In reality, Google shouldn't really care. The money they make off of the Marketplace is minimal compared to what they can make if they get more market share.
kellyJan 9, 2011
Why is android market represented as the one to beat when they're a distant second to Apple's app store?
amaoicanJan 9, 2011
1. Apple does not allow alternate app stores on the iPhone - so there's no way for another company to compete in the iPhone app market.
2. Apple has 0% market share in the Android app market - so there's no way for another company to compete with Apple in the Android app market.
The point of this article is, can Amazon compel users to switch from Google's Market.

having multiple Appstores on Android is Win for us..
Nvidia will soon Launch the TegraZone app store.. where you can download/buy/watch trailers of the games for Tegra 2 dual-core phones.
f**king awesome
kellyJan 9, 2011
How is it a win? Are you under the impression that you get more apps this way? That's simply not the case. Instead, you just get more inconsistency... more in fact than there already is.
lopatamdJan 9, 2011
ROFL are you serious?
having more appstores means you dont have to follow the rules of official store..
example - TegraZone wont have the 50MB limit size for the games etc...
think a little
nexikJan 9, 2011
Each store will have its own rules = inconsistency.
kellyJan 9, 2011
You still have to observe the rules of a store. Now you just have a bunch of inconsistent rules. Again, how is this better?
lopatamdJan 9, 2011
multiple choises.
what inconsistent rules are you trolling about? d'oh -_-
everything is ok with the appstores..
kellyJan 9, 2011
>"what inconsistent rules are you trolling about?"
You said, "[the other stores] dont have to follow the rules of official store." which demonstrates that the rules are indeed different which by definition makes them inconsistent.
>"everything is ok with the appstores."
You mean aside from their inconsistency?
lilrabbit129Jan 10, 2011
Multiple choices just means fragmentation. While there may be a small percentage of programs that are "allowed" in one store and not in another, the majority will be the same apps.
Its just now when a user tries to buy an app, they have to figure out which store the phone is directing them to.
kj4wozJan 9, 2011
what you call "inconsistency" many of us see as variety. despite what Apple wants you to believe, human beings are generally intelligent enough to make choices for themselves. being locked down and restricted provides some safety, but at too great a cost.
kellyJan 9, 2011
"many of us see as variety."
You're saying that people like to go to multiple stores to get what they want rather than a single store where they can get it all?
kj4wozJan 9, 2011
If one store did "have it all", maybe not. However, when the content in one store is limited by it's controlling entity, it's nice to be able to go to another where you can find stuff not allowed in the first.
myztryJan 9, 2011
Who really cares if they are different markets for different devices. Each will have it strengths and will both suit different categories of users.
This whole concept of things tending towards unification is bulls**t. It primarily benefits the the developers & publishers. The 80's were so much more exciting because there was so much choice which in turn led to massive innovation.
I hope they both do well but I also hope neither gets a majority. I also hope others come along to dethrone then both at a suitable time, and in turn the same gets done for them. A dynamic market is a healthy one.
lilrabbit129Jan 10, 2011
Thats assuming that each store focuses on a specific demographic and all are equal in quality. What I envision happening is basically the same apps in every store, but just in differing states of update/branding.
If your vision comes out then that'd be great.

Google eBookstore vs Amazon. Now Amazon's Android Market vs Google's Android Market.
alanskyJan 9, 2011
You''ve got this backwards, dude. The question is: How can Android Market compete with the Apple App Store. Some people just don't like Apple, but that's their problem!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You didn't read the article, did you?
philbertJan 9, 2011
One thing that I do like about the Market is that it provides a very easy single place to go for updating and uninstalling apps. Something you don't get with sites like GetJar. If they can do that it would be a big step in making me like them.

I fail to understand how this benefits the USER. I'm sure most developers will submit their app to both stores but not all of them will...so there will probably be exclusives on each side. Your average user is not going to want to check every app store, providing more of them do pop up, to find the app they are looking for. Are there even any restrictions on the current android market other than a filesize limit? It's not like trying to circumvent Apple's app store and their ridiculous/lengthy screening process which I would completely understand...

I think I'm what you call a "APPLE" guy. I have a macbook for home, a mac for work, an iPad for the road, but I can't stand the iPhone, so I have an Android. One of the reasons I don't have the iPhone is not because I don't like it, but because I don't agree with Apple blocking content from the Apple store. When I wanted to use Google voice, Apple blocked it. I know, save your time, I know there's porn on Android, there's also porn on iPhone (on your browser, a 2 year old can access porn if they want to lol). I think the app store should be "more" open, not totally open, but more than it is right now. I DO agree that having no restrictions on the market is not good either :) Just my opinion.
