Holy f**k! I saw the pic in the article and immediately tried to pull my iMac down to my lap (didn't work). Holy s**t! I always thought touch screen on desktops was a gimmick, but if they can get it to work like the patent describes, I'll be the first one in line. Let me read it again:
" For example, an accelerometer in the display could sense the force of gravity along an axis, and the measured force could be used to determine an angle of the display with respect to the ground (i.e. the plane perpendicular to the direction of the force of gravity). A transition between input modes could be performed when the vertical angle (tilt) of the display crosses a predetermined angle."
"In another example, a rotation sensor could be mounted in an adjustable stand of the display. The rotation sensor could measure a rotation position of the stand, such as an angle between the base of the stand and a hinged arm that connects the base and the display. The measured rotation position could be used to determine the orientation of the display."
Holy f**k! The future is here!

The future is here? Have you been living under a rock for the past decade? This is nothing new.
jshhmrAug 24, 2010
He a Jobs drone. He always think old technology is new when Apple does it.

I'm not surprised that they are experimenting with ways to make a desktop computer more mobile...but I'd rather see a detachable 22in multi-touch display that receives video input wirelessly from my computer.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Wireless video would have and cause too much interference to be really effective at monitor resolutions. However, you could just purchase a second touch screen monitor.
Although I don't own one, I've done some searching in the past for a friend. The HP L2105tm hits a nice price point for a a 21.5" monitor - under $300. Most good quality touchscreen monitors are double or triple that amount.

How would you carry a 22-inch touch pad around? Already there's too many people whining about how "heavy" the 10-inch iPad is.
mymindgrapesAug 24, 2010
A touchscreen desktop?? That's so original! Gateway, Sony, Acer and HP should have done it first.
ilikedthecoreAug 24, 2010
Doing it first and doing it right are two different things.
Closed AccountAug 24, 2010
How do you know Apple will do it right?
maccawaccaAug 24, 2010
we don't... but we do know that Gateway, Sony, Acer and HP did it wrong
moloboloAug 24, 2010
The only thing the competitors have done wrong is the advertising.
maccawaccaAug 24, 2010
have you ever tried using the 'competitors' touch screen desktops?
Why is it so hard for people to understand that it's not the idea that counts. How well it's implemented is all that matters. Hence Jobs scrapping many iterations of the iPad over the past 10 years because it didn't meet his expectations.
macparrotAug 24, 2010
Gateway, Sony, Acer, and Dell all have monitors that drop down to make touch computing actually comfortable as shown in the article? Or did they just put a touch screen at an awkward angle making it nearly useless?
I have no idea how practical something like this would be, but next time why not actually READ the article (then you would have seen the pretty pictures) before you make what is clearly an uninformed comment?
rudegarAug 24, 2010
big greasy glass screen ftw!

Dear Microsoft, Dell, Acer, et. al.:
Suck it.

How well did those touchscreen PCs sell? How practical were they to use as intended? Now go look at the patent in the article.
I still think the Magic Trackpad (man that name still grates on my nerves) is a better solution for interacting with OS X. Just needs some kind of visual feedback so we don't have to look from the pad and back all the time to guesstimate where we are.
This kind of article just makes me believe that OS X's days as we currently know it are numbered.
designetAug 24, 2010
why the past-tense? My local supermarket is still selling s**tloads of them
i agree that it's not the wonder-feature that it's touted as, nor is it a good enough primary input mechanism (you still use keyboard and mouose most of the time) but it's a NICE feature to use occasionally and it's only usually an extra £100-£200 ( around $50-$100) for a multitouch-monitor-based PC
something tells me that the new iMac will be at LEAST £500 more than the standard model, but "it'll change everything"
The Trackpad looks nice...people have often thought about why this sort of thing isn't available, but i just couldn't use it instead of a mouse and therefore would probably never use it at all.
therednewtAug 24, 2010
When I saw this, my first thought was "Why the hell didn't HP do this already?" Yeah, they're already making touch screen desktops, but this just makes so much sense.
designetAug 24, 2010
don't see how
it's going to be far to big and heavy to carry and use as a tablet...(or far too small and underpowered to be used as a desktop) ... so all you're going to get is something deskbound that automatically reduces it's own functionality when in tablet-mode

A 22" iPad would be rather unwieldy to carry around, I think.

my grandpa wasn't so impressed .... he complained that the pron is broken
ilikedthecoreAug 24, 2010
Gateway, Sony, Acer and HP and Dell would all stick a touchscreen onto a desktop computer and call it done. Apple at least appears to be thinking about how a real person would use such a device and there is the difference.
zenmojoAug 24, 2010
1. They already have. HP has had a 1500 dollar high end prebuilt desktop for years. HP Touch I believe it's called. Constantly upgraded.
2. A 22'' desktop is exactly what it is. A desktop. Anyone who thinks this thing is functionally different must be very confused.
Apple has made a business model out of making slimmer, less practical versions of stuff everyone already has and then hoping nobody has heard of the others. And usually they're right. They have very good marketing.
lebeagleAug 24, 2010
It will come with iWindex and an optional windscreen wiper.
jshhmrAug 24, 2010
It's the same Windex bottle, but it costs $40.
thahmzAug 24, 2010
Apple-odo... sure is Apple there...
thahmzAug 24, 2010
I laughed. You are a typical "macfag". You think someone hasn't done it before? You that stupid? Someone did face time before you too, and you dare to call it "revolutionary new way of connecting"Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You directly rip off the HP TouchSmart PC?
brandwagonAug 24, 2010
Makes more sense for the keyboard to be touch screen.
