Huh? Maybe, but at least I rarely have to drive to the library anymore to find something out, or is that being lazy?
bukowskyOct 9, 2010
What's a library?
russkie69Oct 9, 2010
There you have it. And your local library has the ability to collaborate with Google, Inc. by tying in their catalog. Then when you do a Google search, you will see if your local library has a paper or e-print of the material you want. The Internet is making librarians obsolete. At one large, prestigious university, the new Provost demanded that all the libraries on campus justify themselves as physical entities. Libraries on campus are good for studying, but less so for finding answers. Librarians coming out of grad school don't even know how to search their own catalog, or pertinent databases.

The eletronic age presents another problem : someone could potentially change all in the info in an e Book or alter all book in a library, who says they can't!

Stupid? If anything, I'd say it's making us smarter, because now we have an easier way to access the information in which we are seeking.

I like the cut of your jib, bukowsky!

It's disturbing to me because I'm on the Internet professionally but I believe it it true.

The people of the world now have all of the information out there at their finger tips.
How could it possibly be making us dumber when knowledge is power?

If the information is convenient, why not use it!
greg2kOct 10, 2010
No, it's making us impatient.
crystl37Oct 10, 2010
how can having all the knowledge on the planet organized, indexed, searchable and individually customized make us stupid?
atsui2Oct 10, 2010
They say the more you know, the more you know that you don't know, so yeah, Google makes me feel stupid, at least...
Seriously though, my favorite comment in the video is at 52:04 when Norvig talks about how nowadays you can really quickly go from not knowing anything about a subject to learning enough to do something useful about it. I guess the trick is to get in the zone so the distractions don't get in the way.
