techland.time.com — Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt predicted that rapid advances in technology will soon transform science fiction into reality - meaning people will have driverless cars, small robots at their command and the ability to experience being in another place without leaving home.

Can't wait for the driverless car! I was a big Knight Rider fan!
CaptainMiseryFeb 29, 2012
No more DUIs or high cab fares...
meribianFeb 29, 2012
And you get in the car and you've been charged with some stupid bulls**t and it drives you to the police station..
shravarchMar 1, 2012
Refer to "Personalized transportation system", MASDAR. It got executed and working great.
meribianFeb 29, 2012
This is obvious. There is no science fiction....only science future.

driverless car for public release.. a good ideal innovation !
intrepiddesignMar 1, 2012
Will most assuredly be exclusively for the well to do at first, then eventually common place.
arsitioMar 1, 2012
I want all of this. Especially self driving cars, and ubiquitous internet.
bestenemyMar 1, 2012
Driverless cars are already a reality... thanks to the growing number of jobless Americans.

Thanks Debbie Downer

I'll all for advancements, but let's follow advancement to it's ultimate conclusion shall we? Take the driverless cars for example, sounds great right? I want one, you want one. What about truck drivers? Cab and limo drivers? Now they are out of a job. More casualties of progress I suppose. Now if you think your profession is safe from automation, you're delusional. They have programs writing news articles now. I'm an Art Director, do I see a program that could one day make better design decisions, maybe? So eventually if we have a program or a robot doing everything from serving our food to walking our dogs to creating our entertainment to running our companies to waging our wars, what will humans do for jobs? Seriously. Will we even need jobs? Eventually we're going to have to answer that question, maybe not in our lifetimes, but soon enough. What will we do with our time when there are no jobs left that cant be done by a zero wage robots (and don't say fixing the robots, robots will do that). Will we have to shed our old ways of thinking about EVERYTHING when no one can earn an income?
arsitioMar 2, 2012
Hear hear!! And I for one support robots taking away all of our jobs!

It seems that the day is not so far when one have a car to drive to the moon
improvisedMar 1, 2012
Though I really hope the day will come when my car will have its own car that will drive it to the moon.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there won't be any real driverless cars in public roads any time soon, if ever. There is a huge problem with liability. Somebody will have to be liable for malfunctioning of the vehicle and potential errors and accidents, either the driver or manufacturer. Why would manufacturers ever never sell cars that remove the responsibility from the driver? It means they're directly responsible for all accidents. At the same time, nobody would want an "autonomous car" that requires them to be paying attention at all times. It defeats the purpose. I will surrender myself to an autonomous car when Eric Schmidt lets it drive him by itself on s**tty Michigan roads, in snowy winter, in high speed traffic, for an entire night, while he naps at the back seat with no supervision. Until that happens I can survive with simple autonomous stop and go traffic control, perhaps, or maybe lane-keep assist, while keeping my eyes wide open.

for the record, you are wrong. please, mark my words. you're wrong. less than 10 years, 25% of americans will be in driverless vehicles.
vlamisMar 4, 2012
Did you even read what I wrote? Doesn't it make sense to you?
neamerjellMar 1, 2012
I have a perfect solution for errors and malfunctions - DON'T RUN WINDOWS ON IT!
krazedkaozMar 1, 2012
hello skynet.
Zannys_BrainFeb 29, 2012
Like I said, reminds me of Wall-E. But who can resist? I will admit, I can't.
knm123Mar 1, 2012
Google would say that since they want to control everything... hey can Google make an app so I can flush my toilet with my droid phone? Now call me when we have flying cars, yeah baby....
rocannonFeb 29, 2012
just say no....
improvisedMar 1, 2012
Science fiction will be real when I finally have my goddamn flying car.
neamerjellMar 1, 2012
This is old technology. We've been able to make driverless cars for nearly 15 years. They must have found a way to make it practical and cost efficient. If this pipe dream becomes reality, I for one look forward to faster transit times and safer roads. Ain't nothin' worse than nearly getting run off the road by some woman on her cell phone or stuck behind some geezer going half the speed limit...
chillpill4yaMar 1, 2012
the future scares ...its all been done and weve seen the outcome. technology kicks our ass.
kiwiburnerMar 1, 2012
In less than 10 years, consumers will realize that 25% of chief executive-wannabe-peoples-heroes are only making such inane statements into headlines so that their consumers will identify with their brand image.

excellent

Kinda. Sorta. PErhaps the ETs have more to do with that then people are aware of......

Kurzweil virtual "assistants"!
revg33kFeb 29, 2012
everybody chant with me....
FLY-ING CARS! FLY-ING CARS! FLY-ING CARS!
neamerjellMar 1, 2012
Get real. Do you really want to give a pilot's license to the woman on her cell phone who can't even keep a small land based vehicle inside a 10 foot wide lane?
revg33kMar 1, 2012
natural selection at work :D
mrnaturalFeb 29, 2012
What about a pill that takes the place of a five course meal? Hey, I have a Roomba but that isn't my idea of a robot housekeeper. Where's my Cherry 2000? Do I even need to broach the subject of the flying car?
Technology is not about accelerating the future...It's all about making rich guys richer. At least the way we are doing it. iPad3 anyone?
breadfredMar 1, 2012
I do not know about you, but I like eating a meal - and dislike eating a pill. Flying cars are a misnomer. It sounds like a waste of energy to keep a cart up in the air while it can move just as well on the street.
And really, your last statement is pretty out there. Just look back 25 years. I had a zx spectrum and was working as a console operator on an AS400. PCs were unheard off; let alone the internet. Technology has enriched more nobody's than any other area in such a small amount of time.
