They should never have removed OtherOS, it pissed off even the most hardcore PS3 Fanboys and more importantly the guys who could enable piracy on their system.
The killer here is that now instead of Sony working on feature updates, they have to dedicate their work force to releasing security updates. Rather than playing cat and mouse for the next 6 years, they would be better off fixing this issue while at the same time making Linux available on the PS3. Hell, it's probably too late for that.

somebody's getting fired!

Now the PS3 will really be able to do everything just like they advertise. Good deal.

They can't even play cat and mouse, the entire security structure is broken. Since the private keys are now known hackers can just sign their own programs. The only way Sony can fix this is with a hardware revision.
alricscaDec 30, 2010
That will not help them unless they want to disable all old Sony ps3 games to date because the ps3 has to accept that the key used to sign their older games' executables are still valid and they cannot change the private key on their new games without killing the older boxes ability to play them. If they were to force an update to the old boxes to use a new key it would expose that key to hacking and even then this new key would never be as secure as the old one because it would need to load from the software and not hardware level of the system.

the guy who steps in to talk about the broader console picture makes a very important point that ALL device makers should listen to, if they're phones, set-top boxes, routers, whatever:
Linux is an inevitablity, linux is the impetus for system cracking, and the side effect is piracy.
you don't even need to strictly "support" linux, just permit it, and save yourself the headache.

Any opinions on how this security blunder compares to the cracking of DVD signatures about 5 or 6 years ago? (longer?) I'm curious.
coded1Dec 31, 2010
The way Sony implemented their RSA signing function has 2 problems one being they didn't actually use a random number for the seed to access the hyper visor. The other is once you present a valid certificate to the hyper visor it will never check your cert again so you can get it grant you access to everything and you can then pass it off to anything you want. What they are now doing is making a replacement OS (AbestOS) that will run the games instead of Sony's OS making all subsequent changes by Sony moot. So now soon you should be able to do an "update" of the OS to AbestOS(which is linux) and it will run everything and anything for you.

so now we can finally get it to play ps2 games too.
neotechniDec 30, 2010
probably not
xerox2k2Jan 3, 2011
the ps3 fat models essentially had an entire ps2 inside, the ps3 slim cut all the ps2 circuitry out
so a software update won't bring back what you don't have...
grundmasterDec 30, 2010
All that is done by man can be broken by it...

time to trade in the xbox!
nstern2Dec 30, 2010
Does this mean full gpu and cpu support to homebrew? I would sure love to get another XBMC or Boxee box with the added benefit of being able to play ps3 games.

Once everything is unlocked I will pull my ps3 out of the closet and hook it up again. I had lost interest in it a while ago and put it away. I would love to have OtherOS and PS2 games playable. Hrmm I wonder if this would open the door to run Dolphin through linux on the PS3.
