That was fast...

That's what she said...
alienkidNov 8, 2010
I wish I could digg that 3 times lol
norman619Nov 8, 2010
No not really. It's pretty normal when you put up a monetary reward for the task.
schwartzloenardNov 7, 2010
har har har
cqlivingstonNov 7, 2010
It was only a matter of time.
luv2luvNov 7, 2010
Not surprised at all...
maxvetteNov 8, 2010
By "Break" they mean they created an open source driver so it can be hooked up to a PC. not like theyre jacking passwords or something.
joshmartins101Nov 8, 2010
fine clarification but these guys are gud
jqp123Nov 8, 2010
How "gud" do you have to be to tap into an unencrypted video feed?
enantiodromiaNov 8, 2010
It's good enough to impress the armchair IT wannabes.
Closed AccountNov 8, 2010
His last hack wasn't open source and is tied to a commercial company.
basvdNov 10, 2010
The driver is obviously not complete. So by "break" they probably mean that a solution to work around the security has been found but the device isn't yet fully controllable. I'm sure the $2,000 dollar hasn't been claimed yet.
jemm12Nov 8, 2010
If developers keep on developing new system hackers keep on researching for any loopholes of the said system... how sad.... not surprise...
ijs209Nov 8, 2010
This is why i love the Hacker community. :)
trakenNov 8, 2010
If this gets completed, it's going on my schools robot.
randomstyuffNov 9, 2010
FRC?
If yes, it would be kinda problematic for you to use as a drivers interface. I mean, I don't know how much space you guys have at your regionals, but but the one I go to certainly doesn't have room for moving around...
If you mean putting it on the actual robot for image processing, well, the drivers are for Windows, so you'd need a laptop or something because the cRio won't work...
MarcKNov 8, 2010
Get a MAC!
amyvernonNov 8, 2010
Oh, come on. I'm a Mac fan myself, but a dedicated hacker can hack anything. They routinely hack Macs when there's a reason. There just usually isn't.
MarcKNov 8, 2010
:) Sorry generic reply to anything Windows. I lost a heap of hair when using Vista and still cannot get over it.
hipmanNov 8, 2010
That's your problem.
enantiodromiaNov 8, 2010
I have yet to meet one Mac user who types it out as "MAC".
hardeep1singhNov 8, 2010
We're taking 'Games' here so your point is irrelevant,
heyjeanNov 8, 2010
that would be pessimistic!
phoufrosNov 8, 2010
or did they?
i am willing to bet MS did it for promotional reasons - untill the next update :)
imnotadiggNov 8, 2010
This is a glimpse into the future of Windows
glassagateNov 8, 2010
So, what goofy dance needs to be done to override the
security?
davidtcNov 8, 2010
Well there was mention of naked dancing, although I'm not sure of the proper motions you need to swing and bounce things. Might be ↑, ↑, ↓, ↓, ←, →, ←, →, B, A

someone made a pun on my name lol it only took 5 years
glassagateNov 8, 2010
@ davidtc
Okay, so that sounds like how a guy would
do it. Now, how would a woman do it?
phantomjmNov 8, 2010
A woman may not have a joystick but she does have a mouse nub. ;)
norman619Nov 8, 2010
What "security?"
socketassaultNov 8, 2010
No, they put a code on the bottom of the avatar's feet. If you can get your pose right, you can get the code and unlock it.
ivanroseNov 8, 2010
M$ supports the regular "xbox 360 gamepads" for PC, So I would think they owe it for the kinect as well.
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=gaming
The only one thing M$ can do is just create the drivers from their side and upload them to the M$ website.
If I can control the Windows Media Center, with the Kinect I would buy it, right away.. this will give M$ marketing even more profits!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
norman619Nov 8, 2010
Love that entitlement mindset you have going on there.
hipmanNov 8, 2010
Shut the f**k up, ivanro$e.
ivanroseNov 8, 2010
Hmm., I wonder if the digg engineering team, would do something about people that drops F* bombs...
btw thanks! for bring the traffic back to digg!
sabazouNov 8, 2010
You can enable the profanity filter here if you like - http://digg.com/settings/preferences
darkshroudNov 8, 2010
Are you five or something? Who the hell types M$ and means it.
ivanroseNov 8, 2010
That would be me!, I'm just trying to get someone @ M$ to look at my comments so they make some Legit drivers... and you discussing it it's just part of the plan!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ultramagnus0001Nov 8, 2010
I would like to use it for windows too
kalvinbNov 8, 2010
If the protections were overly complex it would be more expensive to produce since it would require faster processing to do whatever it is it does and encrypt / decrypt data.
Companies really need to get over themselves and their input devices. The more open it is the more likely it will be used by hobbyists. It's unlikely I'll shell out the money for an XBox but if their fancy motion sensing stuff can be used on a PC then I may buy that to fiddle with.
I put together a fun little PC Elmo game for my daughter using the Wiimote and XNA.
jqp123Nov 8, 2010
"If the protections were overly complex it would be more expensive to produce since it would require faster processing to do whatever it is it does and encrypt / decrypt data."
The data is probably not encrypted at all.
The real protection on the Kinect is a patent which covers how the sensors and video work together.
hipmanNov 8, 2010
yeah that'll stop'em...lol...
jqp123Nov 8, 2010
Probably not ... but it can get them sued and ruin their life ... if they had one ... lol...
omouseNov 8, 2010
That just shows how much patents are bulls**t. Increasing complexity in order to "protect" something that's imaginary is hella stupid. Software = math. You shouldn't be allowed to patent it at all.
jqp123Nov 8, 2010
If you're going to rant about patents please make an effort to learn more about them.
As far as I have seen, the patent application for the Kinect does *not* contain any software ... because software in and of itself is not patentable. What is patentable is a unique method or process ... which may or may not involve software.
The method/process in this case is a rather unique way to interact with a computer. *Any* implementation of this process could be considered a violation of the patent.
norman619Nov 8, 2010
This title is VERY misleading and I don't see why people are amazed that after being offered a reward of $1000 that some one quickly did it.
hardeep1singhNov 8, 2010
$2000. read the article.
ultramagnus0001Nov 8, 2010
$1000 at first $2000 after Microsoft got pissed
eyecomeanonNov 8, 2010
I don't know if anyone caught it, but the bit at the end about a guy dancing naked and having photos shot made me laugh. Can you imagine the privacy sensibility of Facebook paired with the photocapturing capabilities of Kinect? How long until that bitch starts turning itself on at MS's request and snapping photos of you doing s**t you shouldn't be, then sharing it with everyone?
And on an only slightly more legitimate note: Imagine the uses of this for Kinexting. That's right, I dubbed it, Sex-Kinecting. It's Kinexting. It's GOING to happen. I mean, it can measure distance even. I bet dudes would love being able to see how big the t**s of the chick on screen are, or know how big their dick is. It'll happen, just wait.
pyrokarmaNov 8, 2010
I love how Microsoft is pretending that sending a press-release will convince hackers not to try. Telling anyone they can't only makes them try harder.
hipmanNov 8, 2010
Well then don't cry when they come after you.
pyrokarmaNov 8, 2010
For what?
thatebayerNov 8, 2010
being gay
jqp123Nov 8, 2010
I love how you pretend that all they are doing is sending a press release.
The real protection on the Kinect is a patent that covers how the sensors, video and software work together. Any driver which makes full use of the hardware to do what the Xbox does will undoubtedly violate this patent ... which means that the developer and/or anyone who makes use of it can be sued in court.

A Microsoft product hacked? Well I never!
s4239642Nov 8, 2010
haha
hardeep1singhNov 8, 2010
Every Microsoft product gets hacked right when its released. It gives them free publicity, people start thinking about the product positively (think cracked games for free) and later Microsoft patches it to give developers a feeling that their investments are protected. It gets hacked again sometime later and the game of cat and mouse continues.
rrouseNov 8, 2010
May some people from Google will make something really cool with it.
jqp123Nov 8, 2010
Yeah, like take pictures and send them to Google servers.
