you can play games at all with all the malware out there.
diggidoreOct 17, 2010
programmers dont make malwares anymore. they make apple apps for all the apple users who don't know how to program and get rich.
thecollective00Oct 17, 2010
lol I have never gotten a virus ever on my windows machine, and I don't even use anti-virus software. Just common sense and a little basic knowledge.

manny..let's play a game. There are two people. Both people due hte eXACT same thing. (In this case, use a Windows PC) Person A has problems. (This person is you.) PErson B never has a problem.
Tell me...which person is the worthless f**k who should not be operating simple machines and which one is the smarter one.
Seems to me that when one person has problems with something that another one can use perfectly fine, that it is the person who HAS the problems that is the dumb f**k.

I guess nobody caught the irony in my statement. Bravo Diggiots.
alexthehoopyOct 18, 2010
I think you meant DRM, not malware.
Not that there's much of a difference anymore.
Closed AccountOct 18, 2010
They're easily interchangeable. ;)
tenecursumOct 17, 2010
People still use DVD-Roms? Have you never heard of Steam? Or do you enjoy roller coaster tycoon too much?
the4thaggieOct 16, 2010
I ran into this problem on my netbook the other day when Ubuntu 10.10 came out. Being an IT guy, flash storage is a waste of time on today's home network or business network. I wanted to install Ubuntu, but alas I had neither a flash drive or an optical drive. Flash drives are a waste of money for just an Ubuntu install. So I just jailbroke my old iPhone to act like a USB storage and did the install from there. Could have used a PXE boot server, but meh.
davidtcOct 17, 2010
I don't use something on my computer, guess I should write an article about it too.

What he f**k is hte point of this article?
angelbunnyOct 17, 2010
that a new macbook air is coming out since it has been about 2 years. About damn time.
Closed AccountOct 17, 2010
Why about time ? Generaly total filures don't have followups AT ALL. And there is no other way to look at it. The Macbook Air was a complete failure. It would have been a failure compared to pre-iPod Apple sales numbers. And compared to typical Apple sales in the last 4 years or so, it was even more of one.
Closed AccountOct 17, 2010
Also..the original MAcBook Air didn't fail miserably becuase it was ahead of heh curve. It failed miserably because Steve Jobs thought he could dictate what his custoemrs wanted rather than custoemrs telling him what to offer. And he found out hee was wrong.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I don't ever use the End key on my keyboard, it's a massive f**king waste of a key. what were they thinking when they put it on there...
