Del.icio.us V4.0 will be awesome then.. strip out all the functionality, slap in the Facebook blue theme , drive half the users out, infest it with loads of bugs , kick out half of your staff , get a new CEO as traffic slumps & call it innovation!

endersgameDec 19, 2010
Yea Digg is literally dead. You can check the top stories for the last month and that list has less diggs AND less interesting stories then the old Digg used to have for the top news in 24 hours. And this is the first comment section I have seen in a while where more than 10 people are commenting. This is also the first comment section where the mods aren't censoring anti-digg/pro-reddit comments. Yes, probably 8 out of my last 10 comments have been quietly censored. To elaborate, I make a post that is critical really critical of digg, similar to most of the comments here. It usually gets dugg up quite a bit relative to other comments in the section. I check back the next day and the comment is completely hidden from the default view. It is not in the place it should be, and if I expand comments and everything it is nowhere to be seen. But if I check the most dugg view or any other view I can find it no problem. This has happened so consistently that it is outright censorship. Seriously Digg, f**k you.
On top of that I have noticed the past few weeks Digg will inflate the comment count for each article. Meaning it will say an article has lets say 84 comments, I will go and count each comment, making sure I expand all comments and count every single one, even the negative ones and the count will come out to usually less then half what Digg claims the comment count is. And this is all after Digg pretty much got caught red handed gaming the system themselves with a bunch of "test" accounts. I sent in a few bug reports and last time I checked this still goes on. So they don't have time to make the front page any better but they DO have time to plaster sponsored spam stories all over the place. The other day there were two sponsored articles on the front page, for the exact same advertisement. Niiiice.
tl;dr Digg is a sinking ship and in an effort to recruit new users, the people running the site will censor anti-digg comments, inflate diggs each story gets, and inflate the amount of comments each submission has. Apparently the Digg staff thinks its users are f**king stupid and wouldn't notice this crap, along with the fact that v4 was a gimmick to get your partners more traffic. You can say what you want about reddit, but at least they don't insult the intelligence of their users.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You make out like there aren't idiots on every social website, therefore you are an idiot.
endersgameDec 20, 2010
I have no idea what you are going on about. I agree with you, and would take it a step further. There are idiots in every community. You can't get away from idiots, you can only try to ignore them. Maybe I should have just ignored you?
C3LawrenceDec 20, 2010
You just seemed to be suggesting that reddit users were all much more intelligent and there were no black sheep as such.
p.s. you probably should
endersgameDec 23, 2010
All that I said was that the Digg staff treats its users like they are idiots. I never said the users were in fact idiots. If anything there are way more idiots at reddit, since it has more users overall. That doesn't concern me at all, what bothers me is how the site itself is run. Reddit treats its users with respect and Digg does not.
Anyways, I just thought it was odd that you misinterpreted my post and then called me an idiot because of it. Doesn't that make you the dumb one? Especially since my post was pretty clear. Maybe you just skimmed through it, I dunno.

Just curious, does anyone know what ever happened to Mr. Babyman? Didn't that dude used to put in like 12 hours a day searching out and posting new items? Of course all that effort instantly became an irrelevant historical footnote as soon as Digg 4 was introduced. Time to find a new hobby, eh?

What are you hoping improves, a specific feature, stability, etc?
Thanks for sticking it out.
couragewulfDec 18, 2010
Give us commenting badges. I've said this a few times now. If you want the community back, it starts with discussion.
How hard would it really be to trigger something that awards badges after their comments get so many upvotes or downvotes?
Also, remove RSS submissions and do this: As soon as a story is submitted by a user, have the publisher account from that domain digg the story. This will allow users who don't have a lot of followers to get on the front page.
These are two very simple things that would bounce digg back. How long before you listen?
cstaylorDec 19, 2010
Best two ideas I've heard so far. I am also one of the few who has decided to stick it out, because I have hope that digg will start to get better someday. I don't want digg v3 back, I want the community back, and for that to happen, features have to target the community and encourage discussion.
richidDec 19, 2010Staff
We've talked a bit about game mechanics and how best to integrate them into the site. Personally, I've always thought something like "Top Commenter", "Top Submitter", or similar badges would be valuable.
For RSS, your idea is very similar to a couple ideas we've thrown around here and I like it. I do believe the impact of RSS submits has gone down tremendously as most of the top publishers who use the feature get very little traction on their submissions.
It's harsh to imply that we haven't or are not listening; our dev team has been vocal and active in engaging with the community and we will continue to do so.
Thanks for the input!
amelflDec 19, 2010
wtf!? like you are listening now? didn't we post like thousands of comments on how to improve digg and bring people back...I also gave up, I might be here every two weeks, checkin in and just laughing at stories with 400 diggs....its pathetic...its like you guys are trying to kill this website for real...wow...
btw, at alexa, reddit is at 179 and digg at 130
3 months ago reddit was 276 and digg somewhere around 110
they jumped by almost 100, while digg dropped bout 20
aren't you guys getting it?! if you don't do dramatic changes very very soon..this site will be done and for sale for a few hundred thousand dollars...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
xraymasterDec 18, 2010
I think comment badges and badges in general would be a good idea. Maybe something like Stackoverflow, those badges just keep me answering the questions.
redhawk911Dec 19, 2010
I do think the site runs fine now. Not as many bugs as when it launched. And that's good. That being said, the main problem is that there aren't as much users here anymore. That's what I really loved with Digg pre v.4 There were always a lot of Digg's in the top stories, maybe 800+ diggs?, and often great and funny comments. And now it's more like a graveyard. Which is sad cause the Digg community was really good.
And one more thing. Digg v4 feels more like a Digg, Facebook and Twitter mashup somhow instead of just plain and simple Digg. But hey, maybe that's where all social sites are going for since that's what really works?
Oh and also, I miss the Digg green that was in the v3. Now it's pretty much just blue, blue and blue.
This is probably not what you (Richid) asked for, but it's just my feeling towards Digg for the moment. I'm gonna continue to use it but just not as much as before.
maxdDec 19, 2010
My comment history... please?
martoqDec 19, 2010
Go to your profile and click comments?
maxdDec 19, 2010
True enough, I suppose. Though, given that this so called 'comment history' starts at Jun-2010 (for me), it really is something of an abridged comment history. (You ever seen the movie Memento? I reckon the lead character in that movie would be fine with it). However, given that I still have an intact hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and perirhinal cortex (who knew there were so many parts of the brain responsible for encoding long term memories) - pretending that time immemorial began midway through this year just doesn't cut if with me.
I was actually kind of hoping that my 'comment history' could be a little more, you know - complete. Perhaps (and I know that this idea might be a little out there, a little avant garde) go back to when I opened my Digg account (I wonder how long ago that was? I know, I'll go check - oh wait! Bastards!)
tl;dr; God I'm bored.
martoqDec 19, 2010
I can't argue that. Not being able to see your very old comments or even your signup date sucks. More importantly not being able to see OTHERS start dates sucks more because you can't tell if it's a "fake" account or a real digg community contributor (which are feel and far in between these days.)
endersgameDec 19, 2010
Do you really want to know how to make Digg better? The most important thing you can do is bring Digg back to its roots. By that I mean you need to find some way to make the users feel like they have more control over the system. What made Digg so great back in the day was the fact that anybody could find something cool and original and post it and if it was cool and interesting enough the submission would make it to the front page. The first nail in Digg's coffin was when Kevin Rose allowed the power users to pretty much run the site.
I think the problem was Kevin Rose thought we were upset because we could submit a story and it had virtually no chance of making it to the front page but a power user like MrBabyMan could steal our submission and submit it an hour later and it would hit the front page. Maybe he was thinking that it wasn't that big of a deal because if the content is good it will make it to the front page somehow, and who really cares who gets the credit. Its not that big of a deal right? Wrong! It was a big deal because that meant I could find something really cool and really interesting and submit it and it wouldn't make it to the front page unless some power user stumbled upon it and submitted it. So now most of us average users that are really trying to make this site better by submitting good content have no way of doing so. On top of that, because of the control the power users had, they could submit anything and it would make it to the front page. And they did, they submitted dupe after dupe and literally any crappy picture from 4chan, along with some cool and interesting submissions too. But they had control over the front page, and they didn't care about making the site better. All they cared about was getting as many front page submissions as possible. Well this pissed many diggers off, and this is about the time the original digg users started migrating over to reddit. It only got worse once Kevin Rose implemented the friend system and shouts, etc. It only made it easier for power users to control the front page.
So in a nutshell, you need to give the power back to the users. You need to give them an incentive to submit stories and vote on stories. I even stopped digging and burying after a while because I felt like my vote didn't count. Once that happened, Digg kind of lost its appeal. But I still needed a place to find cool news and I wasn't really fond of reddit so I still came to Digg all the time. Then v4 came out, and I am sure even most digg staffers know deep down that v4 was complete and utter crap when it came out, and that drove a lot of the users that were just like me over to reddit. And once we got used to reddit, and installed a skin so it didn't make our eyes bleed, etc. we found that reddit is actually really cool. It has a great community with a plethora of interesting content and really great discussions and so on. A good chunk of those users are probably never coming back. I myself found a home at reddit, but if you guys can really change this place for the better I would be interested in visiting both sites. And I am sure I am not alone on this either.
But you guys have a long ways to go. I would say focus on the algorithm so everybody has an equal chance and the RSS submissions are kind of lame as well. Again, it takes away from the appeal of Digg. One last bit of advice, I would try to be as transparent and straight-forward as possible to your users. You want your users to completely trust the Digg staff and these last few weeks you guys have made that hard. You have done some things that seemed rather unscrupulous and quite frankly when the staff was called out on it, they gave vague explanations that didn't address the actual concerns and only made you guys seem more culpable. Like those "test" accounts that were caught gaming the system. Weren't there like a hundred of them? And they were digging so many stories on such a consistent basis along with the fact that they were deleted immediately after it was brought to the staff's attention, almost as if to cover it up. And then Kevin said something like "those were just test accounts" without answering any of the real questions we had. (some of them I just presented). Please guys, for your own sake even, don't do that s**t. Your users are going to be more supportive and more likely to do things like turn off ad-block for Digg if you can establish some kind of mutual respect between the staff and the users.
michelspcDec 19, 2010
Redhawk, when I viewed your comment and was not logged in a Digg staff member had a reply. I logged in wanting to reply to the staff member but the comment no longer appears. Oh well. Here is what I feel has changed with Digg.
For all practical purposes the site no longer provides user submitted content. Content creators get get their content automatically imported which completely undermines the average user submitting content.
Ads. I understand Digg needs to make money however I feel the ads are in a format that looks too much like a submitted link. Ads should not be in line with content.
Social. Social news is bull. Stick to what Digg was originally all about which was user submitted stories. If someone wants to share a news story with their friends they will use the path of least resistance which is where their friends are. Don't try to link into Facebook or Twitter. A feature is an added level of complexity. If someone wants to share a story they will find a way to share the information. Digg needs to be it's own service and needs it's own identity in order to survive.
Community without social. WIth the old Digg I always felt like I was part of something but didn't need to be "friends" with other users of the site. Digg has lost that factor for me and is now just a place where I stop for a few minutes a day and move on. Time to move on.
