The lessons here appear to be:
1. If you are building a native app, go iPhone
2. If you are building a web app, go WebKit (ideally using progressive enhancement)
robbh66Sep 29, 2010
AFAIK, mobile safari, android, and now even Blackberry all use webkit.
seinmanSep 30, 2010
So does Palm's WebOS. The mobile world has basically standardized on Webkit.

another year or two and android phones will outnumber iPhones...
with apple, you get one product(with differences in storage) and can currently only use one carrier(unless you buy it unlocked or unlock it youurself and cancel the at&t plan and pay the cancellation fee)
with android, you get a bunch of different phones to pick from on a bunch of different carriers
stealthspcSep 29, 2010
That's really hard to predict. The cell phone market is extremely competitive and unstable at this point. In two years, anything could happen.
TomHanks4Sep 29, 2010
the iPhone is the perfect size, perfect shape and comes with the perfect options and perfect carrier (with perfect rate plans) for all humans on the planet. having your choice of different features and forms will only lead to misery.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ford_prefect2ndSep 30, 2010
/s? I know it seems obvious, I could see this said legitimately.
johnnydiggmeSep 29, 2010
That may or may not be true, but even if it happens, does Apple really care if the total number of Android devices out number those of the iOS?
Apple directly benefits from each iOS device sold, whereas Android devices are split among a number of different phone manufactures.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bbtwebSep 30, 2010
well yes, I would hope so - I mean not to point out the obvious or anything but iPhone is the iPhone. Android is an OS that is available on MANY cell phones. So no surprise at all. But, if you talk to iPhone owners and IT support folks, they will tell you that iPhone owners are loyal to the phone, and most complain about the carrier. Also, in terms of usability for the average user, the iOS interface is still smoother and supportive of more enterprise networks/systems than Android at this point.
l800lemmingsSep 30, 2010
as an iphone user i agree, apple has backed themselves into a corner with exclusivity contracts. & while i love my iphone i have love for android as well as it stimulates competition between the other tribes
mgill3Sep 30, 2010
So wait... you're saying that several different devices made by several different companies will OUTNUMBER only ONE device made by ONE company!?!?!? ....
Thats incredible!
mgill3Sep 30, 2010
Wow I just realized your comment is number one on this entire article at only 14 diggs, and I am the only person to even make a comment about it...
everybody left... damn. That explains all these s**tty comments.
duleewopperSep 30, 2010
finally some perspective! *high five*
Closed AccountSep 30, 2010
yes... im saying one operating system will outnumber another operating system...
i used the name iPhone because you cant get that OS on any other phone, if the android OS was on just one phone than i would have said the phone by name
i didnt think i would have to dumb it down so much
synideSep 30, 2010
It's not like I can go get the best droid, or the one I want on any carrier, they are all just as exclusive as the iPhone, many of them on ATT

If you are an iPhone app developer, you can make handsome money out of it because of huge iPhone users tendency toward iPhone apps. .
arschgaudiSep 29, 2010
Brilliant insight, I would have never made the correlation between iPhone users and iPhone app usage.
reaper527Sep 30, 2010
i think his point was that android users don't buy android apps. ios users (as illustrated in the infographic), however, do buy apps from the app store
devophlSep 29, 2010
Problem today is that if you write an app for the iPhone, you are one of 10 million. Unless you come up with the next great app, you're probably not going to make any money off of it.
lelio98Sep 29, 2010
What they fail to mention is Apple's share of the market's profits, which far surpasses the other manufacturers of smartphones.
TomHanks4Sep 29, 2010
why is the amount of money Apple is taking from it's fans meaningful here?
johnnydiggmeSep 29, 2010
Meh, I like the iphone, I've had the original, the 3G, and now the iPhone 4.
It's a personal preference, and I could care less if the number of Android devices one day surpasses that of the iPhone.
ford_prefect2ndSep 30, 2010
How much less could you care?
tom53086Sep 30, 2010
he could care 3 times less. I'm sure.
no wait 4 times.
tom53086Sep 29, 2010
so... compare iphone to smartphone users in the US, but then compare iphone to all cell phones for the global market.... ???
By the figures in the first part of the chart it would appear that 5.81% of americans use iphones. Not too far off from the 2%.....
But I don't understand what this is meant to prove. iphones cost more than almost all cell phones and companies like nokia have been doing this for like 5 times as long as apple....
ford_prefect2ndSep 30, 2010
And Apple has been doing it twice as long as google. ;)
tom53086Sep 30, 2010
true, but when you compare 3 years to 1.5 years there isn't as much difference as 3 years to 20 years....
Plus, google has only made one phone. It's easy to make an OS and give it to everyone for free. Android is probably on over 100 phones versus the 4 iphones...
bbtwebSep 30, 2010
I wish Google would release another phone. Based on the mobile devices I support daily at my company, the Nexus One still runs circles around the version of Android running on the Droids - I'm convinced Verizon adds garbage to the OS. So I'm hoping for a Nexus Two
hufflepuff17Sep 30, 2010
I'm this doesn't bother Apple or Steve Jobs one bit, like in the computer market, they could careless about being on top in terms of market share and selling the most.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
phlamingtoadSep 30, 2010
First of all, Apple pisses me off, and I lub me some Android.
However, why the hell would they compare phone sales for Oct-Dec of 2009? This was the point where Android had been out about 4-5 months, gaining steam, and Apple hadn't done anything noteworthy in a while. Everyone knew Apple was going to have to counter with a better phone, so there was no reason to buy the iPhone until that point came...
tom53086Sep 30, 2010
the G1 had been out for a year during that timeframe. But still I agree android was gaining momentum while the iphone sales were in the mid-cycle slump
badmephistoSep 30, 2010
When I think of people without a smart phone these days I think of my grandma
skurtSep 30, 2010
Put me in that -12% 3 weeks ago my company got me the new iphone 4 32GB... It is like night and day. WinMo WinBlows I had a Samsung Omina 910 and even with me cooking new ROMS and using Sbp you just couldn't polish that turd.
The iPhone is easier to use, more precise, handier etc., etc. And the one thing I've noticed about advertising/marketing is that Android/Carriers advertise the Android, and Company/Users advertise the iPhone. What does that mean? When I see an Android commercial, it is 95% from either the Carrier (Sprint, Verizon) or Manufacture (Motorola, HTC)
but when I see an advertisement for the iPhone, it is from someone who tossses the cliche' There's an app for that - The Bank that lets you take a pic of the front and back of your check and it deposits it. The museums that tell you that you can use your iphone to do a tour of the place. Apple doesn't tell you to buy the iphone, they introduce it and everyone else sells it for them. Android introduces the Incredible and Verizon advertises all over to come buy it from them.
Of course the Android Incredible is a fantastic phone as well and it wouldn've been a very hard choice, but for now I love the iphone and all the great things I can do with it. Ping, VNC, iCall, Skype, RunKeeper, barcode scanning, guitar apps et. el.
I know the Android can do many of the same things, but my company didn't buy me an Android ;)
Blah blah blah... I know but this iphone is also *fun*
skurtSep 30, 2010
oh, and before everyone chimes in about jailbreaking and locked carriers, remember the newest Androids are coming locked and you still need to root them if you want to play, and now Motorola's new root-chip makes it brick if you try to play with their phone.
reefsurfer226Sep 30, 2010
well im not going to read the previous comments and just say that blackberry has been out for a while.. makes business phones (basically)... android is an operating system for smartphones and has no one maker (of the hardware) so duh its got a big smartphone marketshare
iphone is made and designed by one company (more or less) and is the best (feature wise, use out of the box, and app marketplace).
gsydiggerSep 30, 2010
buried for being 3 quarters out of date
themanichoSep 30, 2010
I think it's very stupid to say iPhone vs. Android. You can't compare a PRODUCT with an OS. Android has plenty of phones to choose from, and even if the OS is nice, the phones could actually suck. iPhone has no competition since the product itself can't be compared to anything that exists on the market.
I love the iPhone, I love Android OS, but comparing both of them is just plain stupid.
bluekarasuSep 30, 2010
And you can install Android on an iPhone \o/
ab5trakSep 30, 2010
So this data is from the sales of Oct-Dec 09.. dude thats only 1 quater and from LAST year.
Buried for old data.. oh wait Digg v4... >.<
supersayanyodaSep 30, 2010
which phone is running on linux?
reaper527Sep 30, 2010
openmoko did. as far as current phones though, no idea
jpyumulSep 30, 2010
Why is iphone only popular in US?
johnomazzSep 30, 2010
IMO, its popular because it was the first phone with an app store so there are tons of apps and tons of people buying apps. Its easier to make a money on the appstore then it is elsewhere. The iPhone was around for longer before Android came into view and has a large customer base. When compared to Win Mobile devices as well as BlackBerry and Palm, the iPhone far excelled. Lots of people bought iPhones and still have them. I had an iPhone for three years and am no more than happy with my DroidX. iPhone was the first, but IMO, Android is surpassing it now.
skyebekaSep 30, 2010
Popular enough to write yet another article about it.
wassamattaSep 30, 2010
ummm isn't Android using a linux kernel? Why do we have an Android and Linux category? Linux should be up 11% and have a 13% market share.
bluekarasuSep 30, 2010
ok... but Android IS linux based...
uennafinds01Oct 2, 2010
This whole info-graphic is a mess of data at random to make there findings look how ever they want this is not a very good info-graphic just. scroll to the bottom World mobile phone market share. It first isolates the iPhone in the 25% of US smart phones then to make it appear more drastic at the end they cut it out and just use all types of phones by brand. don't digg this and support misleading information like this.
