DPI(deep packet inspection/insertion) can be abused to alter any web traffic on the fly.
Now ask your North American Internet provider on just exactly what they are collecting via DPI. Especially if you are using MediaCom as an ISP(DNS hacking, DPI ad insertions). http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Mediacom-DNS-Ad-Opt-Out-System-Still-Doesnt-Work-113368
Then again, anyone can set up a server box with open WiFi and "play" with people trying to 'borrow' that WiFi to surf the web. Every site the WiFi user tries to go to could instead be a cat page or upside down or backwards writing.

Even when it was Iran i thought it was China, or the bears, someone increase the bear tax so we can fight these evil marauders.

Man-in-the-Middle attacks.

I think its safe to say our governments will be monitoring suspicious mail.

The world needs open and free communications and a feeling of being safe in doing so. Deep packet inspection and this man in the middle thing shouldn't be used to interfere with free speech and the natural rejection of corporate expansion of power.. This is important because I see the internet and the ability to communicate with new technology as being capable of supporting adequate response to the threat of global overheat and specie extinctions. The natural systems of the Earth are in danger of collapse but just in the nick of time coming to the rescue or at least potentially enabling each and every one of the billions of people on the planet to tell of a great idea or something else that can help. It's a timing of events happening in conjunction with an extinction event registering 10 out of 10 on the scale of world history and perhaps that of the Universe. It won't happen again and it's not simply one country who's policy stands in opposition to rapid and necessary response. Coal is in a feeding frenzy to be consigned to industry eager to make a profit and lock in a financial gain. It's happening all over the world. At the same time across N Africa and the Arab countries and beyond people are saying "I want my country back" just like some of tried to do here in the US when we elected our President. MY estimation is that the wrong people are in government and business models are needing to be changed if the World is to survive. Key to that is open and free opportunity at communications the internet provides.. In this game there is no net, nothing below to catch a slip. Why would a internet transmission need inspection under such condition of the World today. If we fail we fail big time and the life of the planet - we can not fail.. It's not possible. The timing of events in the world would not be possible if it were so.. We have an way forward if we use the tools and resources to protect God's good Earth and the life in the Sea.. The only net needed is to work together and try to do no harm knowing the future holds promise if we who live today can find a way

Haven't you heard of this novel invention? It is called 'paragraphs'.
Look it up, it is quite exciting!

And while everyone gets pissed off at this, try to remember that here in the US our ISPs are doing THE EXACT SAME THING.

CHINA HAS NO RIGHTS
BUT WE DO.
our government monitors us, they just give us the illusion that we still have freedoms all the time slowly eroding them for profit. and when they are all gone, hey at least we're not like china.

Yet another reason to use a VPN service that is trustworthy, assuming there is one. Even governments can't crack decent encryption.
