Microsoft and Apple have been around almost since the inception of the Microprocessor. It came out in 1971. If I'm not mistaken, Microsoft was founded in 1975 and Apple in 1976
The vast majority of small-computer companies self destructed within a couple of years to a decade after they entered the fray.
Apple & Microsoft rode the field through a lot of changes like a couple of natural born bronco busters at a rodeo.
Intel has shown a lot of staying power too. It still has AMD to spar with. But Mostek, Zilog, and others have completely disappeared from the microprocessor scene.
