Digg needs to go dark too...
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
Digg hasn't even taken a stance on SOPA/PIPA. Diggs sponsors are bigtime media companies.
Remember 09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0 and how digg censored the initial stories that included that code? They waited until it became common knowledge until that pathetic blog post. They won't do anything to oppose sponsors.
usarugulaJan 18, 2012
Digg took its stance by making this a hot story. I guess.
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
No. The users of digg made it a hot story.
usarugulaJan 18, 2012
It's my understanding that "hot stories" are staff picks. That said, the "hot stories" section of the front pace has been replaced today by a section called "SOPA & PIPA News On Digg", which is where I found this story. I assure you that "SOPA & PIPA News On Digg" was titled and positioned there by Digg staff.
Still, I am not calling it a major stance.
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
Well that;s my mistake. I haven't paid much attention to the many changes digg has made over the years.
mlw4428Jan 18, 2012
It was past the point of common knowledge. Digg caves to their corporate sponsors...look at how they put "stories" which are ads on the front page. Heck half of those "stories" don't even take you to the same story.
quickgold192Jan 18, 2012
I don't think anyone even administers Digg anymore... they just pay the annual hosting fee.
stump429Jan 18, 2012
Digg is way too corporate now.
Damn
Ammar_IftikharJan 18, 2012
If Google search goes offline for a day IT WILL SURELY MATTER MORE!!!
norman619Jan 18, 2012
But not as much as you think. They will be back to business as usual the following day.
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
But just about every government official and their children will notice for that one day. It will surely have a much larger impact than a tiny black logo.
norman619Jan 18, 2012
Not really. For example:
To protest our government's not paying its bills we the people should not pay OUR bills to the federal government. don't pay your income tax bill, federal student loans, and so on. THAT is something they will feel and notice.
A black logo on Google does nothing to interrupt their function. Might as well stage a hunger strike. Would be just as ineffectual.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Schweppesale2Jan 18, 2012
you crazy
letherialJan 18, 2012
Well it makes sense
These 'suddenly care about the deficit' people would rather the entire union collapse to prove a point.
Rien1786Jan 18, 2012
why stop at google? shut down facebook and twitter for a day and see how bat s**t crazy the US goes then.
Closed AccountJan 19, 2012
Yeah Facebook alone would get the supporters of the bill assassinated.
quickgold192Jan 18, 2012
Seriously though, if Google stopped working for a day I wonder how many scripts it would break and how much productivity would be lost. I really believe their would be a global economic impact, however small.
usarugulaJan 18, 2012
I used google a few times through my browser's search bar today and didn't even know about this banner until I read about it.
Wikipedia going dark, however, has already hit me four or five times today.
Which of the two above incidents do you think made SOPA more top of mind for me? This is a copout on google's part and will do little to nothing for awareness.
zebbersJan 18, 2012
https://en.wikipedia.org not down.
evildeadashJan 18, 2012
Why isn't Digg participating in all of this?
ieatskunkJan 18, 2012
They are. Following Google's lead Digg has changed the colors of some pixels out of protest. See if you can find them!
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
A tiny black logo for one day will accomplish nothing. A refusal of service for one day will get s**t done.
crashwithuhkJan 18, 2012
If by "get s**t done" you mean "make people go to any one of the many other search engines out there and just use that" then yes, it'll get s**t done.
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
You just quoted your own words in a juvenile attempt to present a ridiculous argument.
I'll respond when you are done quoting yourself and are ready to present a coherent argument. You tried to use quotes in a condescending manner but you quoted yourself. f**king hilarious.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
crashwithuhkJan 18, 2012
Look I'm sure you'd rather keep your head in the sand and naively assume that if Google took their engine down that hundreds of millions of Americans would shake off their apathy and call their local representatives, but the truth is if they went to google.com and saw it was down, most of them would just go to the next search engine that comes to their mind. They wouldn't just magically lose the need to search for things.
Bringing down Google will not "get s**t done", as you put it, any more than the logo will. Feel free to actually acknowledge that if you want. Or just keep focusing on the manner of which I pointed out your flawed logic. Either way works for me.
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
You quoted yourself. Take your head out of your own ass.
Now you are making s**t up. when did I ever say that hundreds of millions of Americans would shake off thier apathy. When you are done quoting yourself, please quote me on that argument. Tell me where I've used that number.
Stop playing make belie and come back to reality. Or just keep quoting yourself to feed your delusions. I DON'T LIKE TO EAT MANGO FRUIT BECAUSE SOMETIME I SLICE RIGHT INTO THE SEED. IT'S JUST TOO MUCH WORK SO I BUY THE JUICE.
crashwithuhkJan 18, 2012
Man if we had a dollar every time you fall back on "quoting yourself" so skirt the issue, we would have enough money to lobby against SOPA.
If you're representative of Digg's userbase then it's no wonder why this place has gone to s**t.
specimen7Jan 18, 2012
Y don't get a dollar because you've never acknowledged your own ridiculousness. Quoting yourself certainly qualifies as skirting the issue.
Keep pulling more douche from under your skirt. (bad joke, I'm sorry)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mistermysterJan 18, 2012
Being apathetic is never a healthy lifestyle for anyone. If other people go use another search engine in place of Google, so what. At least all those people saw the message.
zeedeoJan 18, 2012
SHUT DOWN GOOGLE!!! just for a couple hours of course
ieatskunkJan 19, 2012
Ya, it seems Wikipedia was the only one with balls to do it.
3fingersaluteJan 18, 2012
The image for this article is hosted on imgur which is blacked out today as well......funny.
jeremylew416Jan 18, 2012
A blacked out logo? Really Google? That's sorry as hell. And here I thought you were going to do something worthwhile. <_<
lemonrindJan 18, 2012
The Google logo looks fine to me, but I do not live in the United States. But even if I click on "Go to Google.com", which is supposed to load the American version, it still looks normal.
CrashingDownJan 18, 2012
oh mah goodnesses. Googly blacked out teh logoz. How f**king ineffective, of course, all these sites manufacturing outrage at SOPA and PIPA will be back on line shortly because they're just whores for advertising dollars.
How pathetic. You want to make a difference? Vote the sons of bitches supporting these pieces of garbage out of office. Blacking out your logo is almost an insult to most people's intelligence.
salbatrossJan 18, 2012
One of those things can be done NOW, the other can not. See the difference?
Though obviously a total shutdown is far more effective/annoying than a logo blackout.
CrashingDownJan 18, 2012
oh i see the difference, but apparently you missed my point. Blacking out your logo on your website does s**t. Blacking out your site but leaving a back door to get to the content does s**t and since this is the best these corporate whores can do to give the sheep the impression that they give a f**k, then the only alternative is to vote the f**kers that created and supported this bill out of office.
I say go dark until PIPA and SOPA are defeated. THAT would make a better statement than putting a black box over your logo. Big f'n deal
salbatrossJan 18, 2012
Valid, but I don't think being unwilling to suspend one's business until such time makes them "whores."
CrashingDownJan 18, 2012
sure it does. do you know how much money google would lose if they went dark? I don't know either but i can speculate it to be a s**t ton. That's why their faux "blackout" is laughable, almost embarrassing...
ieatskunkJan 18, 2012
Ha ha, a blanked out logo?? That's like giving a bum a nickel and saying you donated to the homeless.
kleon777Jan 18, 2012
Haha first
*on;y here because Reddit is down to protest internet pricacy.
uv0001Jan 18, 2012
I know right? Seeing the crap comments here brings back memories. It also reminds me why I switched to Reddit during the great Digg Exodus.
gregwhitworthJan 18, 2012Submitter
Not really - I just the love the design and functionality of Digg better than Reddit. Reddit was up when I posted this.
jeremylew416Jan 18, 2012
Average person: "Why the hell is Google's logo blacked out? Oh, it must be one of those things they do with their logo every now and then. Cool." -_-"
gregwhitworthJan 19, 2012Submitter
Yeah. That's why I blanketed my office with a heads up of what SOPA was and the sites involved.

LOL! I didn't even see that, that's what I get for posting this as quickly as possible! Thanks for the heads up!
ka5p3rJan 18, 2012
if the government "movie, music industry" wants sopa and pipa they will have it.you really think a small black out will help.

Look! digg has copy written material!!!! Shut it down!!!! Shut it down!!!!111!
copy written material below:
Bring that s**t in! Uggh!
Yeah, the movement's in motion with mass militant poetry
Now check this out...uggh!
In the right light, study becomes insight
But the system that dissed us
Teaches us to read and right
So called facts are fraud
They want us to allege and pledge
And bow down to their god
Lost the culture, the culture lost
Spun our minds and through time
Ignorance has taken over
Yo, we gotta take the power back!
Bam! Here's the plan
Motherf**k Uncle Sam
Step back, I know who I am
Raise up your ear, I'll drop the style and clear
It's the beats and the lyrics they fear
The rage is relentless
We need a movement with a quickness
You are the witness of change
And to counteract
We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back
Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back
The present curriculum
I put my fist in 'em
Eurocentric every last one of 'em
See right through the red, white and blue disguise
With lecture I puncture the structure of lies
Installed in our minds and attempting
To hold us back
We've got to take it back
Holes in our spirit causin' tears and fears
One-sided stories for years and years and years
I'm inferior? Who's inferior?
Yeah, we need to check the interior
Of the system that cares about only one culture
And that is why
We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back
Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back
Hey yo check, we're gonna have to break it, break it,
break it down
Awww s**t!
Uggh!
And like this...uggh!
Come on, yeah! Bring it back the other way!
The teacher stands in front of the class
But the lesson plan he can't recall
The student's eyes don't perceive the lies
Bouning off every f**king wall
His composure is well kept
I guess he fears playing the fool
The complacent students sit and listen to some of that
Bulls**t that he learned in school
Europe ain't my rope to swing on
Can't learn a thing from it
Yet we hang from it
Gotta get it, gotta get it together then
Like the motherf**kin' weathermen
To expose and close the doors on those who try
To strangle and mangle the truth
'Cause the circle of hatred continues unless we react
We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back
Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back
No more lies
No more lies
No more lies
No more lies
No more lies
No more lies
No more lies
No more lies
Uggh!
Yeah!
Take it back y'all
Take it back, a-take it back
A-take it back y'all, come on!
Take it back y'all
Take it back, a-take it back
A-take it back y'all, come on!
Uggh!
Yeah!
Rage against the machine

Not surprisingly if you live outside of the US you will get redirected back to your own google. I get redirected back to .co.uk when I try and access .com I was accessing .com the other day when I was testing new google+ search recommendations options.
The .co.uk site is not blacked out.
Google want to keep their global image intact yet appear to still support anti-SOPA protests in the US.
Poor show Google, poor show

as is typical of our increasingly liberal government, the idea is not bad but the way it's carried out is awful! i don't trust any of our leaders with this proposed power, not with SOPA, PIPA, or the NDAA. all it takes is one Julius Caesar and we're to the point of no return...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

If legislation would make it illegal for me to profit off of pirated streams and download sites, I would spend millions on AstroTurf, too.
