I'd tell you how I typically pronounce it, but I can't in polite company.

A as in "A dog"
Sus as in "I sussed that out easily"
kustomkidDec 18, 2010
After pronouncing it incorrectly all these years, Asus was nice enough to change the pronunciation for me. Thanks!
meccaydnaDec 18, 2010
It always seemed like they were trying to force people to pronounce it soose just to be different. But anyone that heard about the pegasus thing would of course pronounce it the CORRECT WAY.
breakspiritDec 18, 2010
I'm going to go ahead and say that I love the woman they got to say the name.
madronaDec 18, 2010
Now if we can learn the definitive pronunciation of SUSE Linux. soo suh. soo say. Sousa. Zeus.
mrzaikoDec 18, 2010
Always called it "sussie"
xyzzymagicatDec 21, 2010
I looked it up a few weeks ago while wondering why the "u" is usually lowercase... It's a German acronym**, pronounced in the UK to rhyme with how they say "user" -- so it's kind of like "soo-sah" but not quite, I guess.
**Software und System Entwicklung = Software and Systems Development, possibly the dullest distro name ever. (Ironic given their mascot/color had me half-expecting the acronym would stand for for something like Neon Green Lovers United or something.)

So, the chairman of ASUS says the name wrong? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6CdM4FCzLc
vargvikernesDec 19, 2010
Yeah, the video is bulls**t. It's not called Ey-sus at all.
Here another (more exciting video) proving us right: http://hothardware.com/News/Asus-Video-Contest-Entry-Makes-For-Compelling-Promo-Spot/

how do you pronounce SAP? seems a lot think they're messing with tree sap.
TomHanks4Dec 19, 2010
use this type of thing as a handy, instant indicator of ignorance. for instance, when i hear a new dba ask for the login to the "es queue el" server, I immediately know not to give them credentials for the production environment.
seth024Dec 20, 2010
But it says so on wikipedia:
officially pronounced /ˌɛskjuːˈɛl/ like "S-Q-L"
TomHanks4Dec 20, 2010
well, i usually have a good deal of respect for wikipedia, but after 30 years "in the biz" i'd have to disagree with that one. SQL is pronounced sequel as a sort of pun, because it was created as a replacement for or sequel to Query Language (QL). perhaps in time the joke was lost and it's become more acceptable to call it S-Q-L, but way back in the day it certainly wasn't. In my own experience, those who call it S-Q-L are usually inept in much more important ways.
seth024Dec 23, 2010
might be because every one who says 'sequel' has been using SQL since the start while all the new unexperienced college students are learning 'S-Q-L'.
caringdove4uDec 19, 2010
A-su-us
agent22045Dec 19, 2010
I didn't know there ever was a problem with people pronouncing it incorrectly? Everyone I know pronounces it the correct way.
