pcmag.com— Apple may have hitched its star to HTML5 with iOS-based devices like the iPhone and iPad, but Flash is still more secure, more available, and used for more multimedia overall.

html 5 as everyone likes to call it is really defining a lot of different technologies. Its not html specific coding. Its things like canvas, ajax, more robust dom manipulation in the browser etc. All of these things are improving and making apps through a browser far more robust. With that said, a lot of this (canvas as an example) is in its infancy and still cant compete with some of the things you can do with flash. I am not advocating flash and I like where html5 is going. But currently, there are some things that you can do in flash that would just choke your browser.
This infographic is ignorant. I'm a web developer so I know a thing or two about this.
No kidding there are more flash games than HTML5 games. It's been around much longer. This says nothing. Plus this figure of a few hundred was pulled out of their ass. There are almost 100+ games on playmycode.com alone. There are dozens of game frameworks and probably thousands of HTML5 games.
The compatibility thing is also stupid. It's compares the install base of HTML5 to the potential install base of flash. Flash isn't installed on 99% of computers. HTML5 could be installed on 99% of computers too.
HTML5 games use smaller files than SWFs. Claiming that one file is superior is really stupid.
It also awards flash as the winner in technology. It has to be separately installed. How is that easier than HTML5 which is built in? Audio support is not limited in HTML5 by any means.
Overall, this whole infographic is idiotic and was made by a flash fanboy. There's a reason flash is going away and HTML5 is dominating. It's f**king better.
I'm a web developer and although I like the direction of html 5 and things like canvas, I cannot lie and get into the hype. There are some things that flash is currently better at doing. Specifically in handling complex animations and 3D. Canvas isn't even close.
As far as html 5 and streaming video goes there is no standardized codec. Until that happens, flash makes for a pretty easy standard way to deliver streamed video. I hope a codec is standardized but there are legal issues and all. I sure as hell dont want to go backwards to 1998 where you had to dig for different codecs to stream video. That would utterly suck.
There's always a transition from one technology to another. Thats what's going on right now. Even Adobe knows that Flash's days are numbered and are already over in the mobile space which is the fastest growing segment. This is why they're coming out with Flash to HTML tools and so on.
You can hang on to the familiar or get ready for the change.
Yup, that's why parallel ports dissapeared a few years before serial ports came into play, and serial ports dissapeared a few years before USB ports came into play..
its all about developer knowledge.
Many many more developers know how to make games in Flash, but that Is not to say they are not trying the same in HTML5.
It will take time to learn how to do the same or similar techniques of flash development in HTML5. And if Flash is still so widely available, what's the rush for then to try?
Apple wants you to BUY apps(games) that can already be played in Flash for free, Why do you think they pushed it to the side and basically punched Adobe in the face?
CORRECTION: Developers who make games want to get paid for making them so they can continue to make them instead of working at McDonalds (or they can make Flash games and put ads in your face all the time to pay for them, your pick)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
It's like Apple did it's own version of sopa, restrict people from creative freedom by means of restricting an application, and you'll be able to profit a little more. It's insane really.
Are you even kidding me? It isn't about having to pay a dollar for the consumer, it's about all of the content already in flash that they're missing out on thanks to Apple.
Apple doesn't care about other people's content if you haven't figured that out. It isn't in their business model. They set up their walled garden to protect their business, BUT at the same time, provide superior experiences in mobile games compared to flash through native written apps. Might be hard to swallow the truth that the walled garden produces better results, but its the truth.
"superior experiences in mobile games" Androids and other tablets support Flash & have almost the same apps, there isn't too much of a difference in performances that really calls for Apple to have a say in things like this.
No they didn't do it better. They simply put it out on the Iphone to millions of casual users who had no idea games like Angry Birds existed on the web back in 1998.
And there won't be HTML5 ads? Ever consider that Flash ads are easy to block? HTML5 ads are essentially no different than "normal content" so you won't be able to block them as easily.
True. But you can cleverly and easily make Flash a real pain in the butt to decompile, using multiples of swfs loading inside swfs, misleading structure, and URL dependent code. I used this for Flash cartoons (Flash used to pay bills back in the Flash 4 and 5 days, but I have to admit animation is probably all it's good for now!).
Flash is HORRID and needs to go away. Sure, it's handy for throwing together self contained applications / web games / etc, but man is it ever inefficient. It was nice once upon a time when it let people do things you couldn't normally do on the web, but now it's just the weak link. I seriously hate when people embed flash objects (video players or other) in their blogs and watching even the strongest of computers sometimes choke on them for several seconds at a time. LOL, of course Flash is better, it's been on the market for years while HTML5 is still taking its first baby steps. You don't need to be a genius to realize that.

almost all mobiles games are ripoffs of Flash... Angry birds for example, castle crushers was the first to do it

Flash should have died years ago. Now it's infested so many sites it'll takes years to get rid of this proprietary crap.
Things would probably run smoother if standards fir HTML5 could be agreed on.
