fluvioSep 14, 2010
dude, try Settings -> Brightness & Wallpaper -> Brightness
you are *clearly* at 50%
jeffdabeatSep 14, 2010
It's sad when the most you can do to knock the iPad is talk about sun glare...
johnnysoftwareSep 14, 2010
News flash: reading a book outside under a bright sun can be a little hard on the eyes too, making it hard as in uncomfortable to read. Most reading is done indoors for a reason.
I agree with @jeffdabeat
cqlivingstonSep 13, 2010
I have a Kindle and I love it.
icematrixSep 14, 2010
iPad + library card ftw
inajeepSep 14, 2010
Same here but it seems to me that Apple can come back and shoot the same commercial in the dark and the iPad would win. Of course the woman in the bikini could be nude instead.
dvddesignSep 14, 2010
Or just have the person not read, but doing anything else, like watch a movie, listen to music, surf the web, skype, draw, write...etc
diggimatorSep 16, 2010
You could use iPad flashlight app to resolve that issue.
Or just turn on a light if you're old fashioned.
genericdiggerSep 13, 2010
Kindle is going places
oboySep 13, 2010
Cute ad, but they're still done. Between iPad selling like crazy and Android models coming out, Kindle won't be able to repeat their excellent Christmas last year. Not even close.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
matthewf01Sep 13, 2010
Except for something called the "Kindle for Android" mobile application, currently available in Android Market.
Don't like that? Try nook for Android.
johnb41Sep 14, 2010
I think oboy is talking about the hardware not lasting long. Who wants hardware that ONLY lets you read monotone books when you can have an alternative that does countless things.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
phatlip012Sep 14, 2010
People interested in purchasing an eBook reader. The iPad is a tablet, it's not an eBook reader. Can you read eBooks on it? Yes. You can also do so on laptops, phones etc. That doesn't make them eBook readers either. Someone on a budget. Someone who has no need for an iPad. It just so happens this is a large market of individuals.
pocketjacksSep 14, 2010
Who wants to buy eBooks for an application that locks you into one vendor's device? Try taking your iBooks purchases anywhere else if you decide to leave Apple. You can read Kindle books on your Kindle, iPhone, Android, AND PC.
clbwSep 14, 2010
IPad Ebook platform is open sorced, so you don't have to buy your books from Apple.
pdaisaokSep 13, 2010
Digg v4 = Coke 2. Can we please have the old digg back and maybe just call it Digg Classic??
kalleankaSep 13, 2010
Reading a book on IPhone is to reading a book on the Kindle what digg v4 is to digg v3.
frayedknotjeffSep 13, 2010
So I was on my Kindle the other day and I wanted to watch a full color movie...
bonestampSep 13, 2010
All this ad says is that if you care about reading in direct sunlight, then the choice is obvious. They're not suggesting it can help you watch movies in any way.
frayedknotjeffSep 14, 2010
Doesn't change the fact that I wanted to watch a film in full color. It's okay though, because I grabbed my iPad and I was fine.
whitey22Sep 14, 2010
You shouldn't have bought a Kindle is you wanted to watch movies - it's for reading books.
nedbigbyssgSep 13, 2010
Imagine the Android based tablets that are going to come out. Most Android phones with the AMOLED screen turn invisible with little sunlight.
mesasoneSep 14, 2010
I have an Android phone with an AMOLED screen, and it's actually quite readable in everything but 100% direct sunlight...
Closed AccountSep 29, 2010
don't pay attention to that
characterless dumbsucker
he's a paid apple spammer.
snapcaseSep 14, 2010
I like the TFT LCD screen on the Droid. Much better visibility than the AMOLED screens.
Although the new "Super AMOLED" screens are supposedly better in direct light, I've yet to see it myself, so can't comment on how significant the difference is.
artthouboredSep 13, 2010
iPads and Vampires hate sunlight
WreckedEmSep 14, 2010
iPad user = Twilight fan.
thedude01Sep 14, 2010
Why?
blydchyldSep 14, 2010
if you have to ask that then you sir are not a 'Dude'.
peruvianprinzSep 15, 2010
Welcome to Digg, "Nikki"
deathinplaidSep 13, 2010
Silly commercial... iPad owners don't go outside.
johnnydiggmeSep 13, 2010
They don't talk to women either.
funkrusherSep 14, 2010
I've seen a few female Kindle owners. The knife cuts both ways on this one.
Closed AccountSep 14, 2010
but i thought all Apple users drank coffee in starkbucks with their shiny apply products? which one is it, learn to stereotype properly. i imagine android users talk to women less, since they all seem to be on digg. http://bit.ly/aCOXPk
neosporinSep 14, 2010
Well, here's the dilemma. Hipsters like to drink coffee at starbucks with their shiny apple products. Hipsters also sleep around a lot with different people, and like that article you linked says, "iPhone Owners Have the Most Sex Partners", it just seems to all add up.
I guess we're back to the original stereotype.
Closed AccountSep 15, 2010
and they do all this without going outside? amazing
matthewf01Sep 13, 2010
Frankly I think neither technology (LCD, e-ink) are ready for primetime as "readers".
The "page transition" refreshing of e-ink displays is so slow and jarring, I don't think I'd be comfortable trying to flip around a newspaper everyday using it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bonestampSep 13, 2010
I think the page turning of real pages is much more annoying (and slower).
wolfghostSep 14, 2010
My Kindle displays a new page twice as fast as a physical page turn. Plus no hand passing over the text and distorted curled page.
jagedlionSep 14, 2010
clearly you've never flipped pages in a news paper. That s**t sucks. Hard. (Its loud and it takes like 4 fold/unfolds at least) Assuming you don't hog the seat next to you and quarter your paper.
digg316Sep 13, 2010
f**k sunlight
lonecowSep 13, 2010
Am I the only one who thought that Kindle made an AD that when shown on the iPad it burns the screen when in sunlight?
subzero34gSep 14, 2010
no, I was also disappointed.
gllopcSep 13, 2010
Americans are indoors 95% of the time, so...
wolfghostSep 14, 2010
Probably so, but I read outside on the deck most of the year.
Closed AccountSep 13, 2010
going to buy it.. buts its currently not available in germany :(
wrestlingnrjSep 13, 2010
I guess I'm the only one who prefers old fashioned books, they are perfectly visible in direct sunlight...and no batteries or charging required.
jeremanroxSep 13, 2010
not to mention theres just something treasured about holding paper in your hand. and also, you trust a second hand book a lot further than you trust a second hand electronic device. in the kindles defense, carrying my library around on paper would require a semi lol
peruvianprinzSep 15, 2010
You would certainly hate to live in the "demolition man" times.
polartxSep 14, 2010
cant pirate them, sorry
dvddesignSep 14, 2010
Can we get you a rocking chair, whittling knife, and some balsa wood so you can wax philosophic about how things used to be back in the day?
I liked books too, but I like my ADD-fueled reading binges more. I can switch between 7-8, or 40 books and not have to carry a small library with me where ever I go.
Or try having a full compliment of periodicals with you the next time you go to a doctor's appointment in your ipad. It's all fun and stuff to thumb through that copy of Time sitting in your doc's office, but guess who else has been touching that? (hint: they may not be as healthy as you are!)
aronnycSep 14, 2010
I understand the ad. But...uh...I thought people go outdoors to do outdoor things, like...suntan, swim, you know, stuff you can't do indoors, like...uh...read.
phatlip012Sep 14, 2010
You never read a book by the pool or on the beach? Just laying down getting a tan can get boring. It's nice to have something to do in the mean time whether it's reading, listening to music etc.
dvddesignSep 14, 2010
I never would. Nor would half the readership of Digg.
It's outdoors. As in the non-air conditioned space. And there's bugs, allergies, the SUN,... Even my fiance would rather stay inside.
cornlucasSep 14, 2010
You sound like someone that doesn't read or go outdoors much. When you do them both at the same time, it's a nice experience.
johnnysoftwareSep 14, 2010
Yeah, but after a while the glare of the summer sun off the page gets to be a bit harsh on the eyes. You're not going to get skin cancer reading a book in the living room either.
I agree, it is fun for a while. But the experience wears out its welcome faster than indoors on days when the sun is really bright.
peruvianprinzSep 15, 2010
Reading is as good of an outdoor activity as any of the ones you have mentioned. f**king outdoors is also something worth trying. Don't limit yourself to the norm...
johnb41Sep 14, 2010
That's so true. But i'd still rather have an iPad outside vs a Kindle. Who needs to read a book when you can go on the web, play games, use apps, etc. I find it still usable as long as you polish the screen from all the finger smudges. I find the glare combined with finger smudges far worse than glare alone.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
whitey22Sep 14, 2010
Believe it not people still read books. It's much more intellectually stimulating than the internet and Crazy Birds on an iPad.
sirmasterboySep 14, 2010
People say that but I find reading books to be incredibly boring.
Either way they are equal then. Kindle is better outside, iPad is better in the dark. That would be where I am more interested in using an iPad anyways.
whitey22Sep 15, 2010
Yes, the internet has raised a generation with no attention span. More than 2 paragraphs? tl;dr
Closed AccountSep 14, 2010
so...why not just take a book to the pool? its not as if you're going to read through your entire collection in one sitting.
whitey22Sep 15, 2010
Why not just take a laptop to the pool instead of an iPad?
del129Sep 14, 2010
Your tearing me apart LISA!
Is it just me or does that guy sound like Tommy Wausau?
leeorgSep 14, 2010
Apple should use eInk for the back side of the next iPad (aside from cameras). When you use iBooks, you should be able to turn the iPad around and read the eInk side... Although, from experience I don't think Apple would be the one to do this since it actually "complicates" a product, so maybe an Android tablet maker would create such a monster.
innovatiSep 14, 2010
or howabout a dual-layer display like the Notion Ink Adam? (which is an adroid-based tablet coming out hopefully soon!)
http://www.notionink.in/
It has eINK or regular screen. I'm an iPad owner and I don't fancy eINK too much, but this tablet looks AMAZING as a tablet too!
humperdeathSep 14, 2010
Kindle only costs $139 because of the competition from iPad. Remember 6 months ago the same thing costs $299. Yeah, Kindle is great and all, but dont forget the reaming we got from amazon up until now.
phatlip012Sep 14, 2010
Simple economics. Amazon did nothing wrong.
aeron14Sep 14, 2010
I think you completely forgot about the Nook. B&N came out with a 3G-Less Nook for $149 and not long after Amazon came out with a Kindle for $139. I think this was less about the iPad and more about remaining competitive against the Nook.
humperdeathSep 15, 2010
I suppose Amazon didn't consider 'the nook' to be competition. And I agree, Amazon did nothing wrong, but these are the facts as we know now. Free enterprise is a great thing.
mneinastSep 14, 2010
OH MY GOD WTF HAPPENS AT THE END WITH THAT EVIL LAUGH!!????!!!?????
scemmtSep 14, 2010
...you can put anti-glare/anti-reflective film designed for touch screens.
shadowspawnSep 14, 2010
You can buy it cheaply too. I have a roll of it I found on ebay for around 20 bucks. I think I have about 4 yards left, and it's around 3 ft wide. I put it on one of my windows for the hell of it and it survived the kiddos mauling it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Your special. In a unique way.
danisthSep 14, 2010

apexifiedSep 14, 2010
They're trying to compete with the iPad because, feature-wise, almost all e-ink based devices are on a level playing field. Why mention your real competition when you can point out where you outshine the pseudo-competition?
Closed AccountSep 14, 2010
Books are not "going by the wayside" anytime soon. I hate techy douches who try to make themselves sound like their on the bleeding edge of tech by insinuating books are old and outdated. Books will still be well in use when the Kindle is dead and buried.
ruynSep 14, 2010
I love the ad. Try to explain this to Apple fan boys and they don't get the concept of eInk...
innovatiSep 14, 2010
I'm not exactly an Apple Fanboy, but I do have 4 Apple products (including the iPad) and I don't get the application of eINK even though I understand what it is and what it does.
I think most iPad owners would read on their iPad as much as they would on a Kindle if they had one - the reason they didn't buy an eBook reader is because they aren't eBook readers themselves.
I like the fact that my iPad I bought for web design, browsing, music playing, music creation, games, photos, digital painting has the ability to buy, store, and display eBooks - but that wasn't a selling feature - nor a used feature for me.
What would the iPad be if it couldn't display eBooks?
Now, do I have room in my non-reading life for an eInk dedicated reader? no....I'm so used to getting my reading on digg and the web and wikipedia (backlit screens + informative reading) that reading on ink seems.....I just don't have the stamina.
So I think Kindle and iPad hit different markets
shanafmeSep 14, 2010
She paid way too much for those sunglasses.
penmanshipSep 14, 2010
Where is the bury button again?
polartxSep 14, 2010
in your case, next to the thumbs up
jack92Sep 14, 2010
Just try and go for a swim, your both getting robbed.
heavystoneSep 14, 2010
"your" getting robbed? Really?
dvddesignSep 14, 2010
For the record, I can use my iPad just fine outdoors. The screen isn't the most usable thing, so I wouldn't be watching Dark Knight on it or using the Stargazing application, but for basic text reading, it works just fine outdoors.
Closed AccountSep 14, 2010
so Kindle market = bitches with $140 sunglasses? I'm way below the times my shoes only cost $20.
gypsieSep 14, 2010
Amazon must be desperate.
rtmfengSep 14, 2010
I have a Nook....
heavystoneSep 14, 2010
What a stupid article. Like the ad though. Jobs went off saying the iPad is an ebook reader. Something amazon showed VERY clearly it is NOT!
artiste212Sep 14, 2010
Every try to read a Kindle in bed in a dark bedroom? Where you can't turn on the light so you don't wake up your spouse? No? Well, neither have I. But an iPad works just fine there.
clbwSep 14, 2010
The commercial was a little misleading in that they had the brightness turned all the way down on the IPad. also try using that Kindle when it is dark.
jakatakSep 14, 2010
This is ridiculous. If I am in direct sunlight with a pool and babes, the last thing I am doing is reading. Dumb ass commercial. Kindle's days are numbered and it's their fault. they had 3 years on everyone and did nothing about it.
