It's not all about phone calls and 3g signal you know. It's much thinner that the 3GS and it's got a revolutionary front facing camera. Who needs signal anyway?
elranzerJun 24, 2010
I mean, really.... how important is it for a phone to make phone calls?
tgc1Jun 25, 2010
I know, the nerve of these f**king people.
darkstar3333Jun 25, 2010
iPhone, for people who want a phone but don't want to talk to people.
jrhodes88Jun 24, 2010
Making phone calls is at the bottom of the list for iPhone 4 features
rpgmakrJun 25, 2010
Well, uhm, duh?
scottrtlJun 25, 2010
And it has the retina display with free yellow! Its a feature really...
Closed AccountJun 24, 2010
Revolutionary front camera? In 10 years of video calling available in Europe and Japan over 3G, I have not made one single video call. The only time someone I knew bothered to make a video call is to show someone else how video calling works. FaceTime is crapware nobody needs except deaf and mute who use it with sign language. It's also iPhone to iPhone.
blapierreJun 25, 2010
Obviously you are fluent in sarcasm.

Closed AccountJun 28, 2010
slipdisc2 Not in this country, except for those that use TTY, but in Japan, hell yeah due to video phones. You can stream HD video, pay at vending machines by using it as a credit card. It's very advanced over there.
utnowJun 28, 2010
I really wish I could get a full listing of every time I've seen the "FRONT FACING VIDEO CAMERA FOR VIDEO CHAT! WHY ISN'T THIS A FEATURE ALREADY????" comment on Digg or Reddit.... I mean... I agree with you.... but I'm feeling the vibe of people who can't be happy no matter what you do.
With that said... I've already made ample use of the front-facing camera for group photos with friends and such. It's pretty handy.
kdx200riderJun 25, 2010
Owning the latest Apple product has nothing to do with functionality or reliability. It is all about looking cool and trendy.
elranzerJun 25, 2010
iPhones are meant to be seen and not heard.
rpgmakrJun 25, 2010
FTA: "While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can't help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design."
Wow, really? No f**king s**t. Thanks to people like the guys at engadget Apple can still get away with this dismissive jerk behavior.
propheticevilJun 25, 2010
Didn't the Nexus One had 3G issues when holding the bottom of it as well? Must be a tribute.
nretampJun 25, 2010
My 3G drops calls everyday without the metal edges... Might as well upgrade to drop calls with a pretty screen.

jaschenJun 25, 2010
Can't blame AT&T for this one
klxz79Jun 24, 2010
If this is happening on all or a majority of iPhone 4s then I'd say this defect is worse than the Xbox 360 RRoD. This is a new low in stupid design and quality control...
elranzerJun 24, 2010
Apple is the new Microsoft. They've caught up to Xbox 360-era Microsoft... right after passing anti-trust era Microsoft.
yugiohdan6Jul 2, 2010
what are you talking about?
http://blogs.computerworld.com/16039/apple_faces_an_anti_trust_suit_is_there_an_app_for_that?
The New York Post reports that the feds are about to launch an investigation into whether Appple is violating anti-trust laws over banning non-Apple tools for developing for the iPhone.

@Khast
Thanks for a level-headed response.
I agree they are comparable in being engineering design failures/flaws, however, I disagree with the original poster's reaction as if these were comparable in severity. With one flaw, we have a unit that is dead and requires maintenance and down time. With the other, we have a reduced signal that may not even affect the ongoing call.
Here's a more rational look at the problem than most Digg users would care to read:

Apple has been in this situation for a while now. The only difference is that Apple's userbase has expanded beyond the fanatics that choose to ignore the problems.
rockytop9808Jun 25, 2010
What most people view as problems in Apple's products, their userbase views as "revolutionary features".
senturionJun 25, 2010
It's never too early to jump to conclusions and blow things out of proportion based on little evidence is it?
Device out for 5 years vs. device out for 1 day, what a shocking parallel!
hongkongjapieJun 25, 2010
*laugh*
So hardware failure == an occasional dropped call for some. First, the question is, how real is the issue. Reporting a problem with Apple's ace product gives lots of visitors, lots of ad money and engadget hasn't really got much journalistic ethics. Secondly, if this is a problem for some, there are easy solutions like the rubber thing you can put around it and probably some laque/nail polish would do the trick if you don't want the rubber. Or just don't buy an iphone.
drcrankJun 25, 2010
Maybe they should have gotten HTC to make the iPhone 4. They make good products...
tenoqJun 25, 2010
The battery life on the iPhone is short enough as it is, thanks. Don't let HTC give us one that only lasts 4 hours (Diamond, anyone?)
burningtoastersJun 25, 2010
Well I've had my Eris for over 7 months now, no problems at all. Just a hairline crack at the top of the screen from dropping it on a concrete block. One user's experience =/= the quality overall. And last I checked, we haven't seen any "EVO devices bezel antenna actually dropping calls!" headlines on Digg. Not that every device doesn't have it's problems, of course.
But the battery life thing is legitimate, I don't know why Tenoq is getting dugg down. My eris can barely survive the day with 3G on. I've heard similar stories about the EVO.
stillhateyouJun 25, 2010
The only difference is all of 360 fanboys defended Microsoft for their misstep.
jugglingjonJun 25, 2010
I can send my Xbox 360 with defects back for repairs, free of charge. Apple on the other hand, is telling users experiencing this to 'just stop holding it that way'. There's a big difference in philosophy there, one worth supporting and one not.
jamaphJun 25, 2010
Wow, guy above me... Way to confirm EXACTLY what this guy was posting about.
darkstar3333Jun 25, 2010
Um not hes not, its a reasonable way to handle the complaints. Microsoft stepped up to the plate, and paid for everything to lesson the burden on the customer.
Free priority shipping, repair and delivery for 3 years for all consoles. Sony did the same but to a lesser extend for there YLOD issue.
If they handled it the Apple way they would have just said, "f**k you buy a new console".
killypJun 25, 2010
My 3GS has just started showing exactly the same symptom since I upgraded to iOS4, so I'd guess it's a software issue, not a hardware issue, unlike the XBox 360 overheating issues...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
adriaaanJun 25, 2010
It's not. The issue is that holding the phone in a certain way bridges the wifi and GSM antennas, creating a lot of interference for both interfaces. It is a hardware issue, Apple should give every purchaser of an iPhone 4 a complimentary bumper case for their f**kup.
yugiohdan6Jul 2, 2010
I think that Apple should replace the defective iPhone 4's with the next revision that doesn't exhibit this problem.
mabakerbrakerJun 25, 2010
Google is the new Skynet. Ever heard of the fanboiis phones losing their apps magically? Yepp, it’s Google at its finest.
moduspwnensJun 25, 2010
Wait, so you can fix the RRoD by holding the XBox differently? Or getting a case (like everyone does anyway)?! This is great news!
Yes, it's bad, but let's try and keep it in perspective.
and101Jun 25, 2010
You can sometimes fix the RRoD by putting the xbox motherboard in an oven for a short time to reseat the bga chips.
Probably won't work for the iPhone but if anyone wants to try it and post the results on YouTube.
mabakerbrakerJun 24, 2010
"P.P.S. Since some of you are asking, our review unit showed none of these issues.”
Love how ppl blow it always out of proportion.
zunipusJun 25, 2010
Why anyone is digging down mabakerbraker's comment is beyond me comprehension.
The fact that the problem is NOT in the review phones is EXCELLENT news. This means that the problem may be (A) Only in a certain run of the product |OR| (B) May be easily repairable |OR| (C) May only require a software patch.
So YES: This is NOT a universal problem and YES: The problem is already being blown out of proportion. Enjoy the trolling while you can! Then get bent.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
nishanthkJun 25, 2010
If you read the article and knew what you were talking about. It is (A) a problem with antennae design same for all phones, (B) Not repairable, otherwise Steve would've said so, and (C) can't be fixed with a patch because its a hardware problem.
The reason testing and review probably didnt show it is because they probably held it with their fingertips on the outside to show it to a video camera, in which case they didnt cover up the lower left corner.
So YES: This IS a universal problem and YES it is being blown out of proportion, yet its still a big problem.
and101Jun 24, 2010
Perhaps Apple should spend more time with their engineers and less with their magicians.
kkm3Jun 25, 2010
You don't need "Engineering" to solve this. Just put a plastic coat on the damn metal antennae part.
swellinJun 25, 2010
Why the f**k should I have to pay $30 for a case so my phone can make calls? That is complete and utter bull s**t, these phones are defective, they should be recalled, or the $30 case should come with every single one of them and be free of charge.
utnowJun 28, 2010
I'm a self-proclaimed apple fanboy and tech-slut and I really have to agree with this. It's not a simple matter of "holding it the wrong way." I accidentally cover that corner several times a day during normal use. Bare minimum the bumper should be free. But ideally there should be some sort of recall. Plain and simple, this is a big error that needs an Apple solution.
kkm3Jun 25, 2010
I meant for apple on their future phones.

I just played with 2 of my coworkers Phones. I work in Times Square. I cupped the entire metal edge on both and guess what... nothing happened. I bet its a manufacturing defect. If it is apple should replace the affected phones ASAP!
zephikJun 24, 2010
I think there testing team, as short lived as it is, would probably notice this giant glaring f**k-up. So let's hope it's not a widespread problem.
Not that I care. I can't even afford the damn thing. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
barrettandersonJun 25, 2010
It isn't a manufacturing defect. It's a design defect. There are some variables that can affect whether or not it happens (mostly if you are doing it right and how dry your hands are). Chances are you either weren't doing it correctly, long enough, or your hands don't conduct very well.
petebob796Jun 25, 2010

mediamonkJun 25, 2010

It's still technically an upgrade. It's just that... the phone has become basically useless because you can't hold the damn thing. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

WHEN I DO A STRAIGHT, OBJECTIVE COMPARISON between a Nokia smartphone and an iPhone 4, the following obvious things come to mind:
iPhones cost more, but have less features, more poorly implemented, poor signal strength, can't multitask, poor battery life, poor build quality (scratches on new iPhone 4's already), STILL can't multitask (if ioS multitasks then I'm a monkey's uncle)
iPhones have more apps and a slightly easier to use (but far more limited) UI. That's it. NOT worth spending my money on.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Also the PR people should take it down a notch on the exaggerated claims & denying fallibility.
Apple saying don't hold your phone in you're left hand to left handed people has audacity
Saying don't worry about the yellow blotches on your screen
Claiming the screen is near indestructible helicopter glass but can crack after a foot drop
I love my iphone 3g & the iphone 4 is a major advancement in a plethora of different ways. & for a company that's been touted #1 in customer service this is an embarrassment to be a customer of apple through their denial, their politics, & it feels like they left a lot of their customers high & dry.
Also the distribution was a nightmare I preordered my phone on day one. The AT&T i ordered from never got any till 3:00 PM & none of the 32 GB Black i ordered.
This is purposeful as Apple stores had a ton & some customers received theirs via mail days prior. & next apple PR event apple will brag about the high demand that they (purposefully) could not meet & they couldn't see this coming
zmail21Jun 25, 2010
Apple dropped the ball big time. They are getting a little too comfortable with their position in the market. Steve jobs answered a email and told the loyal apple customer to "not hold it that way" unacceptable steve!

serif69Jun 25, 2010
This isn't isolated to the iPhone 4 at all. In fact, it's happened to just about every phone I've ever owned. If you touch the antenna, the service deteriorates. It happened with my Omnipoint cheapo phone, Verizon flip phones, LG Chocolate (DON'T JUDGE), original iPhone, and currently my iPhone 3GS. It was especially bad with the original iPhone as I tend to place my pointer finger on the back of the phone, and that's right where the antenna was on that.
Talking specifically about the 3GS (since I have it on my person), it simply isn't comfortable holding it to my left ear in my left hand while touching the lower left, where this problem is on the iPhone 4. Occasionally, though, if I'm on hold or something, I'll adjust my grip and the service will degrade. I honestly think this is getting blown out of proportion because someone prone to bitch about things noticed a flaw. As I said, it's happened to me with pretty much every phone I've owned. I guarantee this happens to some people even on the cool-as-s**t HTC EVO. It also happens with my radio, happened with my old TV, and will happen with every metal antenna known to mankind.

"Apple has suggested that users need to change the position of which you hold the phone, or buy a case which covers this part of the area – great.
Steve Jobs himself replied back to a user’s email about the problems, by saying that he should ‘avoid holding the phone in that way’. Here is Apple’s official fix to the problem:
”If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

"keep their place in the smartphone market"
A little comment just to put things in perspective : HTC Evo sold 60000 units within a week, witch is quite a large number for a smart phone.
The iPhone got 600,000 preorders the first day! And ATT got 13m upgrade inquiry that same day. And only in the US. Don't forget that they have 75% of the market in Japan.
So don't worry about Apple keeping their place in the smartphone market. They are doing just fine.
