The only similarity between the two is they have "TV" at the end of the name.

They have the company at the front.

The Apple TV is an attractive option due to it's cost. I'm not in the market for a new television, so getting a TV with GoogleTV built in isn't an option as of currently. As far as the independent boxes go, they're priced a little too high for my taste as of currently. But with that said, I feel that the GoogleTV is superior to the AppleTV.

Apple TV is going to take the cake on this one.

Both sides are going to do good just cause of their name.

They both suck!

I don't understand this comparison. Google TV and Apple TV are completely different products. One lets you watch live TV and is supposed to make searching for programs easier while bringing the internet to TV while the other just puts your iTunes store, Netflix and your personal media on the TV. At this point, the two products are not aiming to do the same thing.

apple tv is closed and you have to pay for all your content - all it really does is acts as a "streaming hub". Google tv actually tries to integrate the internet and video content on it into your tv. Obviously it's the better choice.

The Apple doesn't fall far from the TV... or does it?

love Google TV

Google TV + 3D + HD tuners + HDD recording + plasma = TV 2.0 heaven
Google TV is going to kill it with on-air and web aware apps and widgets.
ATV will stay a hobby for a while longer. Shoulda made it the dirt cheap iOS console when you had a chance Steve, now you're playing catchup again.

If you want something in between, take a look at the Roku boxes (http://http://www.roku.com/). The most expensive one is $100, and you get netflix, amazon, and a bunch of others. Also there are cheap apps you can buy that will play h264 video off of a network store. I'm in the process of riping my dvd collection so I can play it all like this.
