Are there REALLY people out there who would be willing to pay almost 1000 euros for a phone? :s
....... .................. 0_0 ........................................
shroomtimeAug 8, 2010
For an iPhone I would sell my soul for.
sinembarg0Aug 9, 2010
780 is almost 1000?
That's like saying a 9.36 inch dong is almost 12 inches. That's ri-c**k-ulous.
brownsoundAug 9, 2010
dugg for accuracy.

Still 780 Euros is a load of money....
enantiodromiaAug 9, 2010
in Italy? of course. overpriced and shiny is their national pass time.
johnomazzAug 9, 2010
Dude, I'm Italian, and I agree with your statement.

So, overseas Diggers, answer me a question. You pay full price for a phone but it's unlocked so you can use it with almost any carrier, right? How long do people keep their phones before upgrading? I find two years with one carrier is enough time here in the states so the contract doesn't bother me.
I mean, are there people who buy a new smart phone and switch to multiple carriers within a short time? Do you guys really think it's worth it? Would you rather lock yourself in with a carrier for two years to get half off a phone?
areallygoodnameAug 9, 2010
In most cases you get a different phone when you buy separately from the carrier.
I have an N900 that's bought separately from a carrier. It supports being a WAP, has in built Skype/SIP over wifi support, it has full root access, it does tethering etc. All out of the box. The instructions to gain root and install whatever the hell you want are even provided with the phone.
This also happens with the Android phones. With carriers they are often locked down and take a warranty voiding reflash to jailbreak. Buy them separately and they are totally open.
When you get a phone with a contract it's not really your phone (look at the contract, it says just that). The phone will be locked to the network and it will only support features that help to make the phone company more money. You often won't get VOIP, tethering and the ability to act as a WAP.
keicloneAug 9, 2010
Have an unlocked Samsung phone in the States, but assuming even if I wanted an iPhone I would rather not have to deal with AT&T's s**t service, and requiring me to pay a heavy premium for it as well.
Is it worth the extra couple hundred dollars? It depends on the person and situation. For me it is. The twisted part of it all is that most phones you upgrade to on AT&T REQUIRE you to get their data plan. Now I know many if not most casual users would not make use of that data plan besides maybe that one time a month. Yet the policy these days all but requires it whether you use it or not. And consumers continue to eat it all up. These same consumers that would benefit the most from an unlocked phone are also the least likely to consider one.
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
I guess I can see the worth in it if the monthly plan is cheaper so your cost is less overall. Also, if you need those features such as VOIP and tethering. I was assuming the monthly charges were comparable.
jaspahAug 9, 2010
Why buy a smartphone and not get the data plan?
It's like buying a car without gas...
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
Well to answer your question let me give you an example from India. Prepaid or pay as you go is big in India. All the incoming calls are free and you pay per minute for out going calls and mostly all plans include unlimited data for a fixed premium (which is also per month so you can use it one month and cancel if you dont want the next month). Now the main point, there are mostly about 5 GSM and alteast 1CMDA operators in most areas in India who compete for the market share and come out with offers every month. People choose the best offer and switch the career when a better one is found. This works out very cheap compared to US where you are locked into a contract where you pay for a fixed amount of minutes whether you use them or not and also cannot get out of contract without paying ETF. Plus if you look at the cost of phone that an operator charges over a period of time in contracts, is way more than its retail price. Even if you upgrade your phone in two years, you would still save money by staying away from contract. Also this system kind of make sure that people dont buy things that they cannot afford. You can only buy phones and minutes you can afford because you are paying for them in advance. You can always add minutes if you like but this way atleast you are not paying for something that will not use.

@ sinembarg0 - I'll make it more relevant to diggers for you:

I like how I can depend on each infographic to be s**ttier than the last.

What a coincidence. I'm actually making an infographic about that now. I just need to find the right crayons and then I'm going to scan it in.....
fuzi0ndetAug 9, 2010
Too true, apparently the s**tfographic business wasn't hit hard by the recession. In fact it appears as if they've experienced tremendous double digit growth over the past few years.
pagitAug 9, 2010
it says canada 557 euros ($760.10 cdn) & 657 euro ($896.57 cdn) - Rogers is advertising online for $649.00 cdn No Term & $749.00 cdn No Term
graemeeAug 9, 2010
Keep in mind that Roger's phone is still locked to Rogers. Only the Apple.ca store sells unlocked iphones.
pagitAug 9, 2010

trollbaneAug 9, 2010
I don't think this graph is fairly adjusted for the relative differences in exchange rates. So whilst a 16Gig iPhone might be the equivalent to 500 euros in Hong Kong and over 650 euros in Italy, I'm sure 650 euros in Italy would buy you about what 500 would in HK, if that makes sense (I'm aware I'm not doing a great job of explaining what I mean).
azwethinkweizmAug 9, 2010
But then again, gasoline over there costs around $12 a gallon so I guess everything is inflated in Europe.
w3berAug 9, 2010
what's a gallon?
azwethinkweizmAug 9, 2010
Oh, f**k you. I converted liters to gallons because most Digg users are American.
mihai12345Aug 9, 2010
@azwethinkweizm: Actually according to Alexa 63.3% of diggers are from outside the US.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/digg.com#audience

Owned?..?
texaAug 9, 2010
If 63.3% of diggers are outside of the USA, that would mean 37.7% are from the USA. I bet most diggers are American is a true statement. What country has a greater than 37% share?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
captininsanityAug 9, 2010
Among other reasons, gas is taxed more there. Their currency has less inflation. The higher gas prices actually promote conservation more, and allow for a more stable economy (remember how the US economy freaked out in 2006 when gas hit almost $4 a gallon?).

alot of their other phones are actually cheaper too. a top of the line phone is around $400 us
strfxAug 9, 2010
Ah, Hong Kong. I was there in 2008 and remember buying a prepaid phone card at a convenience store. A guy looked at me and asked: "Why do you buy that crap? Just get a pre-paid sim card for you phone". I told him I was from the US and had a US cell phone what wouldn't let me just plug in a sim card.
There was a moment of silence.
Then he shook his head, said "Oh, from the US. Sorry to hear it. Yeah, get that phone card then". It was obvious he meant to say "Sorry you're from such a backward place..."
OrangecommanderAug 9, 2010
I know right? America is just so backward. It's a good thing we have the rest of the world, or we might just fall apart.
/s
I'm sorry, but reading this comment just made me vomit a little in my mouth. I really can't say it better than South Park: “America may have some problems, but it’s our home, our team, and if you don’t want to root for your team then you should get the hell out of the stadium.”Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
strfxAug 9, 2010
@OrangeCommander: I don't think you quite get it...
This discussion is about cell phone. Not about countries as a whole. No need to get all defensive.
And maybe you think of yourself as a fan cheering from the stands, but I think of myself as part of the team. And in order to get better, we need to realize where we fall short and work on improving it. And it is the losses that show us where you fall short, not the wins. Just chanting "U-S-A!!" will not make us a better team.
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
@Orangecommander... But our carriers are backward and lag behind many other country's big carriers. The same can also be said for our telcos and cable providers that provide high-speed internet. It's not a knock on America, but a knock on America's large corporations.
tntbassAug 9, 2010
@strfx
Very well said.

yes im going to hk soon, gonna get 5 unlocked ones!
dougs55Aug 9, 2010
2 per customer at the apple store :)

zenfuAug 9, 2010
Ah MAN i love whoever created this infographic. I've been in the UK on Apple Store iPhone reserve lists for the past month now. Every time i walk past Regent St or White City, there's a massive queue outside the store for people buying them. It's frustrating.
Jumped on digg, saw the infographic, remembered that a friend of mine's currently in HK so i gave him a call.
I'ma have my new iPhone on saturday when he returns, and i'm saving about 120GBP on the price.
Talk about good timing there, alphadiggs. :D
angelbunnyAug 9, 2010
@ZenFu
I'm thinking along the same lines. Buy where it is cheap and sell where it costs a lot... hmm could make a nice chunk of change on ebay even. ;)
glockenspiel69Aug 9, 2010
I was just in HK two days ago... a failed iphone4 shopping experience.
"Unlocked" iPhone4's are NOWHERE to be found in any major authorized resellers. I visited every major Broadway and Fortress outlet. I called every single reseller in HK. NOTHING. At this point they can only be purchased via the Apple HK website (NOTE: 2 week waiting period, for HK residents ONLY!!!) Contracted phones were everywhere, but again, nothing unlocked.
Now, there were PLENTY of Grey market iphone4s being sold... 32 GB iphone4s for over HKD$ 8000 (thats over 1000 USD!)
I say give it at least another few months before you see any unlocked iphone4's in any authorized resellers.
BTW, I also noticed an HTC Evo brand new, unlocked being sold for HKD$ 3,800.
jwong8Aug 9, 2010
lol not even places in new territories?
glockenspiel69Aug 9, 2010
Completely sold out. iPads too!! Crazy!
glockenspiel69Aug 9, 2010
I am almost certain these is an organized operation to buy all of these and resell them in the mainland!
glockenspiel69Aug 9, 2010
If Apple is smart they will get the iPhone 4 selling in legit stores ASAP... talk about a huge untapped Market!!!
shaneylucyAug 9, 2010
People in Southeast Asia will be very lucky to grab the cheapest iPhone 4 sold in HK. But seriously, even if it's cheapest in HK, a 16GB iPhone 4 can already buy you a decent PC.
tsk05Aug 9, 2010
Why is the domain of the US .com? I am pretty sure it's .us..
zenfuAug 9, 2010
Have you tried apple.us recently?
How's that workin' out for you?
angelbunnyAug 9, 2010
.com has been around a lot longer than .us so yes .com is officially a TLD for the USA. Also, .edu, .net, .org, .gov, ... and many more. When your country invents the internet it kinda gets a stake in domain names.
smackythefrog00Aug 9, 2010
How many of you quizzed yourselves on the flags at the bottom?

so why didnt you get that?
ethanboosAug 9, 2010
This is a load of crap on the Singapore thing. I was there a couple months ago and the 3gs cost over 800 euros unlocked for the big one. Even a 2nd-hand 2g model cost about 450 euros.
slimspacemanAug 9, 2010
different price, same s**t...
bumfaceAug 9, 2010
I saw queues outside various phone outlets in a shopping mall while browsing on my morning break during an early shift. I was a bit surprised that people would bother to do that to get hold of a gadget. I was interested in checking the new iphone out, but not that interested.
I went back in the afternoon when I'd finished my shift. First shop I went into had sold out. Another had a sign up saying iphone 4 available here, but no queue outside, so I went in to tell the salesman that they ought to take the sign down. He told me that, actually, they had one left in stock. 32GB, tied to Orange, take it or leave it.
I left the store to have a think about it. Called a mate for a second opinion. He was unavailable. I decided to go for it anyway, and went back in store and bought the phone.
I paid £319 up front, and signed up for an 18 month contract at £35 per month. This gave me more call time (etc) than the £25 per month (over 24 months) option. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I think tethering is included if I want it, but I don't carry my notebook around with me much. I like having internet on my phone! (Previously used a basic, old Nokia mobile, no internet.) There are some fun apps to be had. I've got a 2500 elo chess programme on there (Shredder), cost less than a fiver. I'm not bothered about accessing root menus. Is there stronger chess software available for another smart phone? I doubt it.
I've also been doing photo-shop type things on the touch screen. Got some fun video effects apps too. Bunch of games, music and videos. It's great!
BTW I've not had any dropped calls.
I think you will enjoy your new phone. :)

Dugg for Hong Kong. I got my iPhone 4 for free by simply staying with my service provider. My previous 3G iPhone contract had just expired and they were worried that I'd switch to another provider so they offered me the iPhone 4 for free if I renewed my contract with them. The beauty of a competitive market.
mabakerbrakerAug 9, 2010
It may be a shock for the Americans. News flash: You’re paying 3x as much as the Europeans for ANY kind of phone you purchase with a contract.
pvaibhavAug 9, 2010
Just wait until it's available in India (sometime in 2012 but hopefully before the world ends). Then you can finally buy a 16GB iPhone4 for over $800 USD and still locked to carrier with no 3G.
OrangecommanderAug 9, 2010

corezzAug 9, 2010
At least Canada is in a respectable spot...3rd lowest in the world :)
tntbassAug 9, 2010
I had no idea it was so cheap in Canada.
Our carriers still suck though, no matter which phone you use.
dutchsaintAug 9, 2010
It sucks they didn't accurately list Holland. I went shopping for a new phone today, and I saw it in... Belcompany I think. It was €949.
Now I regret not bothering to go to the apple store to check the price there, might have been different, but I doubt it.
